Duty-free market access to US cotton, accepting agricultural items under limited quotas — these are among the possible concessions that the industry has suggested ahead of the crucial round of negotiations later this month when the US team is expected to arrive in India, The Indian Express has learnt. Earlier this month, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had sought suggestions from industry executives on ways to sweeten the trade deal with the US. While some sectors have proposed incentives to accommodate US products, industry sources said the recent escalation in tension between New Delhi and Washington — due to additional tariffs over the Russian oil trade — is turning popular sentiment against a trade deal. Importing duty-free US cotton is one of the areas being suggested to the government, which would also benefit domestic manufacturing amid declining cotton production in the country. Notably, Bangladesh, which has signed a deal with the US, had also offered a similar concession. The US market accounts for nearly 30 per cent of India's total apparel exports. A government official said that quotas for American agricultural items have also been considered, but these do not include genetically modified (GM) products. There is significant resistance to GM crops in India, and only one GM crop — Bt cotton — is approved for cultivation. However, no GM food crop is commercially grown in India. Queries emailed to the Commerce and Industry Ministry on the issue remained unanswered till press time. Meanwhile, following the steep tariff announced by the US, the industry has sought immediate relief — like expansion of the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme to more sectors, and the Interest Subvention Scheme (ISS) for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). An exporter who did not want to be named said that established brands are not cancelling orders, but have begun putting them on hold, pending the outcome of negotiations slated for later this month. 'Everybody [US importers] is saying, give us at least three weeks to revert — so, till the US negotiators reach India by August 25, and then maybe some relief could come. Indian exporters can absorb five to seven per cent tariff. Pharma has margins, so the challenge is less there. But in most other areas, margins are low. Other items — say proprietary items like what Apple produces — can withstand the pressure, but footwear and textiles have little margin and the competition is intense,' the exporter said. Another exporter said that higher tariffs could increase exports during the 21-day window. However, if the 50 per cent duty comes into effect, Indian goods will be worse off as compared to China, Bangladesh, Vietnam and most of the other competitors. An executive operating in the gems and jewellery sector said the industry has sought support from the government on the lines of the intervention during Covid, as concerns over imports of rough diamonds still remain and Indian goods may not remain competitive in the US market after 25 per cent tariffs. The Indian Express reported on August 3 that the government has kicked off an exercise to thrash out concessions across sectors that can be offered in the tariff negotiations later this month. Key economic ministries have been asked to examine what they can still afford to offer to sweeten India's deal when the US team visits on August 25. Families of 65 victims from Air India Flight AI-171's deadly crash have hired Beasley Allen, a prominent US aviation law firm that represented families in the Boeing 737 MAX disasters, to pursue legal action against Boeing and Air India. The firm is exploring product liability claims against Boeing in US federal courts. (REUTERS) The firm, led by aviation attorney D. Michael Andrews, is exploring product liability claims against Boeing in US federal courts and Montreal Convention claims against Air India in UK courts, though no lawsuits have been filed yet. 'Our firm presently represents families of 65 victims. We are determined to follow the data to uncover how and why this tragedy occurred,' Andrews said. 'The families deserve answers and are pleading for transparency.' The Boeing 737 MAX cases that established Beasley Allen's reputation involved two crashes that killed 346 people between 2018 and 2019 - Lion Air Flight 610 in Indonesia and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in Ethiopia. Boeing ultimately paid $2.5 billion under a 2021 deferred prosecution agreement, including a $243.6 million criminal penalty, $1.77 billion to airlines, and $500 million for crash victim families. Boeing has since settled more than 90% of the claims and paid billions more in individual compensation to families, with the company acknowledging liability for the crashes caused by the faulty Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), US Department of Justice records showed. The causes for the crash of flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, from Ahmedabad on June 12, is not yet clear. He urged Indian authorities to release all data, including cockpit voice recorder transcripts, to enable global experts to assess the cause comprehensively, warning that selective information could lead to misinterpretation. 'I suspect a technical or design fault is being concealed, with blame shifted to the pilots,' said Trupti Soni, who lost her brother and two sisters-in-law in the crash and hired the firm to seek accountability. The preliminary report also paraphrased conversation from the cockpit voice recorder capturing one pilot questioning the other on why the fuel was cut-off, with the other denying responsibility. The report did not identify which of the pilots said what. Andrews highlighted recent Boeing 787 incidents to suggest systemic problems: a United Airlines flight from Dulles to Munich declared a Mayday and returned due to engine failure, whilst a LATAM flight experienced Ram Air Turbine deployment, typically triggered by significant power or hydraulic failure. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of India leads the inquiry with participation from the US National Transportation Safety Board, the UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch and Boeing representatives. Imtiaz Ali, whose brother Javed, wife and two children—all British nationals—died in the crash, said he plans to initiate legal action within two months, hoping for court judgements within two years. Under the legal agreement, families pay no fees unless financial recovery is secured. If clients terminate representation, Beasley Allen retains a lien of either 30% of the most recent settlement offer or an amount equal to accrued time and expenses, whichever is greater. The firm may withdraw if it deems the case cannot proceed, and no specific outcomes are guaranteed. The Tata Group, which owns Air India, offered ex gratia compensation of ₹1 crore for families of deceased passengers and ₹25 lakh for ground victims. The company established the AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust with ₹500 crore, funded equally by Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, to support affected families' long-term needs, particularly children who lost parents, by providing scholarships for education, medical coverage and financial assistance to ensure stability for dependents. CNF, CNA take over Falam trade centre in Myanmar
Aizawl: Chin National Front (CNF) and its armed wing, Chin National Army (CNA), have taken over the administration of Falam township's India-Myanmar No 2 trade centre (Rihkhawdar) in Chin state of Myanmar, leader of the Hualngoram People's Organisation (HPO) said on Thursday. The trade centre is the main trading point with the Zokhawthar India-Myanmar border trade hub in Champhai district of Mizoram. Rihkhawdar India-Myanmar No 2 trade centre has been the most flourishing trade hub with India in Mizoram sector, with 62 trade items being allowed for border trade in the section. However, the formal border trade is yet to take off even after the then Union commerce and industries minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated a land customs station at the India-Myanmar border trade centre at Zokhawthar on March 25, 2015. Unofficial commercial activities continue between India and Myanmar in the sector, even without formalisation of the trade. " The agreement came after the Chin National Organisation (CNO) and its armed wing, Chin National Defence Force (CNDF), militias attacked Rihkhawdar, Khawmawi and nearby villages on July 2 and captured the HPO/CDF-Hualngoram camps before withdrawing from the area on July 10, following retaliatory attacks by CNA cadres. CNF/CNA is the main ethnic armed organisation (EAO) in Chin state raised on March 20, 1988. The area, especially Rihkhawdar and Buannel, is a tourism hotspot, attracting large number of tourists from Mizoram as well as other parts of the country and even abroad.
