Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday recalled Maharashtra's 'glorious history and the courage of its people'. The PM, whose message came on the occasion of Maharashtra Day, said the natives of the state have always played a vital role in India's development. He called the western state a 'strong pillar of progress" that remains connected to its roots.
'Maharashtra Day greetings to the people of the state, which has always played a vital role in India's development. When one thinks of Maharashtra, its glorious history and the courage of the people come to our mind. The state remains a strong pillar of progress and at the same time has remained connected to its roots. My best wishes for the state's progress," PM Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Maharashtra Day, celebrated on May 1, is a public holiday commemorating the Marathi-speaking community's historic struggle for unification. The movement, which began in the mid-20th century, played a significant role in the establishment of Maharashtra in 1960. This achievement resulted from their persistent efforts, including protests and sacrifices.
The day is also known as Maharashtra Din, or Maharashtra Diwas. It shares its statehood day with Gujarat. The common statehood of Maharashtra and Gujarat had its origin in the reorganisation of Indian states along linguistic lines.

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday commended the seven multi-party delegations for effectively representing India's stance in global capitals following Operation Sindoor , a decisive strike against terrorist hubs in Pakistan and PoK. "Met members of various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India's commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We're all proud of the manner in which they put forward India's voice," PM said on X. Over 50 representatives from the delegations, who visited 33 foreign capitals and the EU, called on Modi to share their experiences. It was a good, lively, informal meeting," Tharoor said, adding that MPs shared insights and suggested such visits be made a regular practice, which the PM seemed to support. The delegations - comprising current and former MPs and ex-diplomats - conveyed India's firm stand against Pakistan-linked terrorism and its commitment to global peace. EAM S Jaishankar had earlier praised the delegations for highlighting India's position.

Newark airport videos: Delhi formally takes up matter with US Embassy
The Ministry of External Affairs has formally raised the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi in the wake of social media videos purportedly showing an Indian national being handcuffed and pinned to the ground at the Newark airport. The Indian Consulate in New York has also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details of the incident, as per sources. Posted on X by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, the videos and photographs showed an unidentified young man being restrained by officers from the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD), the agency responsible for law enforcement across major transport hubs in New York and New Jersey Sunday night. Jain had tagged the Indian Embassy in Washington DC and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his series of posts. During a call from The Indian Express to Port Authority Police Department at Newark International Airport, an officer said that 'the PAPD doesn't get involved in deportations'. 'The Ministry has formally raised the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi. Our Embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York have also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details,' sources in the Ministry said. 'We have so far have not received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which he was restrained, the flight he had to board or boarded and his final destination,' sources said, adding that the ministry will continue to follow up on the matter. There is still no information if the person has left Newark or has arrived in India, as per those aware of the matter.

DEHRADUN: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the United Nations Security Council 's (UNSC) decision to appoint Pakistan as vice-chair of its anti-terror panel was like "asking the cat to guard milk". The UN decision is not only surprising but also raises a question mark over the seriousness of the global body in the fight against terrorism, he said. Calling upon the global community and organisations, such as the United Nations, to think on issues like terrorism more seriously, he said, "Only when we are free from terrorism, will we be able to move towards the goal of global peace, progress and prosperity." Singh, addressing a dialogue on 'national security & terrorism', said, "India and Pakistan gained independence at the same time. Today, while India is recognised as the 'mother of democracy', Pakistan has emerged as the 'father of global terrorism'." Addressing a dialogue on 'National Security & Terrorism', here, he described Operation Sindoor as the biggest action taken against terrorism in Indian history, and that it was carried out in response to the terror attack on innocents in Pahalgam. He advised Pakistan to seek India's help if it is unable to take action against terrorism on its soil.
