US imposes sanctions on Palestinian charities for allegedly funding Hamas
The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed sanctions on five people and five entities across the Middle East, Africa and Europe, accusing them of being prominent financial supporters of Hamas' military wing under the pretense of conducting humanitarian work in the Gaza Strip and around the world.
Those sanctioned include the Gaza-based charity Al Weam Charitable Society, which is accused of being controlled by Hamas, along with its executive director Muhammad Sami Muhammad Abu Marei.
Turkey-based charity Filistin Vakfi and its President Zeki Abdullah Ibrahim Ararawi were also targeted for sanctions. Charities in Algeria, the Netherlands and Italy were also targeted for sanctions.
The department is also targeting a separate charity linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, or PFLP.
A 2024 Treasury report on terrorist financing highlights how online crowdfunding is increasingly done under the guise of soliciting legitimate charitable donations, making it difficult to identify as terrorist financing.
Because the majority of crowdfunding activity is legitimate, 'this status can make it more difficult for law enforcement attempting to investigate potential (terrorist financing) cases with a crowdfunding and online fundraising nexus," the report said.

Indians have high confidence in Trump, US image declines globally: Pew study
Indians have higher confidence in United States President Donald Trump than those in several other countries surveyed by the Pew Research Centre, the think tank said in its findings published on Wednesday. This came even as favourable views about the US declined in 15 of the 24 countries where the survey was conducted. There was no significant change in the views about the US in six countries including India, the survey found. The views about the US had become more favourable in three countries: Israel, Nigeria and Turkey. Among the surveyed countries, the median level of confidence in Trump as a world leader was 34% and no confidence was 62%. However, in India, 52% of the respondents expressed confidence in Trump and 23% said that they were not confident, the Washington-based think tank found. Israel, Nigeria, Hungary and Kenya were the other countries where Trump enjoyed high confidence. In India, 54% of the Hindu respondents said that they were confident about Trump, as compared to 39% Muslims. India, Kenya and Nigeria were the only countries where at least half of the adult respondents said that they found Trump to be honest. Respondents in less than one-third of the surveyed countries said that 'honest' does not describe the US president. A median of 80% respondents – and majorities in almost every country surveyed – perceived Trump to be 'arrogant'. A median of 65% respondents viewed him as 'dangerous'. Across a range of characteristics, including 'able to understand complex problems', 'strong leader', 'well-qualified to be president', 'diplomatic' and 'honest', men tended to have more positive views about Trump's leadership qualities than women. In India and five other countries, the confidence in Trump to do the right thing in world affairs was higher than that in his predecessor Joe Biden. The confidence in Trump to handle major global issues such as Russia's war on Ukraine and climate change was low in most polled countries. However, the trust among Indian respondents on such matters was higher than the global average. Forty-five percent of the Indian respondents said that they had confidence in Trump on the matter of US immigration policies. The Trump administration has tightened immigration regulations. One thousand and eighty Indians have been deported from the US since January, when Trump's second term in office began. Forty-five percent of the respondents from India also said that they were confident about Trump dealing with the Russia-Ukraine war, 41% about US-China relations, 50% on global economic problems, 42% on Israel's war on Gaza and Tel Aviv's tensions with other West Asian countries, and 53% when it comes to climate change. More than 28,300 respondents in 24 countries participated in the survey conducted between January 8 and April 26. Fieldwork in all countries except Indonesia began after Trump assumed office on January 20, the think tank said. The surveyed countries were: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Newlywed woman hacks husband to death after he insists on consummating marriage
Just as more grisly details have started to emerge in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, another case of a woman killing her husband has come forth from Maharashtra's Sangli district where a newlywed woman allegedly hacked her husband to death for insisting on consummating the marriage. The 27-year-old woman, identified as Radhika, allegedly killed her husband using an axe just a fortnight after their wedding. The woman attacked her 53-year-old husband, Anil Lokhande, around 12.30 am on Wednesday after he insisted on consummating their 15-day-old marriage, police said. The woman has been arrested. The couple resided in Kupwad tehsil of Sangli district, a police official said. It was Lokhande's second marriage as his first wife had died of cancer, he said. Police said the woman was irked that Anil Lokhande had been constantly asking her to consummate their marriage whcih often led to a heated exchange between the two. On early Wednesday morning, in a fit of rage, Anil Lokhande's wife 'fatally attacked her husband with an axe when he was asleep in bed,' an official from Kupwad MIDC police station said. The woman was later arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he said, adding further probe was on into the case. Indore-based transport businessman Raja Raghuvanshi was allegedly murdered during his honeymoon trip to Meghalaya last month allegedly at the behest of his wife Sonam, as per police. The police suspect Sonam hatched a conspiracy to murder Raja in connivance with her alleged lover. Sonam and four others have been arrested so far in connection with the murder.

Rachakonda police bust interstate drug racket; seize Hashish oil worth Rs.1.2 cr
Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Special Operation Teams LB Nagar zone along with Abdullapurmet police apprehended two interstate drug peddlers on Wednesday. Police seized 20 kg of Hashish oil worth Rs 1.20 crore. The police arrested Pangi Keshava Rao alias Kesha (40) of Ramaraju Dist. AP and Jairam Khemundu (26) of Koraput district, Odisha and seized 20 kg Hashish, three mobile phones and cash of Rs 870. According to police, both the accused were friends who got involved in drug trafficking to earn easy money. They were found to be procuring Hashish Oil from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, transporting it via Hyderabad to supply buyers in Bengaluru. Hyderabad was being used as a transit route. Rachakonda police commissioner G Sudheer Babu said that the investigation revealed that Krishna of Alluri Sita Ramaraju Dist., AP who is currently absconding, is the main source and a childhood friend of Keshava introduced him to the illicit drug trade, with a promise of huge profits. Jairam later became acquainted with Krishna and joined the illegal activity. The accused Keshava had been previously arrested in a NDPS case by Anakapally Town Police, Andhra Pradesh. The accused persons were purchasing Hashish Oil at a low price and selling it to buyers in Bangalore for huge profits, nearly 10 times the procurement rate. It is learnt that approximately 35 to 40 kg of Ganja is used for making 1 kg of Hashish Oil. 'Two days prior to the arrest, a buyer from Bengaluru placed an order for 20 kg of Hash Oil to the accused. Accordingly, both the accused persons procured the 20 kg of Hashish Oil from Krishna at Hukumpeta, Alluri Sita Ramaraju District of Andhra Pradesh and reached the outskirts of Hyderabad to sell the Hashish Oil to a Bangalore-based party,' said Sudheer Babu.
