US trade deal will boost food PH supply, cut prices — DA
'Secretary Frederick Go and Trade Secretary Cristina Roque have assured us that the top priority for Philippine trade negotiators is protecting our local producers,' said Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. in a statement said.
Earlier, President Donald Trump had announced that the Philippines has agreed to a 19 percent tariff on its exports to the US, while granting duty-free access to American goods entering the country.
However, Malacañang clarified that a final trade agreement is still being finalized by trade negotiators.
According to the DA, Go, Special Assistant to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for Investment and Economic Affairs, 'assured the Philippines has not made any concessions that would harm local producers. His remarks come amid growing concern over the potential impact of a tariff deal on key Philippine industries.'
'Secretary Go has maintained that any trade agreement must strike a balance between improving market access and safeguarding the livelihoods of Filipino workers and farmers,' the DA said. — RF, GMA Integrated News

Romualdez reelected Speaker for 20th Congress
Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez was reelected as Speaker of the House of Representatives during the opening of the First Regular Session of the 20th Congress Monday. Romualdez secured his second consecutive stint as top House leader with 269 votes after his nomination was supported by the following political parties: Party-list Coalition represented by TUCP party-list Rep. Raymond Democrito Mendoza Lakas-CMD represented by Quezon Rep. Jayjay Suarez Nationalist People's Coalition represented by Quezon Rep. Mark Enverga Nacionalista Party represented by Yevgeny Emano National Unity Party represented by Antipolo Rep. Ronaldo Puno Partido Federal ng Pilipinas represented by Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos "I rise today to nominate a man whose leadership has been tested, proven, and deeply felt across this chamber and beyond: the Honorable Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez. Marcelino Libanan. All the House members who did not vote for Romualdez will elect their leader in a separate election. NEW YORK — More than a hundred activists gathered in front of the Philippine Consulate General in New York to stage a protest dubbed the "People's State of the Nation Address" (PSONA). The demonstration was organized by militant groups Migrante, Malaya Movement, Gabriela USA, and BAYAN USA. It was held on July 27, Sunday (US time), ahead of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s fourth State of the Nation Address before Philippine Congress. Protesters voiced their grievances over what they described as the slow response of the Philippine Consulate and the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. to the arrest of Filipinos affected by the new immigration policy of US President Donald Trump. The groups also condemned the alleged US militarization of the Philippines, including the deployment of American ammunition and military arsenal—warning that such actions could further escalate geopolitical tensions between America, China, and the Philippines. They likewise criticized what they called an "unequal trade agreement" entered into by Marcos with Trump, claiming the deal puts the Philippines at an economic disadvantage. Additionally, the protesters slammed the Philippine government's slow response to the recent widespread flooding in the country, which has claimed the lives of more than 31 individuals.
