Tele-MANAS receives over 65k calls in three years

Dharwad: Tele MANAS, a scheme launched by Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (DIMHANS) three years ago has succeeded in making thousands of people, cutting across age and gender barriers, come out of mental stress and lead a confident life.

It is a known fact that in recent years, people of all ages, from young children to the elderly, have been grappling with increasing levels of mental stress. Some, unable to cope, have even taken the extreme step of committing suicide.
Tele-MANAS has proven that with early intervention through empathetic counselling, reassurance, and guidance, mental health challenges can be effectively addressed.
In the last three years, over 65,000 people have called Tele MANAS and got their mental agonies dissolved through counselling.
A student who had failed in PUC exam had gone to railway station to commit suicide and as he was about to enter the tracks, he saw a board that said "Need help dealing with exam pressure?". He made a free call to Tele-MANAS, spoke with a counsellor, felt relieved, abandoned his suicide attempt, reappeared for the exams, and is now employed in a bank.
What is Tele-MANAS?
Post-Covid, a significant number of people in the country started experiencing mental health issues.
In response, the union govt launched Tele-MANAS in 2022. Each state has a Tele-MANAS centre, with the ones in Karnataka operating from NIMHANS (Bengaluru) and DIMHANS (Dharwad). Despite limited public awareness, both centres have collectively received over one lakh calls in just three years.
According to National Nodal Officer Ranganath Kulkarni, the free Tele-MANAS helpline is available 24x7 at 14416 or 1800-891-4416
At the Dharwad centre, a team of 20 trained counsellors work in shifts to attend to calls.

If a call is missed due to high traffic, a new waiting system ensures that the caller is reconnected soon after.
Anyone having mental stress due to various reasons can contact this helpline and receive help.
15% of cases severe
Analysis of past calls shows that most calls come during night hours. About 85% of callers seek help for issues like mental health, education, personal life (in-law disputes, hatred etc), and sexual problems.
Around 15% of the cases are severe, including addiction or suicidal tendencies. In such serious cases, calls are referred to psychiatrists, who may conduct video consultations or call the person to DIMHANS for in-person care.
All caller information is kept strictly confidential.
DIMHANS director Arun Kumar said that with over 60,000 calls handled in the past three years, the Tele-MANAS initiative has proven highly successful in helping people manage stress. Students, in particular, are encouraged to make use of this service to shape their academic futures. The core message of the programme-"There is a solution to every problem. No one needs to choose suicide or any extreme measure—live a better, stress-free life".

Nagpur: In a major step toward creating safer and more inclusive schools for children with epilepsy, AIIMS, Nagpur, has launched a first-of-its-kind mobile application — Tele-ESSI — that helps teachers and parents identify and manage seizures through simple, animated learning tools. The app is already making a difference by creating awareness among teachers who were earlier unsure or fearful of what to do when a child has a seizure. With this easy-to-use tool, teachers are being trained to respond calmly instead of panicking, which could bring a major shift in how children with epilepsy are supported in schools. "We want every teacher to be prepared to handle the situation. Through this app, we are spreading knowledge that will empower schools, reduce fear, and change the lives of children living with epilepsy," said Dr Prashant Joshi, executive director of AIIMS, Nagpur, while launching the app. The app is part of a national project called Tele-ESSI (Tele-school Health-led Epilepsy Smart Schools in India), led by AIIMS, Nagpur, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The goal is to equip at least one staff member in every school with practical skills to manage seizure situations confidently. The app is available in regional languages so that it can be used even in rural and remote areas by teachers, parents, school staff, and primary healthcare workers. "This app simplifies medical knowledge through everyday language. It breaks the fear barrier and gives confidence to teachers and parents to act in time, without panic," said Dr Shikha Jain, paediatric neurologist and principal investigator of the project. "We hope this will reduce the number of missed school days, help avoid injuries during seizures, and stop the social stigma children with epilepsy often face," she added. Epilepsy affects nearly 5 million children in India, but many go undiagnosed or untreated. Schools are where children spend most of their time, but teachers often lack the training to deal with seizures, leading to fear, confusion, and misinformation. With the Tele-ESSI app, AIIMS, Nagpur, wants to ensure that no child is left behind due to fear or lack of awareness. Teachers using the app are already learning how to give seizure first aid, something that can save lives and bring peace of mind to parents. The initiative is backed by a dedicated team including Dr Sujiv Akkilagunta, Dr Urmila Dahake, and Dr Prasenjit Patil, who helped organise the launch and training programmes. As per the World Health Organization, there should be 1.7 psychiatrists per 100,000 population. However, the current ratio in India is only about 0.75 psychiatrists per 100,000 people, as per the Indian Journal of Psychiatry. The government's Tele-MANAS helpline, launched in 2022, has received more than 2.38 million calls so far, offering support in 20 Indian languages. ELEMENT 3 Shortage of psychiatry seats The country has 1,300 MD (Psychiatry) seats across medical colleges for a population of 1.43 billion. While the number has increased 138% to 74,306 from 31,185 before 2014, mental health specialisations continue to institutes are offering Clinical Psychology there are 13,86,150 registered allopathic doctors in the country. ELEMENT 4 Clinical psychologists and nurses As per data from the Rehabilitation Council of India, there are only 4,309 clinical psychologists and 801 rehabilitation social workers registered in India. The WHO recommends 0.7 social workers per 100,000 population. In 2024-25, the National Medical Council started a BSc Clinical Psychology (Hons.) course, approving 19 universities to increase manpower in clinical psychology. Dharwad: Observing Addiction-free Day should serve not merely as a symbolic gesture but as a strong commitment to societal transformation, especially in protecting youth from the dangers of addiction, said deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu. Inaugurating a Addiction-free Day programme organised at DIMHANS here to mark the birth anniversary of Mahant Shivayogi Swami, the DC highlighted the evolving nature of addiction. "Substances like tobacco, alcohol, narcotic and psychotropic drugs are commonly associated with addiction, but today the nature of addiction has changed. Digital addictions like online gaming and gambling are ensnaring youth. These addictions, like termites, gradually erode not just the individual, but also their families and ultimately, society," she stated. She stressed the need to preserve mental, physical and emotional well-being, calling them the most valuable assets of a healthy individual. Karnatak Bal Vikas Academy chairman Sangamesh Babaleshwar said, "When even one member of a family becomes addicted, it disrupts peace, causes financial strain, fuels domestic violence, and leads to broken relationships," he said. Murugha Mutt pontiff Mallikarjun Swami paid tribute to Mahanta Shivayogi Swami, known as the "walking God", who championed the philosophy of Trividha Dasoha.
