23 Naxalites surrender in Chhattisgarh
The surrendered Naxalites include 11 senior cadres, most of them active in the Peoples' Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) battalion no.1, which is considered the strongest military formation of Maoists, the official said.
They turned themselves in before senior police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials, citing their disappointment with 'hollow' Maoist ideology, atrocities committed by Naxalites on innocent tribals and growing internal differences within the banned outfit, Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan said.
He said there were nine women among surrendered cadres. The official said Lokesh alias Podiam Bhima (35), Ramesh alias Kalmu Kesa (23), Kawasi Masa (35), Madkam Hunga (23), Nuppo Gangi (28), Punem Deve (30), Paraski Pandey (22), Madvi Joga (20), Nuppo Lachchu (25), Podiam Sukhram (24) and Dudhi Bheema carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh each.
'Lokesh was a divisional committee member, and eight others were members of the PLGA battalion no.1 formation of Maoists. The development shows that this battalion is weakening, and its members have been continuously quitting Naxalism due to intensified anti-Naxal operations being carried out by security forces on the Sukma-Bijapur inter-district border,' Chavan said.
Four other cadres carried a bounty of Rs 5 lakh each, one cadre Rs 3 lakh and seven cadres Rs 1 lakh each, he said.
The official said some of the surrendered Naxalities were active in the Aamdai, Jagargunda and Kerlapal area committees of Maoists. All the surrendered Naxalites were provided assistance of Rs 50,000 each and will be further rehabilitated as per the government's policy, he added.

New Delhi: In a bid to fix its flailing public transport, the Delhi government has kicked off what it calls a comprehensive overhaul of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta today laid out the blueprint for route rationalisation, universal smart cards, modernised terminals, and commuter-friendly bus shelters. Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, Chief Secretary, Transport Commissioner, and senior officials were present. The message from the top was clear - the system is broken, and the fix won't be cosmetic. "We've inherited a transport system in disrepair, Rs 60,000 crore in losses, but we're prepared to fix it," Ms Gupta said. "Delhi deserves a transit system that's modern, reliable, and accessible to all," she added. Smart Cards to Work Across DTC, Metro, RRTS The government plans to roll out a universal smart card usable on DTC buses, Delhi Metro, and the upcoming Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). Special 'Pink Cards' will offer free travel for women and transgender passengers on DTC buses and banks have been brought in for phased distribution. Officials hope the move will streamline ticketing and increase ridership across the network, which continues to suffer from fragmented services. IIT Delhi to Redraw Bus Routes In partnership with IIT Delhi, the government will rationalise DTC routes, many untouched for decades. The first pilot will begin in East Delhi's trans-Yamuna region, where connectivity remains a chronic issue. "Even with 4,800 electric buses, our routes haven't caught up with urban growth," Ms Gupta noted. Rusting Shelters to Get Smart Makeover Of Delhi's 4,627 bus queue shelters, less than half are currently functional. The government plans a citywide revamp with smart features - Real-time information screens, solar power, and weather protection, executed via a public-private partnership. Officials say the new shelters will borrow from transit models across India and abroad, tailored to Delhi's unique needs. ISBTs To Be Turned Into 'Airport-Like' Hubs The three major inter-state bus terminals - Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, and Sarai Kale Khan - are also slated for a complete revamp. Plans include digital signage, waiting lounges, and improved amenities. While no specific timelines were given, officials said work would begin "within weeks." Electric Bus Fleet Spurs Depot Upgrades With 660 mini electric buses (DEVI) and 1,800 large e-buses now in service, the government is investing in charging infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and support systems at DTC depots. "DEVI buses have become lifelines in crowded areas, bridging last-mile gaps," said Dr Singh. "We're upgrading depots and terminals to match the growing EV fleet's needs for both drivers and commuters," he added. For now, it's a reform plan heavy on intent. The real test will be execution.

Jal Jeevan Mission under fire: Accusing dy CM Sao of providing inaccurate info, Oppn MLAs walk out
Raipur: A fiery debate erupted in the Chhattisgarh Assembly on Tuesday regarding the progress and expenditure of the Jal Jeevan Mission, with the opposition alleging significant discrepancies in the reported figures and a slow pace of work under the current govt. The discussion began with a question from former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel seeking details on the expenditure and targets under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Deputy chief minister, who also heads the public works department, Arun Sao responded, providing district-wise expenditure details and stating that 31,16,398 households so far received tap water connections. Baghel then raised concerns, highlighting a drastic reduction in expenditure in several districts during the 2024-25 financial year compared to the previous two years. He pointed out that Raipur, Mungeli, Rajnandgaon, Janjgir, Jashpur, and Balrampur districts saw significantly lower spending. For example, Janjgir, which spent Rs 320 crore in 2023-24 and Rs 338 crore in 2022-23, only spent Rs 79 crore in 2024-25. Similarly, Koriya spent only Rs 43 crore in 2024-25, compared to Rs 135 crore earlier. Baghel also questioned the achievement of targets for tap connections, alleging severe shortfalls. The deputy chief minister clarified the expenditure figures, stating that Rs 4,203 crore was spent in 2022-23 (16% of the total project cost), Rs 5,474 crore in 2023-24 (20%), and Rs 3,522 crore in 2024-25 (14%). He added that till July 1, 2025, a total of Rs 15,045 crore, or approximately 57% of the project cost, was spent, and 31 lakh households are receiving tap water. He acknowledged that the project, originally slated for completion in 2024, was not completed on time. Sao attributed the varying performance across districts to the availability of resources and the pace of work. Sao further stated that the previous govt's 'e-mission' portal recorded 36 lakh tap connections by Dec 2023 for the purpose of showing progress, but a verification in June 2024 revealed that only 21 lakh households were actually receiving water. He accused the previous govt of merely installing connections and taps without ensuring water supply. He added that the current govt provided an additional 12,316 borewells to ensure water supply, and 3,836 villages now have complete tap water access. Out of approximately 29,000 projects, 5,017 projects are fully functional. Baghel further cornered the deputy chief minister, questioning the pace of work by the current govt. He said that based on the deputy chief minister's own figures, the current govt only provided 10 lakh connections in two years since taking office, while the previous govt provided 21 lakh connections. He asked for clarification on whether the 21 lakh figure truly represented households receiving water or if it was merely an inflated statistic. Other opposition MLAs, including Dilip Lahariya and Yashodamani Verma, interjected, claiming that the ground reality was different and that water was not reaching many villages. They alleged that the figures presented were false. Leader of Opposition Charan Das Mahant also joined in on the debate, highlighting that the current govt, in its 20-month tenure, completed only 7% of the Jal Jeevan Mission work, while the previous govt completed 73% by Dec 2023. . The deputy chief minister reiterated that the 21 lakh figure was from June 2024, which includes the work done in the first six months of the current govt's tenure. He stated that the govt gave approximately 10 lakh water connections with actual water supply since taking office. Unsatisfied with the deputy chief minister's response, the opposition MLAs, led by Baghel, staged a walkout.

Hyderabad: The staggering scale of disproportionate assets allegedly accumulated by a former engineer-in-chief of the Telangana Irrigation Department has come out in the open following raids at 11 locations, including his Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad. A villa in Kondapur, four high-end flats in posh areas of Hyderabad like Banjara Hills and Begumpet, two commercial buildings, 11 acres of agricultural land, and a luxurious Mercedes-Benz are just a fraction of the staggering assets unearthed during the raids on the properties of Muralidhar Rao. The raids were conducted across Hyderabad, Karimnagar, and Zaheerabad as part of a disproportionate assets (DA) case on Tuesday. Mr Rao's inventory of residential assets includes a sprawling villa in Kondapur, a flat in Banjara Hills, another in Yousufguda, a flat in Begumpet, and one in Kokapet, all of which are in and around Hyderabad. He also owns an apartment in Kodad and an under-construction building in Warangal. Among the commercial properties and land holdings were a building in Karimnagar and another in Hyderabad, alongside 11 acres of agricultural land, and 6,500 square yards of prime open plots in Mokila, Hyderabad. Three four-wheelers, including a high-end Mercedes-Benz and significant quantities of gold ornaments. Other assets include substantial bank deposits and even a 2 KW solar power project in Zaheerabad. Rao was taken into custody from his Banjara Hills residence following the searches. He has been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act and has been sent to judicial custody. Officials said preliminary evidence strongly indicates that the unearthed assets are grossly disproportionate to his known and legitimate sources of income. The probe is focused on alleged irregularities tied to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, the flagship initiative of the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS government). Rao's arrest marks the second high-profile apprehension of a senior irrigation department official in a disproportionate assets case. Last month, Nune Sridhar, an executive engineer involved in the Kaleshwaram project, was also arrested and accused of having disproportionate assets worth Rs 60 crore.
