BJP & BJD spar over govt's one-year performance
Bhubaneswar: With the BJP-led govt in Odisha nearing its first anniversary in power, ruling party MLAs and opposition BJD locked horns over the administration's performance on Wednesday, highlighting contrasting narratives of success and systemic failures.
BJP MLAs Jayanarayan Mishra and Irasis Acharya, separately praised the Mohan Charan Majhi-led govt for what they termed as "widespread development" across the state. "This has been a historic year for Odisha," said Sambalpur MLA Mishra, emphasising significant initiatives for farmers and women's welfare, during a media interactions on the anniversary of party's election victory in Odisha. He also challenged the BJD to account for its previous 24-year tenure.
Bhatli legislator Acharya said the govt and BJP would present detailed report cards showcasing its "glorious performance" across various sectors. "From farmers to women, youth to the poor, Odisha has witnessed remarkable positive changes," he claimed.
However, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty countered these claims by citing a May 15 note sheet from the chief minister's office that acknowledged significant administrative delays.

"Files are pending at various levels without sufficient justification, from ministers to department secretaries and directors," Mohanty told a press conference.
He criticised the govt's plans for grand celebrations, questioning their appropriateness when internal communications indicate administrative bottlenecks. "How can they celebrate so-called successes when their own documents reveal systemic failures?" he asked.
The political face-off comes exactly one year after BJP's victory in the assembly election, marking the end of BJD's long tenure in power.

'Census delay no accident, delimitation not a coincidence', says Stalin
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin on Friday accused the BJP-led central government of deliberately delaying the national Census and orchestrating the delimitation process with a hidden agenda. Calling the Census delay 'no accident' and the delimitation exercise 'no coincidence,' he said, 'The danger I warned of is at our doorstep.' In a post on social media, he alleged: 'There is a sinister design in how the BJP-led Union Government is implementing the national Census and the subsequent delimitation. Developed states, especially in the non-Hindi speaking South, which followed population control norms, will now be punished.' He argued that states which disregarded population control for years would be rewarded with additional seats in Parliament. This, he said, distorts the federal structure and unfairly benefits neglect over progress. Stalin noted that he had already 'warned about this design' and cited senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's detailed explanation of 'how this sleight of hand is unfolding.' He said it was time to remain vigilant and prepare strategies to defend the South's representation. 'The 2027 Census will form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data. This gives the Union BJP government the means to restructure parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the southern states,' he alleged. While the Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the concerns of affected states will be considered, Stalin described such assurances as vague. He insisted that the situation calls for a clear commitment in Parliament and the introduction of a Constitutional amendment. He added: 'Just look at what happened after Article 370 was abrogated. The Union government spoke of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory. This is the track record of BJP we are dealing with.' Stalin warned that if delimitation is carried out using the 2027 Census, the democratic influence of the southern states would be severely diminished. He also criticised the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), saying, 'Betrayers like the AIADMK choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival,' but that the people of Tamil Nadu, under the DMK's leadership, would not allow the state to suffer for its developmental success.

Guwahati: Aspirants preparing for the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) preliminary test scheduled for June 8 have urged authorities to postpone the examination in view of the devastating floods that have disrupted their preparation and displaced many candidates. The plea for postponement comes after incessant rainfall across Assam over the past week caused widespread flooding, washing away study materials and forcing numerous aspirants to seek refuge in relief camps. "The APSC examination is a critical opportunity for thousands of aspirants seeking public service positions. Conducting the exam under these adverse conditions would be unjust and discriminatory, particularly to candidates from marginalised and flood-hit regions. A postponement is essential to ensure a level playing field," said Nabadeep Borgohain, general secretary, Satro Mukti Sangram Samiti. Asom Chatro Parishad (ACP) president, Trinayan Barua expressed that the current government has been conducting various recruitment exams in a transparent way, so we request the government, along with APSC, to look into aspirants' concerns hailing from flood-affected areas. Rate-cut boost: Rupee jumps 11 paise to 85.68 against dollar; market rally and CRR cut lift sentiment
The rupee appreciated by 11 paise to close at 85.68 against the US dollar on Friday, reversing early losses after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) delivered a surprise 50 basis point repo rate cut and announced a phased 100 basis point reduction in the cash reserve ratio (CRR). The local unit opened weak at 85.91, down 12 paise from the previous close of 85.79. But sentiment turned sharply positive after the RBI's unexpected rate action, which supported growth prospects and lifted domestic equities. The rupee touched an intra-day high of 85.66 and a low of 86 before settling higher, PTI reported. "The rupee led the pack among Asian currencies, buoyed by the RBI's surprise 50 basis point rate cut. This decisive, growth-driven policy move provided a significant boost to the local currency and fuelled optimism among domestic equity investors," said Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst at HDFC Securities. At the policy briefing, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the decision to move to a 'neutral' stance from 'accommodative' reflected a data-dependent outlook going forward.
