'In view of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, the Jammu Police has significantly bolstered the security arrangements by establishing joint nakas (checkpoints) at multiple strategic locations across the district,' a police spokesperson said.
The 38-day annual pilgrimage is scheduled to start on July 3 from the twin routes — the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in Ganderbal district — leading to the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine. The first batch of pilgrims will leave for Kashmir from the Jammu-based Bhagwati Nagar base camp a day before the start of the yatra.
Jammu, Jun 29 (PTI) Police set up a number of checkpoints on Sunday to bolster security arrangements in Jammu district and carry out daily anti-sabotage checks ahead of the Amarnath Yatra, which is scheduled to start from July 3.
He said the checkpoints have been set up in coordination with paramilitary forces to ensure a seamless and secure pilgrimage experience.
The checkpoints will be operational round the clock in high-sensitivity and high-mobility zones, including on national highways, city peripheries and routes leading to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp, the spokesperson said.
Personnel from police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and other agencies have been deployed for intensive frisking, surveillance and verification operations.
Senior police officers are personally monitoring the operations at the checkpoints to ensure alertness, professionalism and public convenience, the spokesperson said.
'The naka teams have been directed to maintain a balance between rigorous checking and respectful behaviour towards pilgrims and civilians,' he added.
Special attention is being given to vehicle checking, identity verification and detection of suspicious movement, supported by technical inputs and facial recognition systems (FRS) at vulnerable and crowded locations, he said.
'Instructions have also been passed to conduct random checks at hotels, guesthouses and lodgement centres,' the spokesperson said.
Police have urged citizens and pilgrims to cooperate with the naka teams, keep valid identity proofs and report any suspicious activity immediately. 'Public support remains crucial in maintaining peace and order during the holy yatra,' the spokesperson said.
The initiative reflects the unwavering commitment of the Jammu Police to ensure a safe, secure and spiritually-fulfilling Amarnath Yatra for all devotees, he added.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, Joginder Singh, along with the group commander of the SPG and other senior police officers, conducted a comprehensive security review along the yatra route, from the traffic checkpost at Nagrota to Saloora along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
The high-level team inspected deployment points and interacted with officers deployed along the route, the spokesperson said.
'A detailed briefing session was held to appraise the officers of the current threat scenario and the standard operating procedures to be followed while performing duties,' he said.
The officers were directed to conduct daily anti-sabotage checks, particularly in areas where expressway construction is underway, which have been identified as vulnerable zones, he said, adding, 'Emphasis was also laid on maintaining high alertness and ensuring coordinated efforts among all security agencies.' The SSP underlined the importance of inter-agency cooperation and a timely response to any situation, reiterating the administration's commitment to ensuring a safe and secure passage for all pilgrims. Railways To Prepare Reservation Charts 8 Hours In Advance

New Delhi: The Ministry of Railways has decided to prepare reservation charts for long-distance trains eight hours in advance, instead of the current four hours, to help passengers travelling from remote locations plan their journeys better. The decision was taken during a recent review meeting chaired by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, a statement issued by the ministry said. Under Vaishnaw's guidance, officials are working to prepare the reservation chart eight hours before the train's departure instead of the current four hours, it said. "It will benefit passengers travelling from remote locations or suburbs of major cities for catching long-distance trains. It will also provide more time to make alternative arrangements in case the wait list is not confirmed," the ministry said. "The new upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) will allow over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute. This will be an increase of roughly five times from 32,000 tickets per minute in the current PRS," it added. The ministry said the new PRS also has a multilingual and user-friendly booking and enquiry interface. In the new PRS, users will be able to submit their choice of seat and see the fare calendar. It also has integrated facilities for Divyangjan, students and patients, officials said. "Indian Railways will allow only authenticated users to book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and its mobile app beginning 1st July, 2025," the ministry said. It emphasised that OTP-based authentication will be done for Tatkal bookings from the end of July. The minister instructed officials to broaden the authentication mechanism for Tatkal bookings. "The authentication should be done using Aadhaar or any other verifiable government ID available in the user's DigiLocker account," the statement said. According to the ministry, these measures reflect the Railways' continuous efforts to modernise its systems and make them more citizen-friendly.

There is no fear (due to the Pahalgam attack). Arrangements are good. The administration is with us," a devotee who came to the centre for registration told news agency ANI. Multi-Layer Security The authorities have designed an elaborate security framework involving CRPF, J&K Police, and the Indian Army. A total of 581 companies from various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) alongside personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police have been deployed for the Amarnath Yatra 2025. Jammu Police has also set up several checkpoints across the city in coordination with paramilitary forces as part of daily anti-sabotage inspections. These will remain active 24×7 along highways, city outskirts, and near the base camp. Advanced tools like Facial Recognition Systems (FRS) are also being deployed at crowded areas. Police are also conducting random checks at hotels, guesthouses, and lodgment centres, targeting suspicious movement. For the first time, jammers would be installed to protect the convoys from potential threats. Satellite phones will be provided to security personnel. Pilgrims and pony riders will be monitored using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Dedicated PCR vans from the police and CRPF will accompany the yatra. The CRPF has also rolled out a robust multi-layered security plan along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) to ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims. Officers were briefed on SOPs and alerted to risks, especially in ongoing construction zones. In addition to these measures, a comprehensive deployment will include Road Opening Parties (ROPs) to secure and clear the routes, Quick Action Teams (QATs) for immediate response to threats, Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS) will detect and neutralise explosives, and K9 units (specially trained sniffer dogs) and drones will be used for aerial surveillance. Security Forces Conduct Mock Drill Security forces and the civil administration conducted intensive inspections and trial runs ahead of the pilgrimage. At Yatri Niwas, Jammu's base camp, buses were dispatched under full security cover to test logistics and response systems. In a preemptive effort to ensure safety during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra 2025, a joint mock landslide drill was conducted by the Indian Army, CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the JKSDRF (Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force) at Samroli, Toldi Nallah, on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Sunday. The exercise aimed to assess emergency preparedness in case of landslides or natural disasters during the pilgrimage. Jammu Deputy Commissioner Sachin Kumar Vaishya said the entire dry run process was being monitored closely. 'The Divisional Commissioner, IG, and all senior officers are monitoring the entire dry run process of the drill. At the same time, all preparations have been completed here. Tokens will be distributed at Saraswati Dham. We urge the people to come in large numbers. We will provide them with all the necessary things, and no one will face any issues. We have full preparations for everything," he said while addressing reporters. The simulation involved rescuing stranded vehicles and providing immediate aid to injured pilgrims, with security and disaster response teams efficiently coordinating evacuation and medical assistance.
