Kerala student's electrocution: Thevalakkara school manager dismissed

The Hindu26-07-2025
The government has dismissed the manager of Thevalakkara Boys High School, in Kollam district and entrusted the District Education Officer (DEO) with the school's administration. A Class VIII student had died owing to electrocution from an overhead power line inside the school on July 17, 2025.
Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty told mediapersons in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday (July 26, 2025) that a report of Director of General Education (DGE) Shanavas S. had found grave dereliction of duty on the part of the manager R. Thulasidharan Pillai.
Electrocution of school student: Kerala government orders inquiry
Earlier, the school headmistress Suja S. had been suspended from service after the Kollam Assistant Education Officer (AEO) visited the school and found lapses on her part in ensuring safety of the students.
Mr. Sivankutty said the government could take over the school's management as per Section 14 of the Kerala Education Act, 1958, if it appeared that the manager had neglected to perform his duties. The school management, particularly the manager, had failed to ensure student safety as part of school reopening arrangements. The death of Midhun from electrocution was prima facie the result of lapses on the part of the manager in discharging his responsibilities as per Kerala Education Rules (KER) Chapter III Section 9.
Accordingly, the manager had been issued a show-cause notice by the Kollam AEO as per KER Chapter III Section 7. His reply stated that there had been no deliberate lapses on his part in ensuring students' safety and that he had tried to discharge his duties properly. However, the manager's reply was found to be unsatisfactory and he was deemed unfit to hold the post of manager of Thevalakkara boys and girls high school. 'The Kollam DEO would act as the manager for the smooth administration of the school till a new appointment was made,' Mr. Sivankutty said.

Kerala man ends life over inability to fund son's engineering admission

A 47-year-old man took his own life in a forest in this district after becoming upset that he could not arrange money for his son's engineering college admission, police said here on Monday. The man, identified as VT Shijo, was found hanging in the Moongampara forest on Sunday evening.(Pexel) The man, identified as VT Shijo, was found hanging in the Moongampara forest on Sunday evening. His son had secured a place at an engineering college in Tamil Nadu, but the family was unable to pay the required fees. Relatives said Shijo had been facing severe financial difficulties. He had been expecting the 12 years' salary arrears due to his wife, an aided school teacher whose appointment was confirmed by a court earlier this year. She had started receiving her salary since February this year, but there had allegedly been a delay by DEO officials in clearing the arrears for the past 12 years. Police believe the family's financial struggles and the inability to fund the college admission led to the tragedy. His body has been handed over to the relatives after a post-mortem examination, they said. Note: Discussing suicides can be triggering for some. However, suicides are preventable. Nuns' bail based on merit, not external intervention, says Minister Sivankutty; V. Muraleedharan contrasts religious freedom in India with global Christian persecution

General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has said that the bail received by the two Keralite nuns, who were held in judicial remand in Chhattisgarh on 'fake allegations' of human trafficking and forced conversion, should not be misconstrued as the result of any external intervention. The court granted them bail after understanding the facts of the case. It was not due to assistance from anyone, as some falsely claim, he added. Mr. Sivankutty was inaugurating a civic reception organised in honour of Catholicos Mor Baselios Joseph I, head of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, at the St. Peter's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Simhasana Cathedral here on Sunday. While reiterating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's unwavering support to the Jacobite Church for all just causes, the Minister assured that instances of religious persecution would never occur in Kerala. 'No community, including Christians, will be subjected to such harassment here. But, how many other States in the country can claim to uphold such liberty for believers of various faiths? It is time people realise this reality.' 'Christians persecuted all over' However, former Union Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader V. Muraleedharan drew attention to the widespread persecution of Christians across the world, contrasting it with the relative religious freedom enjoyed in India. He cited instances of violence targeting Christians in countries such as Syria and Iraq to emphasise the gravity of the global situation. 'Christians are persecuted in many of such places. Priests from those regions could tell us what State-sponsored repression of minorities looks like,' he remarked. Mr. Muraleedharan also referred to a recent terror attack on a church at Damascus that left nearly 25 people dead, and the civil war that had engulfed Syria which forced even the Patriarch of Antioch and the supreme head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, Ignatius Aphrem II, to cut short his visit to India last year. 'In India, whether in Thiruvananthapuram or elsewhere, no one needs to fear getting shot at or dying in explosions while attending such programmes. The situation here is vastly different,' he asserted. Catholicos Mor Baselios Joseph I called for a lasting solution with the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Kuriakose Mar Theophilos, Resident Metropolitan, Malankara Syrian Orthodox Theological Seminary, presided over the function. Antony Raju, MLA, Metropolitan Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil of Syro Malabar Archeparchy of Changanassery, Bishop Antony Mar Silvanios of the Major Archiepiscopal Curia of Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, Bishop Mathews Mor Silvanus of the Thiruvananthapuram Diocese of Believers Eastern Church, former Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson and church vicar Alexander Thomas also spoke.
