BNP-M announces new round of rallies across Balochistan

Express Tribune19-04-2025
Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) Chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal has announced upcoming rallies in Khuzdar on April 23, Gwadar on April 25, Noshki on April 27, and a major public gathering in Quetta on May 2.
He said that when courts are unable to provide justice, people often feel compelled to raise their voices, as the party announced a new round of protest rallies following its 20-day sit-in in Lakpass.
Mengal was speaking at a press conference at the BNP-M headquarters in Quetta on Friday, accompanied by former Member of National Assembly (MNA) Agha Hasan Baloch, Advocate Sajid Tarin, and other senior leaders. The meeting reviewed the outcomes of the sit-in and laid out the party's future strategy.
Mengal commended BNP-M workers for their dedication during the prolonged protest, saying their perseverance under difficult conditions reflected the party's determination.
He expressed concern over the recent agreement between the provincial government and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), suggesting it could compromise Balochistan's resource rights and the spirit of the 18th Amendment.
"Such developments raise questions about provincial autonomy and the control of local resources," he noted.
"We will continue to advocate for our constitutional rights through peaceful and democratic means," he said.
Advocate Sajid Tarin stated that the BNP-M intended to approach the high court to challenge the mineral agreements, while Agha Hasan Baloch encouraged young people and women to take part in the rallies to help build a stronger future for the province.
The BNP-M had on Wednesday announced the end of its 20-day sit-in protest at Lak Pass, Mastung, which had been staged against the arrests of Baloch rights activists including Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leader Dr Mahrang Baloch.

Tarar seeks to defend convictions of PTI lawmakers

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly grew tense on Monday as Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar strongly defended the convictions of opposition PTI lawmakers in the May 9 cases, drawing sharp criticism from the opposition and reigniting partisan tensions. Tarar, speaking during a session held to honour the late opposition lawmaker Mian Muhammad Azhar of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who died last month, defended the recent sentences handed down to PTI-linked rioters, calling them 'fully justified' following trials that spanned 15 months. The remarks angered lawmakers from PTI, who accused the minister of injecting politics into a session intended to honour Azhar, a veteran politician widely respected across party lines. Tarar, for his part, remained tight-lipped in the face of the backlash. 'Make up your mind, Minister, but stop playing courtroom cheerleader,' retorted PTI stalwart Latif Khosa, accusing Tarar of turning a memorial session into a partisan stage. Khosa slammed the minister for 'secretly' visiting Azhar's grieving son, Hammad Azhar, yet refusing to drop what PTI calls a politically motivated case against him. 'How long will politicians keep playing puppets for unelected powers,' he thundered, slamming pro-establishment antics that, according to him, poison the country's fragile democracy. Despite the drama, tributes continued to pour in for the late Azhar, a rare unifying figure in the country's polarised politics. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, with a sombre tone, revealed he had stayed in regular contact with Azhar during his final 16 months. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, usually a PTI critic, called Azhar a 'man of principle' who never indulged in dirty politics even after parting ways with PML-N. 'He was the only PTI lawmaker who crossed the aisle to shake hands with us,' Asif added. 'That takes guts and grace.' Former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf called Azhar 'a gentleman in a toxic game,' while MQM's Farooq Sattar praised his adherence to the now-rare 'golden rules of decent politics.' In an emotional moment, PTI's Amir Dogar reminded the House of Azhar's resilience – taking his son's place in Parliament after Hammad Azhar was barred from the 2024 elections due to 9 May allegations. But the real gut punch came when Dogar described how Azhar – a septuagenarian statesman – was manhandled by police outside Adiala Jail during a peaceful protest for Imran Khan. 'That image will haunt our democracy,' Dogar said, his voice cracking. 'A stain we may never wash off.' Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the information minister should have refrained from raising the issue of convictions, emphasising that the moment called for moving beyond confrontational politics. At the same time, he urged PTI lawmakers to reflect on the past, recalling how Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was not permitted to attend his mother's funeral during Imran Khan's tenure. He also paid tribute to the late Mian Muhammad Azhar, noting his personal ties with the deceased. PTI members like Sherhryar Afridi and Ali Muhammad Khan joined the chorus of praise, united in grief over a political elder who, regardless of party, was seen as a symbol of civility in an increasingly brutal arena. PTI lawmakers attended the session and placed pictures of the party's recently disqualified MNAs – including opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, Abdul Latif, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Jamshed Dasti, Zartaj Gul, and Rai Hassan Nawaz – on their seats. Mafias encroach upon 7.7pc of land of railways, NA told

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly was informed on Monday that Pakistan Railways oversees a land bank of approximately 168,858 acres nationwide, of which about 7.7 percent – or roughly 13,122 acres – is currently under the grab of powerful land mafias. In a written reply to questions asked by the lawmakers, Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi said the ministry has ramped up a nationwide anti-encroachment drive in coordination with provincial governments. He said that provincial inspectors general and chief secretaries have been asked to provide logistical and enforcement support, including police deployment. The minister said that notices are being issued with a 14-day window for occupants to vacate encroached lands, adding so far, 2,552 acres have been reclaimed between 2020 and 2025. To bolster oversight, the Pakistan Railways Land Management and Information System (PRLMIS) has been implemented with digitizing and geo-referencing land records while integrating them with provincial databases. The platform is accessible via mobile application, enabling real-time monitoring and administrative tracking, he added. Abbasi said that the ministry is also taking steps to regularise unauthorised government use of railway land by issuing leases under updated land-use policies. 'Commercial encroachments are being addressed through a remedial leasing program, which includes upfront premiums and settlement of arrears,' he added. According to the minister, between 2020 and June 2025, Pakistan Railways registered 5,182 encroachment cases, achieving a prosecution (challan) rate of 99.58 percent and a conviction rate of 96.71 percent. Of the 5,611 individuals accused, nearly all were from the general public, with only 20 remaining at large. The minister also told the House that Pakistan Railways has generated Rs13.93 billion in revenue from leasing and licensing its land holdings over the past three fiscal years – 2022-23 to 2024-25. In written reply submitted to the House, Abbasi said the state-run Pakistan Railways collected Rs2.631 billion in financial year 2022-23, Rs4.933 billion in 2023-24 and Rs6.366 billion in financial year 2024-25. In a separate written reply, Minister for Water Resources Muhammad Moeen Wattoo briefed the House about the progress of the Diamer Basha Dam project, a multi-phase infrastructure initiative estimated to cost Rs2.079 trillion. The project is divided into three primary components: Rs480 billion for the dam's civil works and hydro-mechanical systems; Rs1.42 trillion for power generation infrastructure; and Rs174.7 billion allocated to ancillary developments. However, in the current fiscal year (2025–26), only Rs25 billion has been allocated to the dam portion— far short of the Rs. 94 billion required. Wattoo also reported that 48 dam projects have been completed with federal funding over the past three years, providing a combined storage capacity of approximately 337,000 acre-feet and enabling irrigation for nearly 285,000 acres of newly cultivated land. Provincial governments, he said, have independently completed an additional 118 dam projects under their respective Annual Development Programs. The federal government is presently sponsoring 18 more dam initiatives at various stages of construction, with a combined cost exceeding Rs1.036 trillion. Once completed, these dams are expected to store over 8.2 million acre-feet of water and bring more than 346,000 acres under cultivation. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Prolonged closure hurting businesses: IHC directs DC to hold talks with BYC protesters

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) directed the Islamabad deputy commissioner (DC) to hold talks with the demonstrators protesting outside the National Press Club (NPC) and ensure the peaceful end of the protest. A single bench of Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar, on Monday, heard the petition filed by an owner of a petrol pump at F-6 who is aggrieved due to continuing protest by Baloch outside the press club. He adopted the stance that protests be managed that roads be opened so that business may not suffer. During the proceeding, the chief justice questioned why is the road blocked? Advocate General Islamabad Ayyaz Shaukat informed the court that members of the Baloch Youth Council (BYC) were leading the protest. When questioned by the Chief Justice about whether permission had been granted for the demonstration, the Advocate General admitted that no such permission was given. He said that they disperse them but they return. The IHC chief justice expressed concerns over the prolonged closure of road by the protestors and asked Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon to negotiate with the protesting people and tell them that they cannot sit here. The bench questioned the administration's approach and emphasised the need for immediate and effective action. Justice Dogar remarked that the measures taken so far are inadequate, adding that 'you are responsible for protecting the property rights of others as well.' The deputy commissioner told the court that an alternative location could be offered to the protesters. In response to it, the chief justice ordered him to engage with the demonstrators and ensure the site is cleared. He also directed to submit a progress report on the next hearing, which is scheduled after two weeks, without failure. Clarifying it, Justice Dogar said that 'when they say 15 days, it does not mean you return after 15 days.' The DC assured the court that action would be taken immediately. The petitioner's counsel urged the court to expedite its directives, stating that local businesses had come to a standstill. In response to it, the chief justice remarked, 'The direction has been given.' Later, the bench deferred hearing of the case for two weeks. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
