
Ozone pollution puts essential crops in peril, reveals new study
Published in the journal Environmental Research, the study titled 'Surface ozone pollution-driven risks for the yield of major food crops under future climate change scenarios in India' combines historical trends with future projections using data from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase-6 (CMIP6).
According to the researchers, potential oxidant surface ozone is increasingly damaging crop productivity by infiltrating plant tissues and disrupting essential physiological functions, particularly photosynthesis. Under high-emission scenarios like SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5, wheat yields could decline by up to 20, while rice and maize could see losses of around 7% each after 2050. The Indo-Gangetic Plain and Central India are identified as especially vulnerable, with ozone exposure during crop growth stages potentially exceeding safe limits by up to six times. The threat is compounded by what the study refers to as a 'climate penalty' during India's rabi and post-kharif seasons, which is expected to worsen surface ozone levels.
Stating that the situation is deeply concerning, the study noted that findings have significant implications for our agricultural productivity and our progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of zero hunger and no poverty.
Despite the launch of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) to tackle urban air pollution, agricultural regions continue to be overlooked. The study stresses the urgent need for crop-specific air quality policies and the promotion of clean energy and low-emission farming techniques.
The research also explores biological mechanisms of ozone damage, noting that about 45% of surface ozone is absorbed through plant stomata, generating harmful reactive oxygen species that degrade critical enzymes such as RuBisCO. This disruption in photosynthesis reduces crop yields significantly.
While several previous studies in India have used short-term data to estimate yield loss from ozone exposure, this study stands out for its comprehensive assessment of future scenarios. It urges policymakers to transition from high-emission development pathways to more sustainable models such as SSP1-2.6, which could help limit crop damage and preserve national and global food security.
As India remains a major exporter of food grains to Asia and Africa, any significant loss in agricultural output could have global repercussions. The researchers call for immediate and coordinated actions to integrate air quality management into agricultural policy frameworks.

IIT Kharagpur, IIST exploring collaboration in medical technology
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) and the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) are exploring the possibility of collaborating in the area of medical technology for space-related applications, IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty said here on Sunday (August 10, 2025). The IIST's work in mission-class hardware design, start-up incubation and strategic collaborations position India not just as a participant, but as a leader in global space innovation, Prof. Chakraborty said, delivering the convocation address at the 13th convocation of IIST held at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Valiyamala. Recent achievements of the IIST students have been admirable, he said. 'The IIST is the crucible of India's space leadership, a place where dreams take the form of rockets, satellites and future-ready solutions,' he said. Space, Prof. Chakraborty said, is no longer the domain of a few, but the shared ambition of the entire planet. Yet, India has a unique advantage, he said. 'We know how to do more with less. We innovate not just for prestige, but for people. Space technology today is not an isolated vertical. It is a grand convergence, a meeting point of artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology, climate science, philosophy, medicine and even law,' he said. Referring to the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Chandrayaan 3 mission as a sparkling example of interdisciplinary excellence, Prof. Chakraborty urged the IIST students to envision 'movements' that make India a hub for responsible, inclusive space innovations, and policies that enable fair access to space resources. M. Mohan, Director, LPSC, said after the recent success of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission, ISRO is embarking on the development of complex systems for major missions. Among these, he listed the next-generation launch vehicle, Bharatiya Antriksh Station, Chandrayaan-4 sample return mission, Gaganyaan and Venus mission, which call for advanced manufacturing technologies for mass production of the systems. IIST Chancellor B.N. Suresh underscored the importance of self-reliance, stating that imports need to be reduced in strategic areas that were key enablers of national security. ISRO Chairperson V. Narayanan addressed the students in virtual mode. IIST Director Dipankar Banerjee presented a report on the academic activities. At the convocation, a total of 309 degrees were awarded, which included 124 BTech degrees, 17 BTech + MTech/MS dual degrees, 130 MTech and MS postgraduate degrees and 38 PhDs.

C Raja Mohan writes: Trump's techno-capitalism, tech broligarchy and India's challenge
An important anniversary in India's technological history passed largely unnoticed last week — the launch of the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in 1975. A pioneering collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), SITE used the American ATS-6 satellite to beam educational programmes in local languages to over 2,400 villages across six of India's most underdeveloped states. The content included primary education, health awareness, agricultural practices, and national integration. SITE remains a landmark in the technological imagination of India's developmental state. For the US, the project was an expression of 'scientific internationalism'— the Cold War-era belief that modern science and technology could advance peace and prosperity through international collaboration. But that idealism quickly faltered. Following India's 1974 nuclear test, Washington's enthusiasm for technology cooperation gave way to non-proliferation anxieties. It would take three decades to overcome these disputes and rebuild bilateral trust. This effort culminated in the launch of the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET) under President Joe Biden in 2023, aimed at reinvigorating India-US cooperation in advanced technologies. Whether ICET can survive renewed political turbulence in the bilateral relationship — marked by differences on Russia, trade, and Pakistan — remains uncertain. Yet, a more structural challenge looms: The increasingly divergent trajectories of the Indian and American technology ecosystems. Even in 1975, the SITE programme featured private sector participation. The ATS satellite was built by the Fairchild Corporation (now defunct). But in the years since, the American technology landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation. NASA, once the dominant actor in space, now shares the stage with private firms like Elon Musk's SpaceX, which conducts more launches annually than the government agency itself. Over the past two decades, America's dynamic technology sector has not only accelerated innovation but also given the US a strategic edge over its rivals. The US government continues to play a vital role — particularly in defence procurement and standard-setting — but increasingly acts as a catalyst rather than a controller. China, by contrast, has charted a different course. Since Deng Xiaoping's call for 'scientific modernisation' in the late 1970s, the Chinese state has pursued a centralised, mission-driven model of technological advancement. Decades of double-digit growth, rapid industrialisation, and heavy investment in scientific research and higher education have propelled China into the front ranks of global technological power, especially in AI and space technology. Despite starting later than India, China's civilian space programme now competes with that of the US and is expanding its global footprint through initiatives like the Digital and Space Silk Roads. India's own trajectory remains moored somewhere in between the American and Chinese models. Recent reforms have introduced greater dynamism into India's space sector, but Delhi is still some distance from fully mobilising its private sector to secure a larger share of the global space economy or rejuvenating its higher education and scientific research establishments. While India finds its footing, the global tech landscape is being reshaped by dramatic developments in the US. In recent weeks, the Trump administration has unveiled two major initiatives — on AI and cryptocurrency — that symbolise a novel approach to techno-politics. Unlike Biden, who sought to regulate and constrain Big Tech, Donald Trump has given it a free hand. In embracing Silicon Valley's libertarian elite, Trump is remaking the American state not as a regulator of big technology, but as its enthusiastic enabler. What emerges is a distinct philosophy of techno-capitalism: Unapologetically post-liberal, aggressively nationalist, fiercely deregulatory, and ambitiously expansionist. Trump's 2025 AI policy prioritises dismantling regulatory barriers, building data infrastructure, promoting AI-led manufacturing, and mobilising hundreds of billions of dollars in public and private investment. While all major economies aspire to grow AI, the combination of American capital and Silicon Valley's technological prowess sets the US apart. Trump's techno-capitalism also extends into financial innovation. The recently enacted 'GENIUS Act' marks a decisive break from the Biden administration's cautious approach to cryptocurrencies. The Act creates a framework for dollar-backed stablecoins, requiring them to be fully backed 1:1 by liquid US assets such as cash or short-term treasuries. It also mandates reserve disclosures and consumer protections, laying the groundwork for mainstream adoption of stablecoins as digital payment systems. The policy aims to reinforce the US dollar's role as the world's reserve currency and counter growing calls for 'de-dollarisation,' including from BRICS nations. Rejecting the idea of a central bank digital currency, the Trump administration is also setting up a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and has ended prosecutions of major crypto firms initiated during the Biden years. Here too, the motivation is not just economic—it is geopolitical. At the ideological heart of this techno-capitalist revolution is Peter Thiel, a venture capitalist and co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, and a staunch supporter of Trump's tech agenda. Thiel insists that true innovation arises not from state mandates or regulatory frameworks, but from visionary entrepreneurs liberated from liberal-democratic constraints. His worldview blends libertarian individualism with a muscular nationalism that sees China as America's principal technological adversary. This marks a decisive break from the techno-optimism of the 1990s, when the rise of the internet was seen as heralding a borderless, decentralised world where the state would gradually recede. That dream proved short-lived. Governments reasserted themselves through regulation, surveillance, and digital sovereignty. Today, we are witnessing the rise of a new state-capital compact—a 'tech broligarchy' in which Silicon Valley elites and Washington collaborate to pursue technological supremacy not for utopian ends, but for strategic advantage. This alliance is central to Trump's broader effort to reconfigure global trade, finance, and security. Whether one supports or opposes this project, its ambition and momentum are undeniable. If even a fraction of the current AI hype is realised and a portion of the planned investment materialises, American techno-capitalism will loom large over the world's economic future. India cannot remain untouched by these shifts. The celebrated Indian IT sector— long a symbol of the country's global economic integration and a major contributor to its GDP—now faces serious vulnerabilities. As AI begins to automate many of the services that defined India's IT outsourcing boom, traditional jobs may disappear or become obsolete. Add to this Trump's growing hostility toward H-1B visas, and the threat to India's digital workforce becomes even more acute. India's ambition to be a major exporter of tech talent could also be undermined by the West's rising techno-nationalism and hostility to immigration. We are only at the beginning of this techno-capitalist revolution. Will its march be inevitable and triumphant? The alliance between American populism and Silicon Valley could unravel over time due to internal contradictions or commercial rivalries. But the structural shifts now underway in American techno-capitalism—and their global implications—are likely to be enduring. For India, the imperatives are clear. There is an urgent need to overhaul the domestic tech sector, expand investment in scientific research, and better integrate private enterprise into national innovation strategies. The country must also prepare its industry, workforce, and regulatory institutions for a new era of technological transformation. India's Forests Are Greener—but Storing Less Carbon: New Study Reveals a Sequestration Crisis

This process of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it as biomass is called carbon sequestration. It is this ability of trees and plants that can help mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Indian government, much like many other governments and private companies around the world, is banking on forests and plantations to tackle climate change. As part of climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, the Indian government has pledged to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide) through additional forest and tree cover by 2030. There are ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, such as the National Afforestation Programme (NAP) and the Green India Mission (GIM), aimed at afforestation and plantation activities. GIM is one of eight 'National Missions' under the National Action Plan on Climate Change. Also Read | 'Maladaptation' fears might end up blocking climate funds for poor nations Over the past few years, India has experienced significant greening, driven by irrigated agriculture and plantations. But to be an effective climate mitigation tool, the greening should translate to effective carbon sequestration. A new scientific study says this is not happening. Published in the journal Resources, Conservation & Recycling last month by two scientists from IIT-Kharagpur, the study shows that in the last decade (2010-2019), carbon stock capacity declined by 5 per cent compared to the decade before (2000-2009). In some regions like the eastern Himalaya and the Western Ghats, the decline in forest carbon stock is as high as 17-20 per cent. 'Green-ness is on the outside. It is structural. And carbon uptake is a functional quality,' said Rahul Kashyap, the lead author of the study and Prime Minister's Research Fellow (PMRF) at CORAL, IIT Kharagpur. 'For Indian forests, the outer green-ness is increasing, but functional health, of which a key aspect is the ability to act as carbon sinks, is declining,' he added. The study notes how greening is translating to biomass production at lower rates than before. And the reason is reduced soil moisture due to climate change-driven warming and activities like deforestation and plantations. And this trend is set to continue till 2100. Jayanarayanan Kuttippurath, the other author of the study and an Assistant Professor at IIT Kharagpur, said, 'The atmosphere is continuously warming. The mitigation action the world is taking [to reduce the usage of fossil fuels] is not enough. And we are continuously emitting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. On top of this, we have forest fires and deforestation. This is why the translation from green-ness to biomass is also decreasing.' Plants under stress Temperatures are rising and soil moisture is decreasing, causing heat stress in plants, which are unable to produce biomass and sequester carbon dioxide at rates they used to earlier. 'There are forest-dwellers and their livelihood. We have a big forest economy, and this will also be compromised. In addition to this, we have a net-zero target by 2070. The declining carbon stock capacity is a big concern,' Kuttippurath said. The study is first-of-its-kind to estimate Ecosystem Photosynthetic Efficiency (EPE), which is a measure of translation of greenness to carbon uptake, across Indian forests. It finds that the largest declines in EPE are in the Eastern Himalaya, the Western Ghats, and the Indo-Gangetic Plain, which, interestingly, have the highest EPE in the country. 'We are losing quality forests' Over the last two decades, reports by the Forest Survey of India have shown how green cover and forest cover in India are increasing. But this includes lots of areas outside historical forests, such as plantations and agroforestry. 'Day by day, we are losing quality forests. We have different kinds of forests with different species and different kinds of disturbances like infrastructure development and invasive species. And climate change exacerbates the impacts of disturbances,' said Purabi Saikia, Associate Professor at the Department of Botany in Banaras Hindu University. As an ecologist, Saikia has conducted ground studies of forests across the country in States like Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu. 'Invasive species like lantana and parthenium are also part of the green cover, but they have low carbon sequestration compared to native trees,' Saikia explained. 'So, yes. We have increasing green cover but not in terms of forest productivity or ecosystem productivity,' she added. However, since the study is based purely on remote-sensing and predictions, Saikia called for more analysis based on ground-truthing. 'It is an important finding and the paper presents a good idea to carry forward with ground work in forests,' she added. In the paper, too, the authors note that India needs more studies on forest carbon dynamics that integrate remote sensing observations and ground-based measurements. Declining forest sink capacity is a global issue, too. A study published last month showed that forest sink capacity in Europe, too, is 'rapidly declining'. And yet another study from July showed that tropical forests the world over are losing drought resilience. On the issue of declining forest carbon stock in India, the authors warn that it is 'imperative' not to misconstrue forest-based mitigation as a solution to climate change and that forest protection and afforestation measures should be done more scientifically to secure historical natural forests.
