FUN weekend habits might be putting our health at risk by triggering a condition that also causes terrible snoring, research suggests.
Scientists from Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, reckon loads of us have a newly discovered condition called 'social apnoea'.
It is a version of sleep apnoea, which causes heavy snoring and disrupted breathing in the night, brought on by Friday and Saturday revelling.
They suggest it is triggered by spending our weekends drinking alcohol, smoking and having lie-ins.
As many as 10million Brits are thought to suffer typical sleep apnoea, raising their risk of depression, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease and dementia.
Now even more might have it only at the weekend after letting loose.
Experts studied data from mattress sensors given to 70,000 people worldwide.
Men affected worse than women
They found sleep apnoea was 18 per cent more likely on Saturdays than Wednesdays.
The likelihood was 21 per cent higher in men compared to nine per cent higher for women.
Having a lie-in to catch up on lost sleep further boosted the risk by up to 47 per cent.
The results mean people, and especially men, are significantly more likely to snore badly on the weekends.
Writing in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, the study authors said: 'A variety of factors can influence obstructive sleep apnoea severity, many of which exhibit a strong day-of-week effect.

'An increase in alcohol consumption and smoking has been documented over weekends.
'This is consistent with our finding that the social apnoea effect is particularly intensified in men and younger individuals, groups with higher alcohol consumption and smoking behaviours.'
Lead author Dr Lucia Pinilla added: 'Sleep apnoea is already a major public health issue but our findings suggest its true impact may be underestimated.
'Most clinical diagnostic testing is done on a single weeknight, missing the weekend effect we're now calling social apnoea.'
The NHS says sleep apnoea can leave people feeling very tired during the day, causing mood swings, trouble concentrating and even car crashes.
It recommends sufferers go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, lose weight if they are overweight, exercise regularly and sleep on their side.
Avoiding smoking, drinking and sleeping pills can also help, it adds.

Sleep apnoea is - as you might expect - a sleep condition, but it can cause serious health implications.
It causes breathing to repeatedly stop and re-start when you're asleep.
There are lots different symptoms linked to sleep apnoea but some of the most obvious are loud snoring and abrupt awakenings followed by gasping and choking.
Night time sweating, morning headaches, high blood pressure and a decreased libido are also huge tell-tale signs.
Symptoms of sleep apnoea mainly happen while you sleep.

Climate change drove record levels of global humidity in 2024, posing a rising risk to people's health, a new report has warned. The latest 'State of the Climate' report published by the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) found 2024 set new records for levels of water vapour in the atmosphere and the number of humid days. Climate change is driving the increased humidity, as a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture. And when combined with rising temperatures – with 2024 recording record heat globally – the increase in hot, humid conditions is bringing more people into 'potentially life-threatening situations,' experts have warned. People find it harder to cool down in hot and humid conditions because sweating is less effective than in dry heat, and continued physical activity during high humid heat can lead to serious health issues, the experts warn. Dr Kate Willett of the Met Office, who is one of the report's editors, said: 'Human health can be seriously affected by high heat and humidity. 'Such a dramatic increase in the occurrence of these humid heat events is bringing more societies into challenging, potentially life-threatening, situations. 'Our report found that it's not just high temperatures that people are having to contend with, it's also humidity; with the frequency of high humid heat days at a record level, and intensity of those days at the second-highest level in the record, only fractionally cooler than 2023.' The State of the Climate report showed the amount of water in the atmosphere hit record levels over both land and ocean, with almost 90% of the atmosphere wetter than the 1991-2020 average. And the global average number of high humid heat days reached a record of 35.6 days more than normal in 2024, scientists said. The report also highlights last year was the hottest year on record globally, and the 10th consecutive year that was more than 1C above pre-industrial levels, while the last 10 years have been the hottest 10 years on record. In 2024, sea surface temperatures were at their highest in records dating back 171 years, and marine heatwaves were observed over more than nine tenths (91%) of the world's oceans. All 58 reference glaciers lost more ice than they gained in 2024, in only the second year this has happened, while Colombia's Conejeras glacier was declared extinct, and all of Venezuela's glaciers have officially disappeared. It was the wettest year for extreme rainfall on record, while there was also no let up in the increase in climate-warming pollution, with the main gases carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide all hitting new highs in the atmosphere, the study found. Professor Stephen Belcher, Met Office chief scientist, said: 'The changes to global climate highlighted in the BAMS State of the Climate report indicates the need for deep, rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels in order to limit warming as much as possible, alongside scaled up adaptation action to protect societies and nature already exposed to impacts from record breaking extremes.'

Scientists say that anxiety levels among U.S. adults appear to have stayed steady during that period, with new research challenging the belief that there was a widespread spike in psychological distress. Previous research had found a 25 percent increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression, which the World Health Organization said was linked to feelings of loneliness and fear of infection during the pandemic. The new research, which surveyed nearly 100,000 U.S. adults between 2011 and 2022, found that there was no prolonged spike in anxiety levels for younger or older adults. 'Our results might suggest that the mental health of U.S. adults is more resilient than public perception suggests, given the many news headlines about the U.S. currently experiencing a 'mental health crisis,'' Noah French, a researcher at University of Virginia and an author of the new study, explained in a statement. The pandemic was cited by Biden administration officials as worsening America's mental health crisis in 2023, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says nearly one in four U.S. adults report having a mental illness. Some 38 percent more people had been in mental health care since the onset of the pandemic, researchers said. The pandemic disproportionately affected the mental health of younger adults, WHO has reported. The isolating impact of school closures also resulted in anxious kids who were academically behind their peers, according to an analysis in The New York Times, and dozens of related studies. However, the new study found that while those aged 18-25 showed significantly stronger symptoms of anxiety compared to older adults during the pandemic, young adults' anxiety levels did not increase from 2011 to 2022 overall. The reasons behind these observations in younger and older adults are unclear. Other surveys have found that Americans are feeling more anxious in general. Polling data from last year found that 43 percent of U.S. adults felt more anxious than they did the previous year and in 2022, according to the American Psychiatric Association. This uptick in American anxiety stems from current events, the economy, and gun violence, the association said. And of the more than 2,200 adults surveyed, 63 percent said they were anxious about their health. It's also possible that worsening mental health was the reason Americans drank more alcohol during the pandemic, according to doctors. One study suggested that mothers with young children drank 300 percent more alcohol than they did before Covid. French said that more research is needed to fully understand what happened, and cautioned against drawing firm conclusions on anxiety levels from his findings. For one, participants skewed younger, were more educated, and had all signed up to answer the questions. That means that they might not be entirely representative of the average American. 'One of my biggest personal takeaways from this project is that there is surprisingly little high-quality research tracking the mental health of entire populations over time,' French said. 'We need a lot more research in this space, and I will forever be skeptical of headlines that make strong claims about a certain mental health condition being 'on the rise.''

Rebecca, now 12, from Glasgow has been named on the first-ever Time magazine Girls of the Year list alongside nine other girls from around the came up with the idea of a solar-powered backpack with an electric blanket after becoming worried about homeless people sleeping on the streets during winter. "I'm honoured by the fact they wanted to include me on their Girls of the Year list", Rebecca said, "and I hope other kids see it and decide to do their part in helping people". Rebecca thought up of the idea at an engineering club, she then came top in the UK Primary Engineer competition, where more than 70,000 pupils entered ideas aimed around addressing a social engineering company then turned the design into reality, with 30 of the blankets given to a homeless shelter in Glasgow, with plans to make more. US news magazine, Time, is best known for its Person of the Year feature which it has run since the 1920s. In 2023, Taylor Swift was named Person of the Year, while in 2024 it was Donald Trump. The Time 100 list, which lists 100 influential people around the world and Women of the Year are also well-known features. This is the first Girls of the Year list and honours "10 extraordinary young leaders" between the ages of 12 and 17. The list also includes15-year-old French singer Zoé Clauzure, who won the 2023 Junior Eurovision Song Contest with an anti-bullying song and 15-year-old skateboarder Coco Yoshizawa from Japan, who won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris of the honoured children and young people also appear on a digital cover of the famous magazine, as Lego mini-figures.
