Omani British Society hosts workshop on advancing sultanate's food security

Muscat Daily31-05-2025
Muscat – The Omani British Society hosted a workshop on Wednesday titled 'Harvesting Oman's Resilience: Advancing Food Security Through Innovation'. The event brought together a diverse group of experts from Oman and the UK – including government officials, agri-tech pioneers, policy strategists, and business leaders – to explore innovative solutions to the sultanate's food security challenges.
Saleh Zakwani, Chairman of the Omani British Society, stated that the workshop reflects the Omani British Society's commitment to facilitating dialogue on issues of strategic national importance. 'Food security is a key component of Oman's long-term vision, with a clear goal of increasing self-sufficiency and building a resilient, sustainable food system. By bringing together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders, we aim to support the national agenda through collaboration and knowledge exchange. We are proud to serve as a platform for these vital conversations that shape Oman's future.'
In addition to individual presentations, the workshop featured a dynamic panel discussion with five distinguished participants. The panel comprised Andrea Di Lello, Senior Director, Alvarez & Marsal; Eng Asma al Hinai, Manager of the Oman Vision 2040 Office at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources; Edward Gilbert, Regional Agriculture and Food Counsellor for the Gulf, British Embassy Riyadh; Sameer Ul Haque, Chief Investment Officer, Tawoos Group; and Shepard (Colie) Spink, Managing Director, Alvarez & Marsal.
The engaging panel discussion was moderated by Jesal Asher Rajda, Executive Director, Al Ansari Group. Panellists shared insights into the complex challenges facing Oman's food systems – from water scarcity to supply chain optimisation and investment in agri-tech.
Eng Asma al Hinai shared updates on the government's ongoing efforts and strategic initiatives to strengthen national food security, attract investment, and increase self-sufficiency in key food commodities.
She noted that, as part of its Vision 2040 objectives, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources adopted Food Security Labs as a core mechanism to implement its five-year plan. 'The outcome of the first phase, launched in 2021, has already resulted in over 340 investment projects across the agriculture, fisheries, and water resources sectors. We are currently preparing for the final session of the Food Security Lab in October this year to conclude the first phase.'
These Food Security Labs, she said, are aligned with the pillars of Oman Vision 2040. More than 40 enabling initiatives have also been launched to support long-term sustainability and investor confidence in the agriculture sector.
Eng Asma also highlighted the ministry's support for entrepreneurs and investors through a range of incentive packages. She emphasised Oman's strategic focus on increasing production of food commodities where self-sufficiency is currently below 75%. 'We have established a National Food Basket that includes 25 commodities across eight food crop categories. These strategic crops are the focus of a national plan to raise sufficiency levels to at least 75% by 2028.'
'To guide these efforts, we developed a comprehensive investment map, which analyses crop composition, soil texture, and groundwater availability across Oman's governorates. This will help optimise agricultural production based on regional strengths.'
Looking beyond primary production, Eng Asma said that the ministry is also working to enhance value-added processing capabilities for various food commodities. Success stories include Oman's growing industries in date processing, fish canning, and dairy by-products – many of which have already surpassed 75% self-sufficiency due to domestic value addition.
Haifa al Khaifi, General Secretary of the Omani British Society, expressed deep appreciation for the insightful dialogue held during the workshop. She said, 'Under the esteemed leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Oman has charted a clear path towards sustainable agricultural development. Convening experts from both Oman and the UK – from government officials to agri-tech pioneers – demonstrated the power of collaboration, innovation, and strategic investment in bolstering national food security.'
She acknowledged the critical role of public–private partnerships, the water–energy–food nexus, and coordinated supply–demand planning, and extended gratitude to all speakers, partners, and attendees for their valuable contributions.

Omantel plans makeover into Oman's flagship national tech powerhouse

MUSCAT: Omantel, the majority state-owned integrated telecommunications provider in Oman, has unveiled plans for a major rebranding of its corporate identity with the goal of remaking itself as the country's premier technology powerhouse. The publicly traded telco, with a market capitalisation of just under $2 billion, currently offers services across fixed-line, mobile, Internet, ICT and data-centre solutions both domestically and regionally. Through strategic partnerships and joint ventures, the Group also has a substantial presence across the Middle East and North Africa, with connectivity extending worldwide via its investments in a raft of submarine cables. Announcing its imminent corporate makeover strategy, the company said: 'In the first half of 2025, the region's telecommunications sector experienced strong continued momentum in its shift towards smart solutions and emerging technologies, fuelled by growing demand for integrated connectivity solutions, cloud computing, and AI-driven services. Amid intensifying competition and a regional drive to diversify business models, Omantel Group continued to take bold strategic steps to reinforce its position as a leading player in this evolving landscape, both in Oman and across the region,' it stated in the Chairman's Report for H1 2025. The new entity will bring together Oman's ICT strengths under one umbrella, spearhead major digital initiatives, attract leading global partners, and position Oman as a vibrant regional hub for innovation and next-generation technologies,' it further added. According to Omantel, the journey to become a flagship national technology powerhouse is built on deep infrastructure, expanded digital services, strategic global alliances, and homegrown innovation capacity. Together, these strengths position Oman as a regional hub for AI, cloud, Industry 4.0, and smart city development — fully aligned with the ambitions of Oman Vision 2040. At the heart of this expansive infrastructure is the nationwide rollout of 5G and near-universal fibre-to-the-home coverage, which now serves as the backbone of Oman's digital economy. With next-generation innovations such as the region's first 50GPON trials, these networks are creating the capacity required for AI-driven platforms, Industry 4.0 applications, and the digital services that will define Oman's future economy. At the same time, with more than 20 subsea cable investments and landing stations strategically positioned in Barka and Muscat, Omantel is transforming Oman into a regional Internet and data transit hub. These facilities not only support government digitisation but also enable enterprises to adopt hybrid cloud, e-services, and advanced hosting — strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of the national economy. Moving beyond connectivity, Omantel says it is delivering managed services, IoT platforms, and AI-driven analytics in partnership with leading technology providers. Furthermore, through its enterprise Security Operations Center and government cybersecurity engagements, the company is embedding resilience into Oman's digital landscape. Additionally, Omantel is also piloting smart lighting, transport, and connected utility solutions with government partners including the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. These initiatives place the company at the core of Oman's urban transformation, embedding AI and IoT in public services to enhance quality of life and economic efficiency.

SMART FARMING TRANSFORMS OMAN

Oman's agricultural sector is undergoing a significant transformation through innovation and technology, in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is spearheading efforts to enhance food security and environmental sustainability by promoting smart farming, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and modern irrigation techniques. Smart resource management systems, vertical farming, precision agriculture and digital tools are being adopted to improve productivity, reduce waste and ensure sustainable food availability. The Ministry supports small-scale innovative projects through technical and financial assistance, while funding initiatives and awareness programmes are provided via the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund and digital platforms. Collaboration with universities, research centres and international organisations such as FAO and AOAD further strengthens these efforts. Emphasis is being placed on integrating technology in agriculture, including IoT-based smart farms, disease prediction and crop improvement. Legislation such as the Intellectual Property Protection Law encourages innovators to register advancements in agricultural technologies, biofertilisers and irrigation systems. Agricultural startups benefit from tax exemptions and customs duty waivers on modern technologies, while renewable energy integration and organic farming are promoted to support sustainable production. Recent research from Sultan Qaboos University highlights the potential of the Harmal plant (Peganum harmala) in combating crop diseases. Supervised by Buthaina bint Harith al Busaidyah and Dhia bint Ibrahim al Rashdiyah, the study found that Harmal extracts inhibit harmful fungi, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. The research team developed a practical solution derived from Harmal that demonstrates high efficacy against pathogenic fungi, offering an environmentally safe option for Omani farmers. Innovative companies are also contributing to sustainable farming solutions. Hawra bint Rashid al Omraniyah from the University of Al Sharqiyah showcased AZDARA, a company producing organic pesticides and fertilisers in biodegradable smart soil packs. These packs nourish the soil as they decompose and include natural products derived from animal shampoo, providing safe pest control while improving animal health. Omar bin Fathil al Daree from UTAS Ibri introduced the Smart Agriculture Cultivator (SAG 1), a sensor-equipped device that analyses soil conditions in real time, measuring moisture, pH, temperature and nutrient levels. The system alerts users to issues such as salinity or nutrient deficiencies and removes impurities like stones, weeds and plastics automatically, improving both efficiency and soil health. The Ministry stressed that investing in agricultural innovation is a strategic necessity to secure a food-safe future amidst global challenges like climate change, resource scarcity and population growth. By encouraging private-sector partnerships, promoting research and supporting startup initiatives, Oman is building a resilient and sustainable agricultural framework. Through projects like smart irrigation, organic farming and biotechnology research, Oman aims to transform its food system, promote environmental stewardship and strengthen the green economy. The combination of innovation, legislation and private-sector collaboration positions the Sultanate of Oman as a regional leader in sustainable agriculture and food security. — ONA
