Hasan Ali eyes national team comeback

Express Tribune21-04-2025

Karachi Kings' vice-captain Hasan Ali has expressed his confidence about returning to the national side after an impressive performance in the ongoing PSL X.
"My job is to perform. I want to represent Pakistan again - not just to be in the team, but to contribute to wins," he said. "I want to help Karachi Kings lift the PSL X trophy."
The 30-year-old said he was pleased with his recent performances, crediting his hard work at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for the turnaround.
"I'm quite satisfied with my personal performance. I worked really hard at the NCA to overcome the shortcomings in my bowling. I made technical adjustments and re-modified a few things, which are now yielding results - first in the National T20 and now in the Pakistan Super League (PSL)," he said.
He highlighted his persistence during challenging times and how domestic cricket played a crucial role in his comeback.
"Even when I was dropped, I went back to domestic cricket, performed well, and earned my place back. That's always the path - performance is the only way back."
"The PSL gives us the opportunity to share dressing rooms with international stars, but domestic cricket is equally important. It's a platform where you can truly refine your skills," he said.
Hasan admitted that he has matured both as a person and as a player over the past year and a half. "With time, a person changes. Half of my career has passed, and now that I'm a senior player, I should carry myself accordingly. There's a time to enjoy, but there's also a time to fulfill responsibilities. The learning process never ends," he concluded.
Sahibzada Farhan aims for permanent spot in national team
Islamabad United's opening batter, Sahibzada Farhan, has expressed his determination to transfer his impressive performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and National T20 Cup into international cricket.
In a conversation a local news channel, the 29-year-old cricketer clarified that his goal is not just to make a comeback to the national team but to secure a permanent place in the squad. He stated, "My aim is not just to play a couple of matches and make a comeback. Whenever I return to the national team, I want to make a permanent spot for myself and play for a long period."
Sahibzada Farhan had an outstanding performance in the last National T20 Cup, scoring 605 runs in 7 innings, which included 3 centuries and 2 half-centuries. His stellar performance in the domestic tournament played a key role in him securing a place in Islamabad United after being overlooked in the PSL draft.
Farhan revealed that his initial century in the National T20 Cup boosted his confidence, saying, "My goal was to perform well in the tournament and attract the attention of PSL teams."
Rejecting the perception of being just a domestic performer, he emphasized, "People used to say that I only score runs in domestic tournaments, but my performance in PSL should be enough to silence them because PSL is a top-tier league, and performances here carry immense value."
Acknowledging the challenges of making a place as an opener in the national team, Farhan pointed out the abundance of talented openers in the squad. However, he stressed that players should not be judged solely on the basis of two or three matches; consistent chances and performance are key to securing a spot in the team.
Farhan also expressed his ambition to score more centuries in PSL, stating, "My aim is to score at least one or two more centuries this PSL so I can break the record for the most centuries in a year. I don't settle after one or two innings; I want to play an important role in helping my team win."

Biomechanics lab being set up at NCA: Aqib Javed

LAHORE: Director High-Performance Aqib Javed has announced setting up of a biomechanics laboratory here at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), which will not only help assess bowling actions but also support injury prevention from the Under-15 level to first-class cricket players. 'We have also acquired new coaching tools to help batters, bowlers and fielders enhance their skills,' he said, adding: 'Also, we are acquiring Baseball technology to improve the art of spin bowling and launching an information portal at the NCA to highlight its activities, which will be reintegrated with regional cricket.' Talking about the short- and long-term plans he has set for himself as Director High Performance, he said, 'Over the next six months, I have set myself a target to bring about visible improvement. We are coordinating with head coach Mike Hesson to identify areas where players need focused development. The long-term plan focuses on nurturing U-15, U-17, and U-19 players.' On Coach Education Course, Aqib said, 'We already have qualified coaches from Level 1 to Level 4. It is a misconception that Pakistan lack coaches. We are going to introduce 'game education', which will cover coach, umpire, trainer and physio education. This will expand the pool of qualified professionals and boost their confidence.' He said, 'After completing the Level 3 coaching course, coaches will need to specialise in a specific area batting, bowling or fielding. This will enhance their expertise and then they will go to work with franchise cricket.' In an interview hosted by the former Test fast bowler, Aqib discussed about various academy projects covering men's, women's cricket as well as age-group cricket. He shared his thoughts on enhancing coach education system. On his vision for the High-Performance Centre, Aqib Javed said, 'The role of NCA needs to be clearly defined. Its primary function should be to fill the gaps evident in the Pakistan team across all three formats. We have compiled a list of players, identifying a need to have three backup players on the back of one player.' On the allocation of academies for different age groups and women cricketers, Aqib revealed, 'The Karachi High Performance Centre will now cater to women cricketers, providing facilities to support their diet, training and skill development. The Multan HPC will be dedicated to U-19 players, with a group of 30 selected for specialised training. The Faisalabad centre will be used for U-17 players, while Sialkot's HPC will focus on grooming 30 U-15 players.' When asked what he wants to achieve as an administrator after working in the current post, Aqib replied, 'I have set a target for the next six months where noticeable progress can be seen. After a year, I want people to say, what great facilities this academy has.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Hasan bags hat-trick in Vitality Blast

Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali delivered a match-winning performance, taking six wickets including a hat-trick, as Birmingham Bears defeated Derbyshire Falcons by 58 runs in the Vitality Blast at Edgbaston on Sunday. It was the Bears' second consecutive home win, strengthening their position in the tournament. Batting first, the Bears posted a strong total of 199 for 6. Skipper Alex Davies and Tom Latham gave the hosts a flying start, adding 79 runs for the first wicket. Latham scored a steady 58 from 42 balls, while Davies smashed 49 off just 29 deliveries. Although Derbyshire pulled things back in the later overs—thanks to Pat Brown's 3 for 40—the target was still a tough one. Derbyshire's chase started disastrously, slipping to 28 for 4 within the first four overs. Despite a fighting 50 off 37 balls from Ross Whiteley and a handy 46 from skipper Wayne Madsen, the Falcons were bowled out for 141 in 17.1 overs. Hasan Ali was the star of the show with the ball, finishing with remarkable figures of 6 for 23. After picking up early wickets, he returned to clean up the lower order and claim a hat-trick. His three consecutive victims were Ross Whiteley (caught at long-off), Alex Thomson (caught at mid-on), and Ben Aitchison (bowled). George Garton also had a memorable game, equaling the T20 record for the most catches in a single innings by a non-wicketkeeper with five. He contributed with the bat too, hitting 12 runs off the final three deliveries he faced. Garton's sharp fielding helped dismiss key Derbyshire batters, including Caleb Jewell, Aneurin Donald, and David Lloyd. Derbyshire, already dealing with injuries, were without veteran all-rounder Samit Patel due to a calf issue. They had to bring in Fynn Hudson-Prentice on loan from Sussex, but he couldn't stop the team's top-order collapse. With this dominant win, the Bears continue to look like a strong, well-balanced side. Derbyshire, on the other hand, are struggling badly, having now lost all four of their matches in the competition.

Pak to make two changes for BD tour

The Pakistan team is expected to have two new additions for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series, which is likely to take place in July. According to reports, left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi and spinner Sufiyan Muqeem are likely to return to the national side. Shaheen last featured in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand in March this year, where his performance was below expectations — taking just two wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 10.23. Sufiyan, who also played in the same series, appeared in only one match but impressed with two wickets at a remarkable economy rate of just 3.00. Meanwhile, the door remains open for star batter Babar Azam regarding his inclusion in the national squad, as he has reportedly been assured of future opportunities. The preliminary schedule for Pakistan's T20I tour of Bangladesh has been finalised, with the team expected to arrive in Dhaka on July 18, sources confirmed on June 1. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has drafted the initial itinerary and shared it with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The T20I series will commence on July 20, followed by the second and third matches on July 22 and 24, respectively. All three matches are scheduled to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. This tour is not part of the ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP). The series was arranged following discussions between senior officials of the PCB and BCB on the sidelines of the ICC Champions Trophy preparations, which Pakistan is set to host later this year. For context, Pakistan's white-ball team recently entered a new chapter under the leadership of Mike Hesson, the former New Zealand coach. The 50-year-old made an immediate impact, guiding the team to a 3-0 T20I series whitewash over Bangladesh - Pakistan's first home series victory since December 2021. Hesson holds in-depth discussion with Shaheen The second day of the national training camp in Lahore saw seven players participate in the Wednesday morning session, including Shaheen Shah Afridi, Abdullah Shafique, Mehran Mumtaz, Khurram Shehzad, Haider Ali, Khawaja Nafi, and Ahmad Daniyal. Additional training also took place during the afternoon session, under the supervision of head coach Mike Hesson and the coaching staff specialising in bowling, batting, and fielding. According to sources, fast bowler Shaheen Afridi did not participate in ground drills. Having returned from abroad after the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Afridi arrived in Lahore on Wednesday morning, specifically to meet head coach Mike Hesson. The two held an in-depth discussion regarding future plans for the team. In a social media post, Mike Hesson expressed his satisfaction with the session at the National Cricket Academy, calling it an important opportunity for both coaches and players to familiarize themselves with one another. He shared images from the training session, emphasising its significance in building rapport within the squad. Babar Azam had attended the opening day of the camp, while Mohammad Rizwan will join on the final day. The three-day camp, involving 22 of Pakistan's top white-ball cricketers, commenced at the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) Ground, as announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday. Players were divided into three groups, reporting to camp on June 3, 4 and 5, respectively. The first group—comprising Babar Azam, Abbas Afridi, Saud Shakeel, Salman Mirza, Shahid Aziz, and Usman Khan—took part in various sessions on Tuesday under the guidance of the national team management, led by Hesson. According to sources, the PCB is using the camp to inform players about the team's future direction, while also assessing their fitness levels and recent performances. Furthermore, head coach Hesson is scheduled to meet with top-performing players individually to discuss the roadmap ahead for Pakistan's white-ball squad. Pakistan's white-ball team recently entered a new chapter under the leadership of Hesson, the former New Zealand coach. The 50-year-old made an immediate impact, guiding the team to a 3-0 T20I series whitewash against Bangladesh — Pakistan's first home series victory since December 2021. Following this series win, the team is expected to take a brief break before potentially returning to Bangladesh next month for another T20I series.
