Not a drill: Aussie icon Nagi from RecipeTin Eats is hosting a lunch in Sydney soon

Time Out4 days ago

Now, this is exciting. Nagi Maehashi – Aussie icon, author of two record-smashing cookbooks (Dinner and Tonight), and the brains behind a seriously banging sausage roll recipe – is teaming up with Plate It Forward's Shaun Christie-David for a super special one-off Sydney lunch. Held at soul-warming Ukrainian eatery Kyiv Social – winner of Time Out Sydney's Impact Award 2025 – this edition of Mum Cha will see Nagi, her mum Yumiko, and RecipeTin's head chef Jean-Baptiste 'JB' Alexandre join forces with Shaun and his mum Shiranie to serve up a delicious eight-course meal to hungry Sydneysiders (hi, that's us) that celebrates culture, generations and stories.
Guests will enjoy four shared dishes by Nagi, Yumiko and JB, and four from Shaun and Shiranie, plus a cocktail on arrival and free-flowing red and white wine. It's happening on Saturday, June 28 – kicking off from 1pm. And our favourite bit? Dozer, Nagi's beloved senior golden retriever, will also be making a special guest appearance.
A social enterprise, Plate It Forward employs, trains and supports people from marginalised backgrounds and those who have experienced adversity (including refugees from war), shining a spotlight on their stories through their venues, including Kyiv, Colombo Social, Kabul Social and Kolkata Social. And as well as creating tasty, bulletproof recipes, Nagi is also passionate about supporting people doing it tough – she's the founder of RecipeTin Meals, a not-for-profit food bank that has donated more than 300,000 meals to Sydneysiders in need. So this is a beautiful collab in our books.
Created by Shaun and Shiranie, Mum Cha is a monthly celebration of the women and mothers in life who inspire us – and a way to bring people together over love and a banging meal.
Tickets to Mum Cha with Nagi, Yumiko and JB, as well as Shaun and Shiranie, cost $150 per person. They go on sale at 4pm today (Thursday, May 29), Sydney time. You can snap yours up here.

Magda Szubanski gets emotional as she thanks family, friends and fans for their support after revealing her stage four cancer diagnosis: 'The wind beneath my wings'

Magda Szubanski has expressed immense gratitude in the wake of her devastating stage four cancer diagnosis. The beloved Aussie comedian, 64, who revealed she is battling Mantle Cell Lymphoma last week, took to Instagram to thank her family, friends and fans for the outpouring of support. Speaking in a video posted on Sunday, Magda said she had been 'overwhelmed' by the response to her announcement. 'I just wanted to say a massive thank you for all the love and support,' she said in the clip. 'It's just been so moving and, really, youse are the wind beneath my wings. Thank you very much, love you all. Sorry I can't reply this. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'It's pretty overwhelming, but I just feel so loved.' Last week, Magda shocked her followers when she revealed she was battling a rare and fast-moving blood cancer. She appeared on camera with a shaved head after beginning her treatment to fight the disease. 'Hello my lovelies. So, the head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks because I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, very serious lymphoma,' she began. 'It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately. But the good thing is I'm surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team. 'Honestly, we have the best in the world here in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, so I feel very fortunate. 'It's pretty confronting. It is a full on. But new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time.' Magda said she has started a treatment called the Nordic protocol, which treats Mantle Cell Lymphoma by shrinking the tumours with a combination of drugs administered in five phases. It's known as the Nordic regimen based upon its clinical trial sites in Denmark and Norway. The actress explained she will be 'lying very low' due to her weak immune system. 'I won't sugar-coat it: it's rough. But I'm hopeful. I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I've never felt more held by the people around me,' she said. 'Please keep a distance though because I will be very immunocompromised. So I can't hug no more. 'Don't hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.' The Kath & Kim star said the cancer was discovered during a routine breast screening. 'This is an obscure cancer and was only discovered incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up,' she explained. 'TBH, I've been feeling pretty rats**t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and - voila! So the take away is - get tested and listen to your body! 'For now, just know I'm in good hands, good spirits - but I reserve my human right to be a cranky old moll. Love you all, Mags.'

'Addictive' Aussie Mars chocolate launches in UK supermarket

From Kylie Minogue to Bluey, the UK loves an Australian export — but some are more well-received than others. The latest Aussie favourite to hit British shores is Mars Pods, which launched on Iceland shelves last week. Priced at £3.50 per 160g bag, these shell-shaped snacks (not to be confused with the brand's Dolce Gusto hot chocolate pods) feature crunchy wafer topped with caramel and smooth milk chocolate. Despite being rarely spotted over here, they've long remained a staple Down Under, where they were invented by the confectioner back in 2008. On the K-Mart website, Mars Pods have an overall rating of five stars, with shopper Melanie calling them 'yummy'. Similarly, Reddit users describe the treats as 'orgasmic', claiming: 'They are impossible to stop eating.' Metro senior entertainment report Pierra Willix agrees, saying 'it's been a sad three years without them' since she moved to the UK from Perth. 'Pods might not sound particularly appealing, but they are a go-to movie night snack across Australian households,' she adds. 'The crunch of the wafter biscuit mixed with the sweet chocolate filling is surprisingly addictive — it's incredibly easy to devour an entire bag yourself.' However, the reaction from Brits hasn't been as overwhelmingly positive. Under a Facebook post about the launch on the Food Finds UK group, Sammi Jane said they looked 'banging', but Christopher Granton – who'd managed to get hold of them in B&M – commented: 'They were absolutely awful to be honest!' Over on TikTok, @tommyl6770 balked at the price tag, describing them as a 'rip off'. To decide for yourself, head down to your local Iceland. If you're heading to the supermarket solely to get your Mars Pods fix though, it may be worth calling ahead, as stock varies from store to store. Last year, another iconic Australian chocolate bar was released here in the UK, sending fans into a frenzy. More Trending Tim Tams – beloved by Margot Robbie – combine crunchy biscuit, a velvety cream filling and smooth chocolatey coating. And from the moment they became available on the shelves of Waitrose, they proved an instant hit with customers. 'I absolutely should not eat a whole sleeve of TimTam cookies for dinner, no matter how good they taste with my cold brew,' @DCLovesDestiel wrote on X, formerly Twitter. View More » 'Tim Tams are the best,' added @ElizaPlume212. 'I leave half a suitcase empty when I visit family. I go home with as many Tim Tams as will fit.' Do you have a story to share?
