Four high school takeaways as the boys' and girls' basketball fields are whittled down
1. Bulldogs still dancing
Between Thursday and Friday, 31 basketball teams advanced into the final four of their division, and 30 of those teams were seeded seventh or higher.
The only exception? The 20th-seeded Old Rochester boys, who took down fifth-seeded Greater Lawrence in the Division 3 quarterfinals behind 22 points from senior

We'll have at least one more double-digit seed in the boys' semifinals, with No. 19 Rockport and No. 11 Westport meeting in a Saturday quarterfinal (1 p.m.).

Making history were Masconomet and Norwell, whose boys' basketball teams both became the first in program history to reach the state semifinals, while the Oliver Ames boys have advanced further than they have in 60 years, since claiming the 1965 Class C crown.

So far, the only division to go to chalk is Division 1 girls, which has No. 1 Wachusett, No. 2 Bishop Feehan, No. 3 Springfield Central, and No. 4 Braintree still competing.
With two more teams to play on Saturday (St. Mary's boys, Hopedale girls), no No. 1 seed has lost through the first three rounds, although our first three No. 2 seeds Attleboro (D1 boys), Mansfield (D2 boys), Dartmouth (D2 girls) were bounced Friday.
3. Three stars
There were plenty to choose from, but we whittled it down to these three:
Bourne's
Mike Dankert
, the 6-foot-5-inch senior kept the second-seeded Canalmen cruising through the Division 4 bracket with 29 points and 16 rebounds in a 74-48 win over No. 23 O'Bryant. Bourne has now won its three playoff games by a combined score of 225-131, with none being decided by fewer than 26 points.
Newton North's
Teagan Swint
, the only MIAA boys' player to be McDonald's All-American nominee proved why with 25 points and five blocks, including 12 points in the fourth quarter as
Somerset Berkley's starters, who with the exception of Max Finlaw all put up impressive numbers in an 88-60 Division 2 quarterfinal win over Pope Francis. Junior
Colten Pacheco
(29 points, 7 rebounds), senior
Finn Bjork
(21 points, 12 rebounds), senior
Brendan McDonald
(20 points, 8 assists), and junior
Dom Taylor
(12 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists) all stuffed the stat sheet.
Also of note, Dartmouth senior
Kat Cheesebro

Charles Barkley on NBA Finals Game 4: 'The Pacers blew this game... this is going to hurt'
The Indiana Pacers had a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter and looked in control and on their way to a 3-1 series lead in the NBA Finals. But then the offense went cold and stagnant, and the OKC Thunder closed like the best team in the NBA they are, finishing the game on a 12-1 run to snatch the game away with a 111-104 win and return home with a split in Indianapolis and homecourt advantage back in their hands. Charles Barkley didn't pull any punches in his postgame analysis on NBA TV. "No. 1, they gave it away," he said. "I thought you saw the difference between All-Stars guys and really good players and superstars. Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) brought this thing home. Like, 'Yo big fella, bring this home.' And I have no idea what the Pacers were doing on the offensive end. Me and Grant (Hill) were going crazy like, 'Yo man, get it to (Pascal) Siakam, he's your best 1-on-1 player. They didn't even run a play for him... It was so frustrating. Grant, we can say all we want to about Oklahoma City — the Pacers blew this game." Siakam, who led the Pacers in scoring with 20 points, took just one shot in the fourth quarter (a missed 3-pointer with 10 minutes left). "This is going to hurt. This game is going to hurt the Pacers because they had this game under control, they were playing well. OKC was like, "OK, we might be in trouble,' then all of a sudden, they let them get close..."

Foot fault: star's setback a blow for battling Blues
Carlton's finals hopes have received a huge blow after star midfielder Sam Walsh was ruled out for between five to six weeks with a foot injury. Walsh reported soreness in his foot at training on Friday and was sent off for scans, which revealed a hot spot. Carlton say there is no fracture in the foot and surgery isn't required, but a period of recovery is needed to allow the injury to settle. The Blues hope Walsh will return in either round 19 or 20. That means he will not only miss Sunday's clash with West Coast in Perth, but also games against North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Collingwood and Brisbane, before a possible return against Melbourne in round 19. Ready to 🔜. — Carlton FC (@CarltonFC) June 13, 2025 Carlton's season is already hanging in the balance at 5-7, and the loss of Walsh is a big blow to their hopes of clawing back into the top eight. Jaxon Binns has been called up into Carlton's 23 to take on West Coast. "Sam was unable to complete yesterday's main training session after reporting soreness in his foot," Carlton's football manager Brad Lloyd said. "Sam will need a period of recovery to allow his foot to settle before his he able to return to play." Carlton have already lost Nic Newman (knee), No.3 draft pick Jagga Smith (knee) and Brodie Kemp (achilles) for the rest of the season, while star forward Harry McKay will miss his second consecutive match due to knee soreness. West Coast have made three changes from the team that lost to North Melbourne by 10 points last week. Tom McCarthy, the No.1 pick from the mid-season rookie draft, has been named for his AFL debut, while Clay Hall and Bailey Williams return to the side. Premiership defender Tom Cole will spend a stint on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, while Brady Hough (illness) and Archer Reid (omitted) are the other outs. Meanwhile, All-Australian West Coast backman Jeremy McGovern faces an anxious wait after fronting the AFL's concussion panel on Thursday night. McGovern hasn't played since being concussed in the round eight loss to Melbourne on May 3, and the concussion panel will decide whether he can continue his decorated 197-game career.
