‘You don't require him, you require a dictionary': SC to Haryana SIT probing Ali Mahmudabad's posts
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi observed that the SIT was formed specifically to investigate the two social media posts and asked why it was expanding the scope.
The top court directed the SIT to complete its inquiry within four weeks, legal news website LiveLaw reported.
The bench pointed out that the SIT was constituted specifically to understand the true meaning of the social media posts and to ascertain if they constituted any offence. The bench asked why the petitioner's devices were seized.
"We just want to know from SIT...for what purpose they have seized devices? We will call them (officers)," Justice Kant told Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who was representing the State.
Noting that the petitioner has cooperated with the investigation and surrendered his devices, the Court relaxed his bail conditions and directed that he should not be summoned again.
"You don't require him (Mahmudabad), you require a dictionary," Justice Kant said.
The Court reiterated that the investigation must remain confined to the contents of the two FIRs and not become a broader inquiry.
Mahmudabad, who teaches Political Science at Haryana-based Ashoka University, was arrested on May 18 for his remarks regarding press briefings on Operation Sindoor, India's military action in May on terror camps in Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, in South Kashmir on April 22.
The arrest was based on a complaint filed by Yogesh Jatheri, the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha in Haryana, reports said quoting his lawyers.
On May 21, however, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Mahmudabad and directed the constitution of a three-member SIT to investigate the case.
The Haryana Police said the two FIRs were lodged at the Rai Police Station in Sonipat – one based on a complaint from the chairperson of Haryana State Commission for Women, Renu Bhatia, and the other on the complaint of a village sarpanch.
Mahmudabad's remarks were annexed to the commission's notice, and in one of them, he purportedly said right-wing people applauding Col Sofiya Qureshi should demand protection for victims of mob lynchings and "arbitrary" bulldozing of properties.
Mahmudabad was alleged to have described the media briefings by Col Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh as "optics".
"But optics must translate to reality on the ground, otherwise it's just hypocrisy," he added.
The commission previously said an initial review of Mahmudabad's remarks raised concerns about the "disparagement of women in uniform, including Col Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh, and undermining their role as professional officers in the Indian Armed Forces".
Mahmudabad, 42, is a historian, political scientist, writer, poet and a faculty at Ashoka University, Sonipat, Haryana.
Born in Lucknow on December 2, 1982, Ali is the son of Mohammad Amir Mohammad Khan, popularly known as Raja Sahab Mahmudabad, who spent about 40 years in a legal battle to reclaim his ancestral property seized by the government under the Enemy Properties Act. Raja Saheb passed away in October 2023.
Key directions and developments from the hearing:
Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad is free to write articles and social media posts, except on the subjudice matter.
-The Court clarified that its earlier orders did not restrict his expression.
-The SIT does not need to summon him again for questioning. The Court noted that the petitioner has already joined the investigation and his devices have been examined.
-The probe must be completed within four weeks, strictly limited to the language and content of the two Facebook posts related to the violence in Pahalgam.
-Justice Surya Kant questioned the course of the SIT's probe, observing: 'Why is the SIT, on the face of it, misdirecting itself?'
-The Court reminded the SIT that it was set up specifically to examine whether any offence was made out from the phrasing used in the posts—not to launch a roving inquiry.
- Interim protection from arrest granted to Mahmudabad will continue.

Bihar Police identify accused in Paras Hospital murder case, raids underway
Patna: Following the broad daylight murder of prisoner Chandan Mishra inside Paras Hospital in Patna on Thursday, police have identified all five assailants using CCTV footage from the hospital lobby and have launched intensive raids to arrest them. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by City SP (East) has been constituted to probe the case, with the Bihar STF assisting the SIT. The SIT has identified the escape routes used by the five accused after the attack. Patna Police, along with STF teams, are conducting raids in various areas, including Patna, Phulwarisharif, and adjoining Hajipur, to nab the accused. However, no arrests have been made so far. On Thursday morning, five armed criminals entered Paras Hospital, one of Patna's largest private hospitals, and gunned down Chandan Mishra, a prisoner from Buxar who was undergoing treatment on parole. According to CCTV footage, the five criminals, four of whom were wearing caps, were seen entering ward number 209, where Mishra was admitted. Each carried a pistol, and after entering the room, they executed the murder swiftly. While the attack was underway, the hospital lobby outside the ward remained silent, with no police personnel or private security visible in the vicinity. Witnesses from adjacent wards came out upon hearing the gunshots but, terrified by the scene, retreated immediately. After committing the crime, the assailants managed to escape easily. The incident has raised serious questions about the security arrangements for prisoners admitted for treatment in private hospitals. Chandan Mishra, who was a notorious criminal and an inmate of Beur Jail, was under treatment at Paras Hospital on parole. 'Where were the police personnel deployed for the security of Chandan Mishra, and why were security arrangements so lax despite the risk of a gang war?' is a question now being raised across Patna. Following the incident, a group of people, including the family members of Chandan Mishra, sit on a Dharna outside the gate of Paras Hospital. Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma has stated that police are actively pursuing the case and the criminals will be arrested soon, adding that the incident has been taken very seriously. The attack carried out in broad daylight inside a high-profile hospital has put the Patna Police under intense scrutiny and has raised concerns about law and order in Bihar's capital.

ED, ATS, and now land fraud: Chhangur Baba's legal troubles mount
Pune/Lonavala: In a dramatic twist to the controversies surrounding self-styled spiritual leader Chhangur Baba, Mumbai-based businessman Mohammad Ahmed has come forward with serious allegations of intimidation, fraud, and criminal conspiracy related to a high-value land deal in Lonavala. Speaking to the media, Ahmed claimed that he was 'threatened and harassed' by Chhangur Baba and his associates after a registered agreement for the sale of land turned sour. Mohammad Ahmed had entered into a land deal in 2023 with Chhangur Baba for a plot measuring 1.87 lakh square feet in Lonavala. As part of the agreement, Chhangur Baba committed to paying Rs 16.5 crore to Ahmed through a registered agreement. However, after paying an initial amount of Rs 49 lakh, Chhangur Baba allegedly began delaying the remaining payment. The agreement was valid for 12 months, but before the term could expire, Ahmed alleges that Chhangur Baba began delaying the transaction and attempting to take control of the land without fulfilling the financial terms. "He began avoiding further payments, and when I insisted, I was threatened and pressured. It was clear that he wanted to grab the land without honouring the agreement," Ahmed said. Fearing foul play, Ahmed filed a civil suit in the Vadgaon Maval Court in Pune seeking cancellation of the agreement. He also accused Chhangur Baba of attempting to misuse his influence in Uttar Pradesh to have false criminal cases filed against him. 'When that didn't work, he tried to use local goons to threaten me and my family. Out of fear, I remained silent. But now, with so many cases surfacing against him, I have decided to go to the Pune Police,' Ahmed added. Ahmed further alleged that close aides of Chhangur Baba, including Abid Rabbani and Sameer Srivastava, were involved in managing his unaccounted wealth and hiding their real identities. He claimed that proceeds from other land sales, including five bighas in Chitayan village in Uttar Pradesh's Utraula area, were being funnelled into illegal religious conversion activities. The new allegations come as Chhangur Baba, whose real name is Jamaluddin, faces serious legal scrutiny. Earlier this month, he was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly masterminding a large-scale religious conversion racket. He is said to have targeted members of the Scheduled Castes and economically weaker sections across multiple states. Two of his key associates, Neetu alias Nasreen and her husband Naveen, have also been sent behind bars. In the wake of the ATS complaint, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered a case on July 9 to probe money laundering and foreign funding linked to the alleged conversions. Authorities have revealed that Chhangur Baba amassed assets worth over Rs 100 crore in a short span. This raises serious questions about the source of his wealth and the network supporting him. Ahmed has now decided to he would file a formal complaint with Pune Police, alleging land fraud, criminal intimidation, and attempted extortion. 'This is not just about one deal - it's about a much larger racket involving illegal funding, conversion, and intimidation. It's time the truth comes out,' he said.

Kerala May Deliver Double-Edged Mandate In Favour Of Congress-Led UDF
In view of Vote Vibe findings, many wonder whether Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi would risk their credibility to push Venugopal to become the CM face in Kerala According to Vote Vibe survey agency, the 2026 edition of Kerala assembly polls, a strong anti-incumbency wave, a clear desire for change is set to see the downfall of Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF. But the Congress-UDF faces a leadership challenge. Nonconformist Shashi Tharoor is the most popular choice as Vijayan's successor. Tharoor's popularity ratings are 28.4 per cent while his party rivals for the coveted post trail badly. For instance, AICC general secretary in charge of organisation, K C Venugopal is pegged at a poor 4.2 per cent while others, namely V D Satheeshan and Sunny Joseph, have popularity ratings of 15 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively. Other contenders such as Ramesh Chennithala and K Murleedharan have a support of 8.2 and 6 per cent popularity ratings. Significantly, Vote Vibe has conducted the survey after Operation Sindoor which implies that Tharoor's unconventional stand has not undermined Thiruvananthapuram ratings within and outside the UDF-Congress circles. Tharoor was part of the government delegation that was sent abroad to propagate India's stand against terrorism. Subsequently, some of the remarks made by Tharoor became a subject of controversy, drawing criticism from the grand old party. Tharoor went on to describe Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a 'national asset' in a write-up in a national daily. Tharoor's popularity as indicated by Vote Vibe survey is going to pose multiple challenges for AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. A number of UDF allies namely IUML, KC, RSP, CMP and KDP representatives reportedly favour Tharoor as UDF's chief ministerial face. Some of the key findings of the survey are: 1. Strong Anti-Incumbency Wave: 47.9% 2. Strong Desire for Change: 62% want to replace their current MLA 3. Party Trust Dynamics: UDF leads with 38.9% 4. Leadership Issue: Shashi Tharoor leads (28.3%), but 27.1% are uncertain. LDF: KK Shailaja tops (24.2%), current CM Pinarayi Vijayan only 17.5%, with a massive 41.5% uncertain among LDF supporters. 5. Electoral Implications: Clear anti-establishment wave; UDF positioned as a change alternative. In view of Vote Vibe findings, many wonder whether Kharge and Rahul Gandhi would risk their own credibility to push Venugopal to become the chief ministerial face in Kerala simply because most AICC office bearers and party leaders living in Delhi want him out as General Secretary in charge of Organisation or simply because they believe that Congress party's fortune will change once KCV is out from the national party headquarters or as a shadow of Rahul Gandhi? Vote Vibe has also conducted an in-depth survey for Bengal stating that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continues to enjoy significant public support, positioning her as a key player in the upcoming electoral contest. Mamata Banerjee remains the most popular choice for Chief Minister, with 41.7% support, the survey has concluded. The author is a Visiting Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation.
