Masterstroke or damage-control? BJP's caste census sets ball rolling in Bihar
In a politically significant decision ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government has announced that caste enumeration will be conducted alongside the upcoming decennial national census. The move is widely interpreted as a calibrated attempt to counter the opposition INDIA bloc's growing demand for a nationwide caste census — an issue that has gained traction in Bihar's deeply caste-sensitive political landscape.advertisementThe announcement comes amidst speculation that the BJP is seeking to pre-empt a possible division of Hindu votes along caste lines, which could undermine its electoral prospects in a state where identity politics has historically overshadowed religious consolidation.Bihar had already conducted a state-level caste survey in 2023 under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led then Mahagathbandhan government, which included the Janata Dal (United), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and the Congress. The survey's findings were made public on October 2, 2023. At the time, the decision to undertake the survey had received unanimous support from all parties in the state, including the BJP, which was in the opposition.
Yet, demands for a nationwide enumeration persisted, with both Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his then-deputy Tejashwi Yadav pressing the Centre to take up the issue. Ironically, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, during recent visits to Bihar, criticised the state-conducted survey and called for a fresh national caste census — despite his party being part of the government that carried out the 2023 exercise.advertisementPolitical analysts view the Centre's decision as both a tactical masterstroke and a damage-control measure. "The BJP has failed to project a strong Hindutva figure like Yogi Adityanath in Bihar and has had to engage with the region's entrenched caste arithmetic," said Abhay Mohan Jha, a Patna-based political commentator.By embracing caste enumeration, the BJP appeared to be adapting to the ground realities of Bihar's politics, where electoral outcomes have long been shaped more by caste coalitions than communal mobilisation. Analysts suggested that the saffron party is aiming to neutralise one of the Mahagathbandhan's central campaign planks, while simultaneously retaining key allies at the Centre, inlcluding Nitish Kumar and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan.THE HISTORICAL PRECEDENTThe BJP's move also appeared to be shaped by past electoral setbacks. In the 2015 Bihar elections, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav had successfully turned the tide in his favour after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat suggested a review of the reservation policy — fuelling fears among OBCs, SCs, and STs of a rollback in affirmative action.Caste is still the cornerstone of electoral strategy in Bihar, with the RJD banking on its traditional Yadav-Muslim base, and the Janata Dal (United) leaning on support from Kurmis, Koeris, OBCs, and Mahadalits.advertisement"Our demand for caste census is longstanding. It will provide accurate data for planning and ensure the development of marginalised communities," Nitish Kumar said in response to the Centre's recent announcement.Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary echoed the sentiment from the BJP's side, stating, "The caste census will enable better socio-economic planning for deprived sections of society".OPPOSITION'S 'IDEOLOGICAL VICTORY'RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav hailed the move as a belated acknowledgement of socialist politics. "The first caste survey was done in Bihar under our 17-month Mahagathbandhan government. The issues we raised three decades ago are now setting the national agenda. We'll continue to make these Sanghis dance to our tune," he said.Even Rahul Gandhi welcomed the government's 'sudden' decision to include caste enumeration in the forthcoming census after "11 years of opposing it". He also credited Congress's sustained campaign and said that it was the pressure put by the grand old party on the government for the caste census has worked."It doesn't matter what the BJP thinks. We have shown that we can pressure the BJP into doing the caste census," Gandhi said at a press conference. "We wholeheartedly welcome this decision but demand a clear implementation timeline," the Gandhi scion said.Must Watch

‘Reflection of inclusive governance': Delhi CM on Transgender Welfare and Empowerment Board
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday announced the formation of Transgender Welfare and Empowerment Board, which will be responsible for addressing the grievances of the community, and will also draw up schemes and policies for the welfare of transgenders. Describing her government's decision as a 'powerful reflection of inclusive governance in Delhi', Gupta said, 'This is not merely a legal procedure, but a symbol of our unwavering commitment to ensure dignity, rights, and opportunities to the transgender community.' Sharing the details, the CM said, 'This is a practical and powerful step towards building an empowered viksit (developed) Delhi. Our government is committed to ensuring equal rights for all. ' With the latest government move, transgenders will be able to self-declare their gender identity and obtain identity documents from the District Magistrate. The CM said that the board will also ensure the timely issuance of identity certificates and ID cards. Besides, the BJP government is also planning new initiatives for the community, which will include the construction of third-gender toilets in government buildings, dedicated hospital wards, and gender-specific health services in government hospitals, officials said. The government also plans to conduct sensitisation and awareness campaigns in educational institutions and workplaces and set up temporary shelters, employment training, and social security schemes tailored for the community. 'We are committed to building a Delhi that stands as a model of equality, respect, and inclusion. This decision reaffirms the values of equality and justice enshrined in the Indian Constitution and marks a revolutionary step toward mainstreaming the transgender community,' the CM said. 'Purple City' Meanwhile, Gupta also met Dr Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat. Officials said that the objective of this meeting was to hold a detailed discussion on improving accessibility in sports, education, and public services for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the Capital. The CM said that under the 'Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan', all government buildings and sports stadiums in the city will be made disabled-friendly. She also said the government is planning to extend the campaign at the city level and transform Delhi into India's first 'Purple City', a model of urban accessibility and inclusion. The campaign is structured around the 'Sarkar, Samaj, Bazaar (government, society, marketplace)' framework. Infrastructure will be aligned with national accessibility standards in collaboration with government agencies; inclusion will be promoted at the grassroots level by engaging all 21 categories of disabilities, senior citizens, and the local community; and cost-effective, sustainable solutions will be developed in collaboration with vendors, innovators, and CSR partners, the CM said. Gupta also said that there also plans to organise 'Purple Fest' as part of the Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan. The CM has directed the officials concerned to draft a detailed plan for the event. 'Through this fest, the government aims to promote a positive outlook and greater sensitivity in society toward the capabilities, talents, and rights of persons with disabilities…,' the CM said.

Tension at Durgadi Fort as rival Shiv Sena factions clash during Id-ul-Azha prayers
Tensions escalated in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday (June 7, 2025) after members of both the Eknath Shinde-led and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led factions of the Shiv Sena attempted to reach Durgadi Fort while Id-ul-Azha prayers were being offered at its foothill. According to police officials, protestors from both factions tried to ascend to the Durga temple atop the hill during the course of the Id-ul-Azha prayers being held at the base, resulting in chaos in the area. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were in effect, and several protestors were subsequently detained for violating the restrictions. Leaders from both sides, including Shinde faction functionary Ravi Patil and Uddhav faction leader Vijay Salvi, led rallies demanding that 'Durgadi Fort should be freed'. Their convoys converged at Shivaji Chowk, near the Durgadi temple, where slogans were raised by supporters of both groups. 'Police took measures to prevent protestors from both factions from reaching the fort. The protestors attempted to breach the barricades, triggering scuffles and a standoff with the police. We detained several members in preventive custody so that it does not escalate,' Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende said. Durgadi Fort has long been at the centre of a communal dispute regarding the control of a mosque located within its premises. Access to the Durga temple is typically restricted during Id-ul-Azha to facilitate prayers at the foothill. Members of the Shiv Sena have criticised the arrangement, alleging discrimination against Hindu devotees and calling for equal access to the site. The Idgah located at the fort has been under litigation since 1976, when the Majlish-e-Mushavreen Majjid Trust filed a suit seeking control. In 2024, the court ruled in favour of the State government.

Social Security June 2025: Stimulus checks could be delayed this month - Here's why
Workers at the Social Security Administration (SSA) are raising concerns that some people might see delays in their payments over the next few weeks. The warning comes as the agency shifts its focus to nearly 900,000 complicated cases. SSA employees told USA Today that this change in focus could mean late or missing checks for thousands of Americans. These delays could affect people making routine updates to their accounts, like changing a bank or home address. This is important because nearly 70 million Americans depend on Social Security each month for essentials like rent, groceries, and healthcare. The agency is currently carrying out changes tied to the Social Security Fairness Act, which was passed under former President Donald Trump's administration. The law gives benefits to people who paid into the system but were previously not eligible—such as teachers, police officers, firefighters, and other public workers. Also Read: E-Verify mismatch case issue: What exactly happened at the SSA and how to resolve? Drew Powers, founder of Illinois-based Powers Financial Group said, "More than 2 million of these cases were straightforward enough to be automated, but the remaining 900,000 claims are more complicated and must be approved by hand," as quoted by Newsweek report. Although the White House says these updates should not affect current Social Security payments, SSA workers say there may still be delays for routine changes, like updating direct deposit info or sorting out Medicaid billing. Employees have been told to prioritize the remaining cases under the Fairness Act. "Using automation, SSA has already expedited over $15.1 billion in long-delayed retroactive payments to more than 2.3 million individuals affected," White House spokesperson Liz Huston said previously. SSA workers also say they've been given a deadline of July 1 to complete the updates, which is creating a backlog and slowing down responses to other types of requests.
