Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna alleges anti-communal task force targets hindu activists
UDUPI: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna on Sunday claimed that the anti-communal task force announced by Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, in the backdrop of the murder of VHP activist Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru, would work against Hindu activists.
In a statement on Saturday night, Suvarna stated that the aim behind forming such a force by the government is to target Hindu activists and frame them in false cases. He further said that Parameshwara was pressurised by the Muslim community leaders during the former's recent visit to Mangaluru in this regard, and the home minister succumbed to the pressure tactics.
He said that during a meeting chaired by Parameshwara in Mangaluru recently, the Muslim community leaders expressed their anger while asserting their viewpoints, despite police presence. The ministers who came to Dakshina Kannada did not even consult local MLAs to discuss about restoring peace. '
'Earlier, the Congress government didn't agree to form an anti-narcotics wing, however, now with the intention to curb the voice of Hindu activists, it is going ahead with forming an anti-communal task force,' he rued. This way, the state government wants to portray the 'coastal district' as being communally-sensitive, which could impede its economic and social development.
Suvarna also sought the resignation of Assembly Speaker UT Khader, alleging that the latter tried to influence the investigation by falsely stating that Fazil's family had no role in Shetty's murder. ''Now details have emerged that Fazil's brother is the prime accused in Shetty's murder. Khader should resign,' he demanded.

‘Be like Colonel Sofiya Qureshi: BJP's minority wing to spread message at Shaheen Bagh chaupal today
In an attempt to motivate Muslim women to join the Indian Army, the BJP's Minority Morcha will be organising a 'minority chaupal' in Shaheen Bagh, Tuesday. The initiative marks the first such event in the Capital as part of a nationwide campaign by the minority wing to mark the Narendra Modi government's first anniversary of its third term in office The chaupal, according to party organisers, is aimed at encouraging Muslim women — particularly young girls — to consider careers in the Indian Army, including under the Agniveer recruitment scheme. The event will also include the distribution of copies of the Indian Constitution and information sessions on various government programs. 'Through this chaupal, Minority Morcha National President Jamal Siddiqui will inspire Muslim girls to join the Army, taking inspiration from officers like Colonel Sofiya Qureshi,' said Ashu Chaudhary, Delhi State Executive Member and programme coordinator. 'Muslim women will also be informed about their rights and achievements of the Modi government over the past 11 years.' Colonel Qureshi was the Indian Army officer who had briefed the media during Operation Sindoor. Siddiqui will be the chief guest at the event. A camp for one-stop registration under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana will be set up as part of the programme. Shaheen Bagh, which gained national attention during the 2019–20 anti-CAA protests led largely by Muslim women, has been chosen for the pilot chaupal under this campaign. In preparation for the chaupal, the Minority Morcha has reached out to residents through phone calls, text messages, and posters inviting them to attend, a party source said. Sources also said that the event is part of a broader campaign by the minority wing to reach minority communities across the country. 'State units have been tasked with forming teams at the district level to organise similar Chaupals nationwide, aimed at increasing awareness of central government initiatives and encouraging participation in civic and national programmes,' a minority morcha leader said. The campaign also comes in the backdrop of criticism faced by the party after BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Minister of Tribal Welfare, Kunwar Vijay Shah, had made remarks about Colonel Qureshi. Shah, an important tribal leader in the BJP ranks and a controversial figure, had said at an event near Mhow last month that 'India had taught a lesson to those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack using their own sister (unki samaaj ki behen ke zariye)', triggering a backlash from the Congress that alleged he referred to Col Qureshi. While the party has not officially responded to the incident, the minister later apologised and said that the comment was misunderstood and was a 'linguistic error.' While announcing the minority chaupal on Monday, the minority morcha stated, 'In the chaupal, while discussing with the daughters, they will be told about Colonel Qureshi and they will be inspired to be like her.'

After Sarasbaug closure, plea against entry ban on religious ground
Pune: Activists from the Muslim community on Monday submitted a letter to the district collector's office requesting an enquiry into the closure of Sarasbaug on Sunday after Rajya Sabha member Medha Kulkarni wrote to PMC objecting celebration of Basi Eid by eating non-vegetarian food in the garden that also hosts a temple. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Anwar Shaikh, director of Miss Farha Charitable Foundation who wrote the letter, claimed that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s decision to keep Sarasbaug closed was "discriminatory in nature", and action must be taken against officials involved in the decision. Basi Eid was celebrated a day after Saturday's Eid-al-Adha. Shaikh, who tried meeting the PMC commissioner and district collector on Monday but could not, submitted his letter in their respective offices. Shaikh said he would move court, the state human rights commission and other constitutional forums for justice if timely action was not taken. "We also want a public apology from PMC officials for hurting the sentiments and denying public access. They should also give written assurances that no public space will be closed in future based on religion, politics or biased recommendations," he said. Shaikh in his letter to the collector said the decision "created a sense of alienation and exclusion among tax-paying citizens, especially Muslims, who have an equal right to every public facility and violated the right to equality (Article 14), freedom to practice religion (Article 25), and freedom of movement and expression (Article 19) enshrined in the Constitution". When contacted, PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said he would examine the issue, check if the place (Sarasbaug) had been historically used for celebrations after Eid, and why the gardens department issued a closure notice on Sunday. He said: "The allegation that I acted solely on the MP's letter is untrue. I received MP Medha Kulkarni's letter on Friday. As I do not know details about this garden, I called the head of the gardens department and told him to look into the matter. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now There is a temple inside the garden. I only know that Muslims were not allowed to visit the temple premises," he said. Ram said: "However, if the Muslims were not allowed into the garden, then I will ask the head of the gardens department on what basis the decision was taken. There was no intention to hurt any religious sentiments." Shaikh, however, said the public garden has hosted many Hindu religious festivals and even stayed open late to facilitate such festivals. "We have never objected to the park being used for Hindu religious festivals, because we respect all religions. Then why are we being discriminated against? Today it is the park, tomorrow you may block hospitals for us, saying we eat non-vegetarian food. If they wanted to protect the sanctity of the temple, they could have cordoned off the area around the temple or instructed people not to eat anything," he Shaikh. MP Kulkarni told TOI that she had asked PMC to close the garden on Sunday as various Hindu organisations had complained that non-vegetarian food could be consumed on the temple premises during Basi Eid. "The entire area belongs to the temple trust, which was leased to PMC. It is not that the garden is separate from the temple. One can eat non-vegetarian food at home, but not near the temple." Arvind Shinde, the city unit chief of Congress, said the PMC's "action was unconstitutional". He said: "I spoke to the commissioner over the phone and told him to take action against the superintendent of the civic body's gardens department. In all these years, nobody has complained about eating anything in the garden. This is the first time an MP is trying to disturb the harmony of Pune. If you had an issue with people eating non-vegetarian food, you should have said that or banned all kinds of eating on the garden premises.

BJP delegation visits Dakshina Kannada, warns of a massive protest
Mangaluru: The BJP delegation, led by state president Vijayendra, visited Dakshina Kannada on Monday and warned that a massive protest would be organised if the police continued to harass Hindutva activists in the district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The delegation, including opposition leader in the assembly, R Ashoka, and in the council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, former Union minister D V Sadananda Gowda, and other party functionaries, felt that curbing love jihad, cow slaughter, drug rackets, and the sand mafia would ensure peace in the district. Following developments over the murder of Suhas Shetty, they decided to meet Hindutva leaders and police officials. "Police acted under the pretext of law enforcement, exhibiting hooliganism. They raided the houses of VHP, Bajrang Dal, and Hindu Jagaran Vedike activists at midnight and threatened their parents. A woman police constable pointed a revolver at the parents of a Hindutva activist and threatened that their son would not be allowed to walk, eat, or sleep," he said, adding that the anti-communal force formed by the Siddaramaiah-led state govt was the reason for all these. "Since DK is a strong bastion of Hindu organisations and the BJP, the Congress govt wants to threaten our workers. Suhas Shetty was murdered in a filmy style. Police take more than 10 days to trace all the accused when Hindutva activists are murdered. However, when a Muslim is murdered, an FIR is registered immediately against Hindutva activists without checking whether they are actually involved or not. The police department is working under pressure from the Congress govt," Vijayendra said, adding: "The state govt did not consider the demand of Shetty's mother, but the central govt has handed over the murder case to NIA. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now There are reports of foreign funding in the murder." Referring to the stampede — that claimed 11 lives — during the RCB victory event in Bengaluru, Vijayendra said police officers were made scapegoats because of the govt's fault. In the FIR registered against RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, he stated that he had spoken within four walls. The police did not act against Congress MLC Ivan D'Souza, who spoke publicly against the Prime Minister and the governor. He also accusdd the police department of being puppets at the hands of the state govt.
