1 learner dies, others seriously injured in Ndwedwe taxi crash
One learner died, four suffered serious injuries, and a further six were treated and discharged after a horrific accident in Ndwedwe area on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that the minibus taxi in which the pupils were travelling rolled down an embankment.
While a number of allegations have been made, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma assigned a team to visit the scene with urgency.
'The team also proceeded to Montobella District Hospital to monitor the condition of the 10 learners who were injured,' said Duma.
'The extent of the injuries suggests extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.
'I have mandated the team to launch an investigation and assess the overall management of this scholar transport service and many others.
'In addition, I have mandated the Road Traffic Inspectorate and other law enforcement agencies across the province to be on full alert and do spot checks of scholar transport,' said Duma.
The MEC added that he has requested parents and learners to report any scholar transport concerns to the department's toll-free number 0800 055505 or WhatsApp 060 1055505.

Six-year-old dies in Mamelodi shack fire
A six-year-old child tragically lost their life in a shack fire in Mamelodi East Extension 6 on Sunday night, 27 July 2025. Tshwane firefighters responded swiftly to the blaze, managing to contain the flames and prevent further destruction, while six other residents—one of whom sustained minor burn injuries—escaped with their lives. Tshwane Emergency Service Department spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni said the incident was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre at about 21:33. 'Firefighting resources were immediately dispatched from Mamelodi Fire Station to the scene. These included a water carrier and a bush pumper.' On arrival the firefighters found out that three shacks were involved in fire. 'They immediately began with firefighting operations and managed to stop the fire from destroying all three shacks. 'They protected the main house and one shack. However, they discovered that in one of the shacks, a six-year old child had sadly suffered fatal burn injuries.' Mnguni said six other tenants survived the fire, including a child who had suffered minor burn injuries and was treated on the scene by the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services. The child was then transported by ambulance to Stanza Bopape Clinic for further medical observation. The South African Police Service and other roleplayers such as community leaders were also on the scene, and they assisted with incident management. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Tshwane Emergency Services Department urges communities to remain vigilant and be cautious during winter to prevent and eliminate incidents of this nature that can have a disastrous effect on families and the community. Third burned female body found in east, police investigate
Police in Silverton have launched a murder investigation, following the discovery of three burned female bodies found between June and July along the railway line between Waltloo and Denneboom train stations. According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, the bodies were found at the same location on separate dates over the past month. 'The police have opened three cases of murder following the discovery of burned female bodies between June and July,' said Sibeko. She confirmed the most recent discovery was made on Sunday, July 27. 'The details surrounding the incidents remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing,' she said. She added that in all three cases, members of the public alerted police after coming across the bodies. It is reported that the murders share a similar modus operandi, but the motive behind the killings remains unknown at this stage. Lerato Kganyago speaks out after being followed by unknown men
Lerato said she laid a trap at a restaurant to catch the 'thugs'. Media personality Lerato Kganyago says she has allegedly been followed by 'thugs' for some time, adding that a police officer allegedly failed to intervene when she recently confronted one of the suspects. The Metro FM presenter said she had long been aware that she was being followed until she set a trap and managed to confront one of them. 'I bravely got out of the car by myself, which I don't advise, and confronted one of them… standing next to a uniformed police officer, who said nothing while this confrontation happened, and only walked away when they realised I had been recording all of them… I only did this because I knew I had 'invisible' security around me… They are thugs!' she added.
