MMEA foils attempt to smuggle RM15m worth of synthetic drug precursors from Melaka shore
ALOR GAJAH, May 5 — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled a chemical smuggling attempt and seized drug precursors worth RM15 million in Melaka on May 1.
MMEA acting deputy director-general (operations) Rear Admiral (M) Mohd Zawawi Abdullah said the seizure, which is the largest recorded this year, was also the first involving precursors smuggled out of Melaka for sale in a neighbouring country.
Investigations and intelligence gathering led to the discovery of 15 boxes wrapped in black plastic stacked on rocks along the shore of Pengkalan Balak, near the Sailing Training Centre here, he added.
'Inspections conducted at 9.40 pm found 179 one-litre bottles filled with chemicals used in processing synthetic drugs, capable of producing about 150 kilogrammes (kg) of such drugs, believed to have been sent to the location using land vehicles before being loaded onto boats.
'No arrests were made at the location as we believe the smugglers abandoned the materials after realising authorities were conducting patrols,' he said in a media conference about the seizure at the Melaka and Negeri Sembilan MMEA Office in Kuala Sungai Baru today.
Mohd Zawawi also said that preliminary tests indicated that the chemical mixtures also contained methamphetamine, ecstasy and nicotine, and that it could be used for electronic cigarettes.
'The seizure provides a clear indication that there are attempts by neighbouring countries to produce or process synthetic drugs in Malaysia, as previous seizures were of processed drugs,' he said, adding that the precursors have been sent to a laboratory for further testing.
The case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Poisons Act 1952, he added. — Bernama

Two trawlers detained for illegal fishing near Kudat coast

KUDAT: Two trawler-type fishing boats were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritim Malaysia) in Kudat waters on Sunday for operating less than three nautical miles from the shore. Kudat Maritime Zone Director Commander Hasbullah Omar said the vessels were detected at around 6.30pm, about 2.6 nautical miles northeast of Marina estuary, through Sabah's Sea Surveillance System (Swasla). Advertisement A patrol vessel dispatched under Ops Sejahtera, Ops Pluto Timur, Ops Cegah Pati and Ops Tiris found the boats trawling nets within prohibited waters and detained six individuals, including two locals and four Indonesians with valid documents. Another boat was detained at 7pm the same evening, about 2.2 nautical miles off Tagumamal waters, carrying nine crew members, one of whom was a Filipino with questionable identification. Five Indonesians held for murder
KLUANG: Police have arrested five men in connection with the death of an Indonesian man at an oil palm plantation here. Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the suspects, aged between 21 and 31, were arrested at 1am yesterday. 'At 9.36am on Saturday, we were alerted about a man in his 30s who had died at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital after being stabbed in the left side of his chest. 'Further investigation led to the arrest of the five suspects, who are all Indonesian men,' he said in a statement yesterday. The suspects, who have no criminal records, have been remanded for seven days. 'We are still investigating the cause of the fight that led to the man's death,' ACP Bahrin said. He urged those with information about the case to come forward and assist the police investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. In an unrelated case, ACP Bahrin said the police arrested a drug-positive personal driver after he had been involved in an accident. The 40-year-old man was arrested at 6.30am on Friday after testing positive for methamphetamine. 'The suspect was driving towards Kluang town from Taman Sri Kluang and suddenly veered into the opposite lane. 'He collided head-on with another car in that lane,' he said. The suspect was uninjured while a 36-year-old businessman in the other car suffered injuries to his hands and had some abdominal pain. After the incident, the suspect was taken to the Kluang police headquarters' Narcotics Crime Investigation Division for a urine test. The suspect also has a criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for self-administering dangerous drugs.
