Oil falls as IEA raises supply forecast, investors await US-Russia meeting

LONDON: Oil prices fell on Wednesday after the IEA noted supply overtaking demand this year, while investors awaited Friday's meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Brent crude futures fell 45 cents, or 0.7%, to $65.67 a barrel at 0831 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures edged down 53 cents, or 0.8% at $62.64.
Both contracts settled lower on Tuesday.
Trump and Putin are due to meet in Alaska on Friday to discuss ending Russia's war in Ukraine, which has shaken oil markets since February 2022.
'Oil prices drifted lower on expectations that Friday's summit would not result in additional sanctions on Russia, ensuring the country's oil continues to flow predominantly to the south and east,' said PVM Oil analyst Tamas Varga in a note.
The International Energy Agency on Wednesday raised its forecast for oil supply growth this year following OPEC+'s decision but lowered its demand forecast due to lacklustre demand across the major economies.
Long-term support, however, came from OPEC's updated monthly report on global supply and demand, Varga said, which raised its global oil demand forecast for next year and trimmed its estimate for growth in supply from the United States and other producers outside the wider OPEC+ group, pointing to a tighter market.
Investors also awaited further cues after an industry report showed US crude stockpiles climbed last week.
Crude inventories in the United States, the world's biggest oil consumer, rose by 1.52 million barrels last week, market sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday. Gasoline inventories dropped while distillate inventories gained slightly.
Analysts polled by Reuters expect today's Energy Information Administration report to show crude inventories fell by about 300,000 barrels last week.
The EIA on Tuesday in its Short Term Energy Outlook (STEO) forecast Brent prices to average less than $60 per barrel in the fourth quarter, which would be the first quarter with average prices that low since 2020, stating that growth in the global oil supply would surpass growth in demand for petroleum products. Trump says he will set tariffs on steel and semiconductor chips in coming weeks

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he would announce tariffs on imports of steel and semiconductor chips in coming weeks. 'I'll be setting tariffs next week and the week after on steel and on, I would say, chips,' Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he headed to a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. He said the rates would be lower at the start to allow companies to build up domestic manufacturing in the U.S., rising sharply later, following a pattern he has also outlined for tariffs on pharmaceuticals. He gave no exact rates. 'I'm going to have a rate that is going to be lower at the beginning - that gives them a chance to come in and build – and very high after a certain period of time,' he said. Trump said he felt confident that companies would opt to manufacture in the United States, rather than face high tariffs. Trump has upended global trade by imposing sharply higher duties on nearly all countries' exports to the United States, along with tariffs on specific sectors, such as automotive. Trump says gold will not face tariffs after customs confusion Trump in February raised tariffs on steel and aluminum to a flat 25%, but he announced in May that he would double the rate to 50% to boost domestic manufacturers. It was not immediately clear if another tariff increase on the metals was in the offing. Trump said last week he would impose a tariff of 100% on imports of semiconductors, but companies that committed to building up manufacturing in the United States would be exempt. His remarks were made in tandem with an announcement that Apple would be investing an additional $100 billion in its home market.

Global LNG: Asian spot LNG prices ease as markets eye Trump-Putin meeting

LONDON: Asian spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices declined this week on soft demand and strong storage inventories and as markets awaited the outcome of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin later today. The average LNG price for September delivery into north-east Asia was at $11.65 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), down from $11.90/mmBtu last week, industry sources estimated. The contract for October delivery was estimated at $11.45/mmBtu. 'This (meeting) may not only be decisive for Ukraine but also for the fate of Russian sanctions and economic development between the two nations. It may not be surprising if Russia would open discussion on Arctic LNG 2, as it's clearest link to LNG markets,' said Klaas Dozeman, market analyst at Brainchild Commodity Intelligence. Sanctioned by the United States, Russia's 19.8 million tons per annum (mtpa) Arctic LNG 2 terminal has had two of its threetrains installed and could quickly add to global supply if sanctions were loosened. Conversely, Russia's Yamal and Sakhalin LNG export terminals export about 30 mtpa and could be subject to future sanctions if those were bolstered, said Martin Senior, head of LNG pricing at Argus. Global LNG: Asian spot prices inch up on geopolitical, supply concerns Geopolitics remain the wild card, said Arturo Regalado, senior LNG analyst at Kpler. 'A lack of progress could reignite concerns over tighter sanctions on Russian energy, as well as potential secondary U.S. tariffs on Russian oil and gas buyers,' he said. While the weather has turned a slightly hotter again in Asia it has not attracted major spot purchases - partly due to the pressure on oil prices - which meant oil-indexed long term LNG contracts became competitive against spot purchases, Dozeman said. Argus' Senior said that some Chinese demand has emerged, with Beijing Gas buying two cargoes below $12/mmBtu. The firm last year said that it viewed $12/mmBtu and above as too expensive for LNG imports. Prices are seen lower next week as high Chinese inventories continue to keep north-east Asian spot demand soft, with stable Pacific supply and seasonal temperatures adding to the bearish tone, said Kpler's Regalado. In Europe, gas prices at the Dutch TTF hub were trading in a narrow range on Friday with heatwave across the continent was starting to ease and as markets focused on the Trump-Putin meeting. S&P Global Commodity Insights assessed its daily North West Europe LNG Marker (NWM) price benchmark for cargoes delivered in September on an ex-ship (DES) basis at $10.582/mmBtu on August 14, a $0.415 /mmBtu discount to the September futures price at the TTF hub. Argus assessed the price at $10.540/mmBtu, while Spark Commodities assessed it at $10.534/mmBtu The U.S. arbitrage to north-east Asia via the Cape of Good Hope is still incentivising U.S. cargos to deliver to Europe. Similarly, the arbitrage via Panama is pointing to Europe, said Spark Commodities analyst Qasim Afghan. Global LNG freight rates remained relatively steady, with the Atlantic rates assessed at $36,000/day and Pacific rates at $33,250/day, Afghan added.

Wheat up 2-4 cents, corn up 3-5 cents, soy up 7-9 cents

CHICAGO: The following are U.S. expectations for the resumption of grain and soy complex trading at the Chicago Board of Trade at 8:30 a.m. CDT (1330 GMT) on Friday. Wheat - Up 2 to 4 cents per bushel Wheat futures advanced overnight along with CBOT corn and soybeans. Traders were watching U.S. President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss a ceasefire deal for Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine are major grain exporters. CBOT September soft red winter wheat was last up 3-1/4 cents at $5.06-3/4 per bushel. K.C. September hard red winter wheat was last up 3-1/2 cents at $5.07-3/4 per bushel, and Minneapolis September wheat was last up 1/2 cent at $5.72-1/2 a bushel. Corn - Up 3 to 5 cents per bushel Corn futures crept higher overnight, with the December contract moving back above $4 per bushel, amid technical buying and short covering, analysts said. The market dropped to contract lows on Tuesday after the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted the U.S. harvest would be a record and above analysts' expectations. Dry weather threatens to stress some crops heading into the end of August, Commodity Weather Group said. Expectations for a large Brazilian harvest hung over the market. CBOT December corn was last up 3-3/4 cents at $4.01 per bushel. Wheat up 1-2 cents, corn up 1-2, soybeans up 10-12 Soybeans - Up 7 to 9 cents per bushel Soybean futures traded higher, extending this week's advance. Lower-than-expected U.S. production and carryover estimates, issued by the USDA on Tuesday, have supported gains. Next week, traders will monitor results from an annual Pro Farmer crop tour that scouts corn and soy fields across the U.S. Midwest. A National Oilseed Processors Association report due later on Friday is expected to show the U.S. July soybean crush increased slightly after a dip in the processing pace in June, analysts said. CBOT November soybeans were last up 7-3/4 cents at $10.36-1/4 per bushel. On Thursday, the contract reached its highest level since July 3.
