Stephen Holt's lone field goal lifts Ginebra to 18-point comeback vs. SMB in semis
The veteran guard buried a clutch triple — his first and lone field goal of the match — to give the Gin Kings a 70-69 lead late in the fourth after being down by as much as 18 points in the first half.
CJ Perez then continued his brilliance by completing a layup to regain a San Miguel lead, before Troy Rosario calmly sank a pair of free throws for another one-point Ginebra lead, 72-71, with 1:21 left in the game.
San Miguel had an opportunity to make another desperate comeback after Jamie Malonzo missed two charities but Perez could not secure the rebound.
Holt then sealed it with a split from the stripe as Ginebra drew first blood in the best-of-seven series.
"We saw that June Mar [Fajardo] was getting treatment on the sidelines, we took advantage of the time that he was absent on the floor to get back in the game," Ginebra head coach Tim Cone said.
"When he's on the floor, it's really tough and the good news is we just battled tonight. We didn't play great, we didn't shoot great, we didn't really defend that great."
Japeth Aguilar was also huge for Ginebra, scoring seven points as part of a 15-5 run that allowed Ginebra to turn a 55-41 deficit to just 60-56 advantage heading to the payoff period.
The seasoned big man then came up big early in the fourth, knocking down two layups to further cut the gap to 69-67 before Holt took over to seal the win.
Aguilar top-scored with 18 points alongside nine rebounds, two assists, and a block while Scottie Thompson and Malonzo chipped in 16 and 14 markers apiece.
Holt, who was limited to 1-of-6 from the field, finished with four important points together with seven rebounds, and four dimes.

Cheers! San Miguel's Tiongson, Cahilig, Rosales, Calma celebrate first PBA title
It took them a while, but finally, they can call themselves PBA champions. Last Friday, Juami Tiongson, Andreas Cahilig, Kris Rosales, and JM Calma relished their first title as the San Miguel Beermen defeated TNT in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals. Tiongson, Cahilig, and Rosales have been in the PBA for quite a while. Tiongson was drafted in 2014, while Rosales made his PBA debut in 2016. Cahilig, meanwhile, entered the league in 2017. "It means more to me. Obviously, with everything I went through in my career. Baka nung nag-start ang career ko, nawala ako sa PBA," Tiongson said. "I made it back and glory to God, and hopefully, win more championships," he added. ? Cahilig, who was also Tiongson's teammate back in Terrafirma, echoed the same sentiment. "It feels very good, I'm very happy. It's been a hard couple of years but it finally paid out," he said. Although Cahilig was able to play in two games only because of his hyperextended knee, the Filipino-Swedish big man said he is now more motivated after winning his first title. "I'm very hungry to play in the finals again," he added. "It's been like 10 years, four or five teams, so this one means a lot to me," Rosales said. "This is one of my goals in my career and I'm able to achieve it with San Miguel." "There's a lot of stuff that I did behind the scenes to get to this point and for me to get this, it really means a lot," Rosales said, especially after revealing he almost retired during the pandemic. "It's really dear to my heart and hopefully I can get some more." ? Kris Rosales, also a first time champion @gmasportsph — JK Carandang (@jk_carandang) July 25, 2025 Calma, while relatively new in the league being drafted in 2022, said this is the first trophy in his career. "Unang-una, sobrang saya, di mo ma-express 'yung feeling, sobrang sarap," the former San Sebastian big man said. "First time ko rin mag-champion sa career ko. Thank you sa San Miguel, binigyan ako ng opportunity para mag-champion." ? Brownlee, Thompson shocked by LA Tenorio's move to Magnolia
For the longest time, LA Tenorio stood as one of Barangay Ginebra's icons in the PBA. His sudden move to take over as Magnolia head coach surprised not only the fans, but also longtime teammates like Justin Brownlee and Scottie Thompson. The trio played together — and won multiple titles — for several PBA seasons, a stretch that also saw them at the heart of the iconic Manila Clasico rivalry between Ginebra and Magnolia. But next season, they will find themselves on opposite sides of the court with Tenorio now the lead shot-caller for the Hotshots. "Actually, I was totally shocked nung narinig ko. 'Di ko alam eh, kasi 'yung pag transition ko sa PBA, si Kuya LA 'yung nag guide sa akin," Thompson, who had been teammates with Tenorio ever since he was drafted back in 2015, said. "For sure, 'di kami sanay na nandoon siya sa kabila. But gano'n talaga 'yung buhay dito sa PBA, we just have to keep on moving forward." Resident Ginebra import Justin Brownlee was also stunned, admitting he was surprised to learn that Tenorio, whom he considered a 'second coach' on the court, was taking over for their biggest rival. "I just heard that and I can't believe that, man. But man, like what I told earlier when I was told of the news, to be honest, my nine years in the Philippines playing for Ginebra, I feel like LA has been my second coach on the floor with obviously, Tim (Cone) and the coaching staff," Brownlee said. "Obviously, Magnolia is Ginebra's biggest rival and yeah, I can't wait to see what Manila Clasico is gonna be like, especially with LA now on the other side." —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Calvin Oftana doubtful for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup
Calvin Oftana's health status puts his availability for Gilas Pilipinas in doubt ahead of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. National team head coach Tim Cone revealed on Monday that Oftana is uncertain to suit up after the sharpshooter sustained injuries during TNT's finals series against San Miguel in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup. Oftana hurt both of his ankles in the grueling finals clash as the Tropang 5G eventually fell to the Beermen in six games. "We're not sure about Calvin. The medical reports are that he might be out a little bit longer," Cone said following Gilas' 103-98 win over the Macau Black Bears in a friendly encounter at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. "We were given a medical report from his camp so we're not sure if he's going to be available for the whole tournament." Cone, though, isn't worried about the manpower shortage with his trusted wards in Troy Rosario and RJ Abarrientos ready to step in whenever necessary. "We're gonna try to address that today or tomorrow and we got Troy and RJ in the wings to step in if necessary," Cone added. Cone also added that June Mar Fajardo, who sat out the send-off showdown against Macau, will take another three-day off before rejoining physical activities once they land in Jeddah, where they will figure in another friendly game against Jordan before the Asia Cup proper. "But June Mar, we expect him to start practicing when we land in Jeddah," Cone shared. "He changes the game for us, we have to play a different way with June Mar on the floor and that's the only concern because we haven't had practice time with him. We'll see what's going on with him." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
