Technology-based courses enter management studies in business schools
According to an official press release, the Indian Institute of Management-Tiruchi (IIM-T) has introduced Text Analytics, AI for Managers and Advanced Machine Learning, among others, in the new curriculum, that reflect the growing importance of data-driven decision-making in different sectors.
'To ensure accessibility for students from all backgrounds, we have introduced no-code AI platforms such as KNIME and Orange. These platforms allow students with limited coding experience to apply AI techniques to solve business problems. Furthermore, AI tools and applications are now integrated within core functional-area courses to ensure broad exposure across marketing, finance, operations, and human resources,' said the release.
An increase in demand for graduates who are already skilled in the new technologies has prompted many business schools to design customised study programmes, said academicians.
'The market is changing, and so are recruiters' demands. Students are using AI more now, compared to previous years. However, there should be a balance between using AI and them losing their identity. We have made AI usage in the classroom more application-based so that Management students can use their own thought processes also,' B. Janarthanan, assistant professor, Department of Management Studies, National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi, told The Hindu. He added that new technologies had also been embedded into the pedagogy at the NIT-T.
New courses were introduced into the syllabus at Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) over two years ago, with the aim of equipping students with future-ready technology adoption. 'Most companies are expected to become more technology-dependent in the next few years, and we are preparing our students to be ready at the mid- or top-level of the job market. Out of 120 students, 80-90 prefer courses related to technology and analytics,' said BIM professor R. Subramanian.
Martech, Text mining and consumer sentiment analysis, Marketing Analytics; Fintech, Blockchain, Cryptocurrency and Derivative analytics in Finance are some of the new technology application-based courses being offered at BIM.
Academicians said that the need to balance technological expertise with ethical parameters would assume greater importance in the near future.

T-Mobile's 5G to power Comcast, Charter wireless business plans
Comcast and Charter Communications said on Tuesday they would establish a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that will use T-Mobile 's 5G network to serve wireless business customers, with plans to launch next year. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. As competition in broadband and pay TV intensifies, Comcast and Charter's new MVNO deal with T-Mobile underscores how the cable giants are seeking new growth opportunities by expanding into the business wireless market . The initiative will focus exclusively on providing wholesale mobile connectivity to Charter's and Comcast's business customers. The companies added that their existing long-term MVNO partnership would continue to support residential and current business customers. An MVNO is a mobile service provider that delivers phone services by leasing network capacity from established wireless carriers, rather than owning its own network infrastructure. Prominent MVNOs such as Tracfone, Mint Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile collectively cater to tens of millions of U.S. customers, offering cost-effective prepaid and no-contract plans.

I-T tribunal rejects Cong plea for tax exemption on ₹199cr income
NEW DELHI: The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal Tuesday rejected an appeal from Congress against the I-T department for withdrawing a tax exemption to the party for the assessment year 2018-19 and adding Rs 199 crore as its income through donations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The tribunal, headed by judicial member Satbeer Singh Godara and comprising M Balaganesh, declined to interfere with the department's assessment order against Congress. The I-T order rejected Congress's tax exemption for not filing returns for AY 2018-19 by the due date, and thus, added the income of Rs 199 crore to the party, on which it will be liable to pay tax. The appellate tribunal also refused to allow Congress to net its income against the expenditure on the grounds that it had violated section 13(A) of the I-T Act. The order also found violations of receiving cash donations of more than Rs 14 lakh, which were over Rs 2,000 each. Election Commission guidelines mandate that any donation above Rs 2,000 has to be through bank transfer. Congress's appeal was first rejected by the Commissioner of I-T (Appeal) after which the party approached the tribunal in March 2023. "Whether the assessee's impugned section 13A exemption claim violates clauses (b) and (d) of the first proviso thereto is concerned, we have already held that its return filed on Feb 2, 2019, was a time barred one, and the same stands academic and rejected accordingly," the bench observed. On the question of "netting" basis - claiming corresponding expenditure against receipts - the tribunal noted that the "High Court's decision has concluded the very issue in the department's favour - the legal position is that no deduction can be allowed with respect to the expenditure incurred by the political party for any purpose whatsoever if it fails to comply with the basic requirements of the Act's section 13A. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " "We thus conclude that given the fact the assessee has been held to have violated section 13A, third proviso in not filing its return within the prescribed due date, its impugned netting claim also deserves to be declined in very terms," the tribunal said dismissing Congress' appeal.
