Assam Rifles seizes Meth tablets worth Rs 112.40 crore in Mizoram

Aizawl, Jul 12 (PTI) Assam Rifles personnel seized a huge consignment of Meth tablets worth Rs 112.40 crore from Mizoram Champhai district near the Myanmar border, a statement issued by the paramilitary force said on Saturday.
The two individuals jumped into the Tiau river, which flows along the Indo-Myanmar border, and escaped to Myanmar, it said.
The statement said that the seized Meth tablets worth Rs 112.40 crore were believed to be distributed in Champhai town.
Methamphetamines are stimulants, a type of drug that lets people stay awake and do continuous activity with less need for sleep.
The seized consignment was handed over to Mizoram Police in Zokhawthar for further investigation and legal proceedings, the statement added. PTI COR RG

23 Naxalites surrender in Chhattisgarh
As many as 23 hardcore Naxalites, including three couples, carrying a cumulative bounty of Rs 1.18 crore, surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Saturday, a senior police official said. The surrendered Naxalites include 11 senior cadres, most of them active in the Peoples' Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) battalion no.1, which is considered the strongest military formation of Maoists, the official said. They turned themselves in before senior police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials, citing their disappointment with 'hollow' Maoist ideology, atrocities committed by Naxalites on innocent tribals and growing internal differences within the banned outfit, Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan said. He said there were nine women among surrendered cadres. The official said Lokesh alias Podiam Bhima (35), Ramesh alias Kalmu Kesa (23), Kawasi Masa (35), Madkam Hunga (23), Nuppo Gangi (28), Punem Deve (30), Paraski Pandey (22), Madvi Joga (20), Nuppo Lachchu (25), Podiam Sukhram (24) and Dudhi Bheema carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh each. 'Lokesh was a divisional committee member, and eight others were members of the PLGA battalion no.1 formation of Maoists. The development shows that this battalion is weakening, and its members have been continuously quitting Naxalism due to intensified anti-Naxal operations being carried out by security forces on the Sukma-Bijapur inter-district border,' Chavan said. Four other cadres carried a bounty of Rs 5 lakh each, one cadre Rs 3 lakh and seven cadres Rs 1 lakh each, he said. The official said some of the surrendered Naxalities were active in the Aamdai, Jagargunda and Kerlapal area committees of Maoists. All the surrendered Naxalites were provided assistance of Rs 50,000 each and will be further rehabilitated as per the government's policy, he added.

Ambulance driver's tip-off helps police crack murder case in Karnataka
BENGALURU: An alert ambulance driver tipped off the police when a group of four men were trying to disappear with the body of a 36-year-old construction labourer whom they had murdered. The police have arrested the accused who have been identified as Ramkaran, Shivaji, Obala Reddy and Rama Mohana Reddy. The victim was identified as Chintu Sah, 36, a resident of Kaggadasapura, and a native of Bihar. Chintu was a construction labourer and was beaten to death by his co-workers, Ramkaran and Shivaji, on Tuesday around 4 pm over Rs 300 the victim had borrowed from the accused. They then informed Obala Reddy, the mason, and Rama Mohana Reddy, the building owner, about the murder. Fearing arrest, the four hatched a plot the whole night. On Wednesday morning around 6.30 am, Obala Reddy called the victim's brother, Mahadev Kumar, 31, residing near KR Market and told him to come near the KR Puram Government Hospital as his brother was serious. When Kumar went near the hospital, they informed him about his brother's death but did not tell him the cause of the death. The accused had hired an ambulance and forced Kumar to take his brother's body to Bihar. Suspecting foul play, the ambulance driver refused to take the body without the postmortem being done since there were injury marks on the body. The driver also informed the police. The accused then escaped from the spot. The police who rushed to the spot sent the body for postmortem and made Kumar file a complaint. 'The murder was committed by Ramkaran and Shivaji. The building owner and the mason are booked for trying to dispose of the evidence to screen the offenders. The body was handed over to Kumar after the postmortem. The final rites were conducted at a cemetery,' said an officer. A case of murder and causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offenders have been registered against the four accused.

LUCKNOW: CM Yogi Adityanath on Saturday termed illegal religious conversions a calculated conspiracy to undermine the nation's identity and destroy social fabric, asserting that Uttar Pradesh government was taking firm action to curb it. Yogi referred to the recent case of Balrampur where a large-scale illegal conversion racket backed by foreign funding was unearthed. The CM revealed that the suspicious transactions of over Rs 100 crore was found across 40 accounts with pre-determined 'rates' for conversion. He termed it a grave threat to economic and social security of the state and the nation. 'Some forces are deliberately trying to alter the fundamental character of the country through unlawful conversions. This is an attack on social cohesion and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances,' the CM said while addressing the flagging-off ceremony of Shri Tegh Bahadur Sandesh Yatra dedicated to 350th Shaheedi Varsh of the Sikh Guru. Yogi underlined that marginalised communities, particularly Scheduled Castes, were being lured and coerced into changing their religion. He emphasised that such acts were against the spirit of the Constitution and the principle of social equality. The Yatra, which commenced from Lucknow, will pass through Kanpur, Etawah, and Agra before culminating at Chandni Chowk and the historic Sheeshganj Gurudwara in Delhi—the site of Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom.
