PL: Everton bid farewell to Goodison Park with 2-0 win over Southampton

Hans India18-05-2025
After 133 years, 2,791 games, and 5,372 goals, Everton Football Club bid an emotional farewell to Goodison Park with a 2-0 victory over Southampton on May 18, 2025. The historic ground, affectionately known as "The Grand Old Lady," witnessed its final men's senior match, marking the end of an era for the Toffees.
The match was highlighted by a first-half brace from Senegalese forward Iliman Ndiaye, who scored in the 6th minute and again in first-half stoppage time, securing the win for Everton. Despite two disallowed goals for offside by striker Beto, the Toffees dominated the game, providing a fitting send-off for their storied home.
Captain Seamus Coleman, a club legend with 427 appearances since 2009, started the match but was substituted after 17 minutes, receiving a standing ovation from the fans. The substitution was seen as a symbolic gesture to honor Coleman's contributions to the club.
Goodison Park which opened in 1892, has been the site of numerous historic events, including hosting a semi-final match in the 1966 World Cup. While the men's team will move to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season, Goodison Park will continue to serve the community as the home of Everton Women and a venue for academy matches and community programs.
The 2-0 win also saw Southampton lose their 17th game at the venue, making the Saints their favourite opponent at the Goddison Park.
The atmosphere at Goodison Park was electric, with fans packing the stands and streets around the stadium to celebrate its rich history. Following the final whistle, supporters were treated to a special 'End of an Era' ceremony featuring appearances from current and former players, live music, and tributes to memorable moments at the ground.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's snub from India's Asia Cup squad angers R Ashwin: ‘Not fair… to bring Shubman Gill in, you…'

When one watches Yashasvi Jaiswal bat in Tests, one cannot stop thinking about his pure ability and how perfect a fit he would be in T20s. The effortless way in which he plays his shots makes Jaiswal a force to reckon with in every format of the game. Hence, it is no surprise that everyone is stunned by his omission from India's Asia Cup squad. Jaiswal is a part of the reserves list for the eight-team tournament; however, he failed to make the main squad as Shubman Gill was brought back into the team as the vice-captain. Yashasvi Jaiswal ignored for Asia Cup as Shubman Gill gets the nod ahead of him. (AP) Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was shocked by the call taken by the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar. He said there was no basis for the young Mumbai opener to be dropped, considering he was also the back-up opener in the T20 World Cup 2024. Jaiswal has played 23 T20Is for India so far, scoring 723 runs at a strike rate of 164.31. His last T20I came in July 2024 against Sri Lanka, coincidentally the same series in which Shubman Gill also played his last T20I for India before being picked for the Asia Cup. The selectors managed Gill and Jaiswal's workload, asking the duo to stay fit and be available for the Tests. This was the first time that every player was available for selection in T20Is, and Gill got the nod ahead of Jaiswal. 'See, I understand that selection is a thankless job. Leaving somebody out, telling someone they are dropped, it is not an easy thing. You have to speak to the players, you have to go through the sadness. I just hope Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal were given a call, and they were told the reasons behind not being picked,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. 'Genuinely, I understand Shubman Gill's selection. He is also the vice-captain. He has scored a lot of runs for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He has credentials to be picked in the T20I setup,' he added. Ashwin scrutinised Ajit Agarkar and the rest of the selection committee, saying Jaiswal was part of the T20 World Cup squad, so how could he be shown the door? The former India spinner also raised questions about Shreyas Iyer's exclusion from the squad. Also Read: Ravichandran Ashwin calls out Ajit Agarkar for being 'unfair' on Shreyas Iyer 'When you have Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener in the T20 World Cup 2024, to remove someone from the World Cup squad and bring in Shubman Gill. I mean, it's okay, I am happy for Shubman, but I'm very sad for both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. It is just not fair to these two kids,' said Ashwin. 'Sanju Samson is not going to play' Ashwin went one step further, saying that with Gill's inclusion, there is no chance that Sanju Samson will retain his place in the playing XI. There is strong merit to Ashwin's remark, as in the press conference, Agarkar confirmed that Sanju Samson only played as an opener, as Gill and Jaiswal were unavailable for selection in T20Is. The former India spinner, who represents Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, said the obsession with making one player the captain in all three formats needs to stop. 'Jaiswal has also been in some fine form. Maybe they are thinking of Shubman Gill as the leader for the future. Maybe he can be the all-format captain. But it is not necessary to have the same captain in all formats,' said Ashwin. 'What is sadder is that you have announced Gill as the vice-captain, so Sanju Samson's place is also under threat. Sanju is not going to play. Shubman Gill will play, and he will open the batting,' he added.

Bangladesh, Kazakhstan to be part of Asia Cup in place of Pakistan & Oman

With just 10 days to go for the first match, Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) finally announced the schedule for the men's Asia Cup hockey tournament. Pakistan, however, will not be part of it, having been replaced by Bangladesh in the eight-team tournament that will be held from Aug 29 to Sept 7 at Rajgir Sports Complex in Bihar. Oman also pulled out of the tournament at the last moment, with Kazakhstan taking their place. The remaining five teams taking part in the event besides hosts India are Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and South Korea. While India have been clubbed with Japan, China and Kazakhstan in Pool A, Pool B consists of Malaysia, Korea, Bangladesh and Chinese Taipei. After the pool stage, where the teams will play each other once, the top two teams from each pool will play in the Super4s. Once again it will be played in a round-robin format with the top two teams making it to the final. The winner will be awarded a spot in the FIH World Cup to be held next year in the Netherlands and Belgium. As far as the fixtures are concerned, Malaysia will play the tournament opener against Bangladesh, while India will hope to make a winning start when they take on China. Being the No. 1 side in Asia, Craig Fulton's men will undoubtedly come into the tournament as strong favourites. But hockey fans will certainly feel the absence of Pakistan. Their participation was always doubtful following the Pahalgam incident. However, the Indian govt had said it would provide visas to the players and even Hockey India was confident of their participation. But Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) refused to travel citing security concerns. AHF president Fumio Ogura, meanwhile, said in a statement, "The Asia Cup will bring together the very best of Asian hockey. With World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry enormous importance. We are confident this edition will showcase thrilling competition, inspire millions of fans, and leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Asia." Korea continue to be the most successful side in the tournament, having won the title five times in the past. As for India, they finished third in the last edition in Jakarta but it does seem they will finish on top this time around.
