Analysts argue that external conflict often bolsters the establishment's narrative of national unity, stifling dissent. 'In times of external conflict, the (military) establishment rallies public support and tightens its control over dissent,' said Hasan Askari Rizvi, a Lahore-based political commentator.

Internal optimism of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party about his release seems increasingly delusional. While public statements from some party leaders forecast his imminent return, reports suggest that several have quietly forged ties with the military.
A senior PTI figure, requesting anonymity, bluntly described them as 'either naive or complicit' in managing expectations among the party's base.
Khan's refusal to cut a deal -- unlike Nawaz Sharif's 2019 exile or Zardari's well-known compromises -- has positioned him as a prisoner of principle, but also rendered him politically isolated.
International factors, once seen as a potential lifeline for Khan, have also faded. Ahead of the US presidential election in November 2024, some PTI supporters speculated that a Donald Trump victory could pressure Pakistan's leadership to release Khan, citing concerns over controversial February 2024 elections, human rights abuses, and mass incarceration of PTI workers.
However, recent developments have upended these expectations. Pakistan's military and civilian leadership have worked diligently to mend ties with Washington, exemplified by the arrest and extradition of Sharifullah, a high-value militant wanted by the US. Trump's public praise for Pakistan's cooperation signalled a thaw in relations, further solidified by lobbying efforts and backchannel diplomacy between Pakistani authorities and Trump's transition team.
The domestic legal landscape offers little respite. Khan faces over 150 cases, many of which legal experts describe as politically motivated. The postponement of the land scam hearing against Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in Islamabad high court last Wednesday underscores the judiciary's reluctance, or inability, to challenge the establishment's agenda. While PTI decries judicial bias, the government insists that Khan's cases are rooted in evidence of corruption and misuse of power.
'The law is taking its course,' said Information Minister Attaullah Tarar in a recent press conference, dismissing PTI's protests as 'political theatre'.
For Khan's supporters, the former cricket legend remains a symbol of resistance against a hybrid regime that blends military dominance with civilian acquiescence. Yet, the PTI's ability to sustain momentum is waning. The party's leadership is fractured, with many senior figures either in jail, in hiding, or abroad. The government's crackdown on PTI's social media networks and public gatherings has further curtailed its outreach.

Air India crash: The mortal remains of Gujarat's former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will be be handed over to his family and his last rites will be performed at 5 pm on Monday. According to news agency ANI, Rupani's mortal remains will be taken to Rajkot by air and reach there at 2 pm. The last rites will be performed at 5 pm with state honours. Vijay Rupani died in the Air India plane crash that happened on June 12 this year. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft crashed into a hostel complex shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, killing 241 passengers and crew. Rupani's identity was confirmed through DNA testing, hospital authorities were quoted by ANI as saying. According to officials, Rupani's mortal remains will be received from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital at 11:30 am and transported to Rajkot by air, where it is expected to arrive by 2 pm. The final rites are scheduled to be performed at 5 pm. Rupani will be cremated in Rajkot later Monday with full state honours. The Tricolour is being brought to the Civil Hospital mortuary in Ahmedabad to be draped over his mortal remains. Around 2,000 kilograms of flowers will be used to decorate the hearse van that will carry the body of the former Chief Minister. Rushabh Rupani, son of former CM late Vijay Rupani, told ANI, ' This is a sad time not just for our family but also for the other 270 families.' He thanked police, Aarogya staff, Civil Defence, Fire Services and RSS workers for their rescue efforts during this incident. "I also express gratitude to PM Modi, CM Bhupendra Patel and other leaders for supporting and standing with not just our family, but also all other families. My father touched many lives during the 50-55 years of his political life. Today, all those people are standing by us. Many party workers from Punjab are also coming here to express their condolences...," Rushabh said. Meanwhile, Nimit Mishra, son-in-law of former CM late Vijay Rupani, said, 'These are extremely tragic times not just for us but for each and every one who has lost a loved one. We are finding it extremely difficult to go through these days. We are expressing overwhelming grief and agony.' "I would like to thank all those who have extended their support to as a family, would like to mention that we are thinking of each person who has lost a loved one and we would like to share your pain and grief. I would like to thank the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the CM and state officials who have shared our pain...," he added.

KTR appears before ACB again in Formula-E Racing fund misuse case
Hyderabad, June 16 (UNI) Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K T Rama Rao (KTR) appeared before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Monday in connection with the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities related to the Formula-E car racing event. The hearing began at 1000 hours at the ACB office in Banjara Hills. KTR arrived at Telangana Bhavan by 0900 hours and later proceeded to the ACB office accompanied by his legal counsel, Ramachandra Rao. The ACB had issued a summons to him on June 13. This marks KTR's second appearance before the ACB in the case. He was previously questioned for nearly six and a half hours on January 9. The case pertains to the alleged misappropriation of government funds during the BRS regime to support the Formula-E race in Hyderabad. Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, KTR said, 'I have been summoned by the ACB to appear for investigation on Monday at 1000 hours in the Formula-E race case, where Rs 44 crore was transferred from bank to bank, and the money is very much in the account of FE. As a law-abiding citizen, I will attend and fully cooperate with the ACB officials.' According to the FIR filed by the ACB, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) allegedly transferred funds amounting to Rs 44 crore to London-based Formula E Operations (FEO) in violation of established procedures. The payment was reportedly made as the state's share for sponsoring the second edition of the Formula-E race in Hyderabad. While the first edition in early 2023 was sponsored by the private firm Ace Nxt Gen, the company is said to have declined to support the second edition. Subsequently, KTR, who was then Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD), allegedly directed senior officials to ensure that HMDA covered the costs. ACB officials claim that this was done without following due process. The ACB has already questioned several key individuals, including former MAUD Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar, and representatives from Ace Nxt Gen and FEO. Meanwhile, the BRS has strongly criticised the investigation, calling it politically motivated. Party leaders have demanded a fair and transparent probe, alleging that the case is being used as a tool for a political vendetta. Through a post on the social media platform X, KTR expressed strong displeasure against the Congress government. He stated that the ongoing enquiries, commissions, and what he described as political harassment by the Congress party would not deter them.
