South Africa's youngest news consumers are disengaging from traditional journalism. Instead, they rely on digital platforms that prioritise speed, user choice and algorithmic influence, often at the expense of credibility and sustained attention.

The result is a growing disconnect between young audiences and traditional media outlets. Many young people favour content that feels personal and direct, fuelling a global move toward personality-driven journalism. Influencers and independent creators often receive greater engagement than established news outlets.
'The myth is that young people don't consume media [and] news or read a lot. The reality is that they do, but have a different view of what, how and where they should find and consume it,' said Anton Harber, author and former professor at the University of the Witwatersrand and of the Mail & Guardian.
Young people consume considerable amounts of media, but their consumption patterns differ from older generations, Harber explained. Journalists are struggling to connect with them on the platforms and through the formats they prefer.
'There is a disconnect between journalists and young audiences, largely being filled by influencers and chancers who often pretend to be doing journalism but have none of the verification processes, rules and ethics of journalism.'
Digital platforms have introduced speed and reach, breaking down the traditional gatekeepers of information. This has expanded access to news, but it has also blurred the lines between credible reporting and unverified content.
'We are flooded by a rich mix of information and disinformation. We have less quality, in-depth, probing journalism and less capacity to know what is true or fake,' Harber said.
South Africa reflects the global anxiety over misinformation. In its 2025 report, the Reuters Institute notes that 73% of South Africans are concerned about their ability to discern real from fake information online. This is on par with the United States and Nigeria, but well above the global average of 58%.
In addition, the report shows that 55% of South Africans trust the news most of the time, placing the country fifth out of the 48 surveyed. This indicates that trust in news remains relatively strong, but it is steadily declining from the 61% recorded in 2022.
'There has been a deliberate campaign to undermine trust in traditional media for malicious and disruptive purposes, often by governments and organisations attempting to undermine democracy by flooding the zone with disinformation,' Harber said.
Mistrust has been amplified by social media algorithms that prioritise aggravating content. Rather than offering clarity, these platforms contribute to information fatigue and deepen public scepticism. 'Social media has facilitated this by using algorithms that favour information that is disruptive, conflictual and anxiety-inducing.'
Despite Harber's concerns about the structural risks of algorithmic media, the fast-paced and personalised nature of social media platforms continues to appeal to many young South Africans.
Farhana Essop, a law and politics student, said she receives most of her news on Instagram. She explained that she is interested in current affairs but finds traditional forms of news outdated and 'unengaging'.
Essop also believes that some newsrooms contain biases, which become embedded into the news published for public consumption.
For her, social media is a reliable alternative because it can provide diverse perspectives and first-hand accounts of situations.
'There's a lot of people who are dedicated to giving you both sides and showing you what's actually happening,' she said.
Despite the risk of misinformation online, Essop believes the interactive nature of social media provides more context and clarity than traditional media.
For Sydney, a psychology student, the constant stream of information — however accessible — can be overwhelming. She believes that staying informed is important, but not at the expense of mental wellbeing.
'You need to be knowledgeable to some extent about what's going on. There are real problems. We need to be aware of that. But when it gets to a point where it affects your mental health and it affects how you perceive certain things — or it clashes with your views — you can distance yourself from it,' she said.
Sydney believes that reporting on sensitive topics objectively can underplay the experiences of those affected. This can unintentionally distance readers from the story.
'A lot of [journalists] target very personal and intimate topics from an objective point of view, and some things can't be looked at objectively. When you don't regard the human aspect of [news], it becomes very impersonal.'
Shiloh Marsh, a third-year media student, believes the way news is delivered plays a crucial role in how young people engage with it.

To reconnect with young people, Marsh thinks media houses should employ young reporters and news anchors. 'It's very much the same people that you saw from 20 years ago. We need new faces to interest us.'
Marsh says news should be kept easy to understand, and argues that some journalists ask interviewees over-complicated questions and write in jargon that makes news inaccessible for young people.
'I think there's a huge gap between how the news is told versus how young people interpret it,' she said.
The challenge lies in the media's resistance to change, Harber contends. Newsrooms must move beyond rigid, formulaic practices and adopt storytelling formats that reflect how young audiences connect with information today.
To rebuild trust and remain relevant, journalism must embrace approaches that prioritise transparency and conversation.
'The research shows that young people want to see the faces of those bringing them information [to] identify with them and — most of all — they must be authentic. [Young people] want conversations, not lectures,' he added.

Beyond the balance sheet: Costs and benefits of broad-based BEE
Any discussion about black economic empowerment must weigh up its benefits, addressing historical injustices and the costs of not transforming the economy. Photo: File The current media debate around broad-based black economic empowerment (broad-based BEE) has brought fresh attention to the policy's effect on the economy — raising important questions about its effectiveness, costs and outcomes. As this conversation grows louder, it's worth taking a closer look at some of the arguments being made. An example from the debate is a recent study released by Solidarity and the Free Market Foundation (FMF), which arguably overlooks certain key economic implications of B-BBEE. Titled The Costs of B-BBEE Compliance, the report estimates that broad-based BEE may reduce South Africa's GDP growth by as much as 1.5 to 3% annually, potentially resulting in 96,000 to 192,000 fewer jobs each year. It further contends that the policy disproportionately benefits a narrow elite while imposing undue compliance costs on the broader economy. While such figures demand scrutiny, they also warrant a critical examination of the underlying assumptions, methodology and, crucially, the broader socio-economic context in which broad-based BEE operates. One of the most significant concerns with the report is its presentation of correlation as causation. The paper attributes specific percentages of GDP loss and job losses directly to broad-based BEE but does not demonstrate how these effects were isolated from South Africa's myriad economic problems. South Africa's macroeconomic environment remains deeply constrained by structural impediments such as: Chronic electricity and water shortages, including load shedding; Global economic headwinds; Endemic corruption; and Policy uncertainty and governance deficits. Attributing complex macroeconomic trends solely to broad-based BEE risks simplifies a nuanced reality and underestimates the multifactorial nature of South Africa's growth constraints. Equally important is the report's limited treatment of the potential benefits of broad-based BEE. Many of which manifest over the medium to long term and are difficult to quantify through conventional compliance cost frameworks alone. Equity equivalent programmes (EEPs) enable multinational corporations, constrained by global ownership structures, to achieve ownership points through local investments in enterprise development, skills transfer and innovation. Far from being passive mechanisms, EEPs represent substantial, targeted injections into the domestic economy. IBM, for example, committed R700 million over 10 years to enterprise development, research and education. This included support for 74 black-owned businesses and fully funded bursaries for dozens of students from disadvantaged backgrounds in critical fields of information and communication technology. Samsung also made a substantial commitment, launching a R280 million equity equivalent investment programme (EEIP) in May 2019, projected to contribute nearly R1 billion to the South African economy over its 10-year duration. This programme aimed for a measurable effect on job creation, specifically targeting the creation of 262 direct jobs and supporting 13 black-owned and women-owned businesses. A notable focus of Samsung's investment is on industrialisation by black people through e-Waste recycling and beneficiation research and development, including the establishment of the first black-owned and operated e-waste beneficiation plant in Africa. These company-specific statistics, alongside broader programmes such as JP Morgan's Abadali EEIP, which aims for an additional 1,000 permanent jobs and R2 billion in financing transactions, underscore the crucial role of EEPs in boosting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly black-owned businesses, by providing essential funding, business support and mentorship. Furthermore, these programmes significantly advance skills development, with more than 2,500 beneficiaries receiving critical skills training, and facilitating technology transfer, aligning with South Africa's national development goals and fostering a more inclusive and skilled workforce. The YES programme directly targets South Africa's intractable youth unemployment crisis. Since its inception in 2018, YES has facilitated more than 186,000 quality work experiences for young people, injecting nearly R11 billion in salaries into the economy. About 45% of participants secure permanent employment after placement, and 17% establish their own businesses, multiplying the long-term economic benefit. The initiative also encourages private sector participation by offering measurable broad-based BEE recognition for companies that create these opportunities. Enterprise and supplier development (ESD) remains a cornerstone of the broad-based BEE framework, driving significant investment into the SMME sector. South African corporates reportedly channel R20 billion to R30 billion annually into ESD programmes, helping integrate black-owned businesses into supply chains and enabling sustainable growth. For instance, the Shoprite Group's CredX programme has provided R10 billion in working capital to suppliers, while its Next Capital initiative has invested R20 million to support new black-owned enterprises. Collectively, such interventions empower black entrepreneurs, expand the tax base and generate employment in communities historically excluded from meaningful economic participation. Why broad-based BEE still matters Perhaps the most profound omission in the Solidarity and FMF report is its decontextualised approach to broad-based BEE's rationale. Apartheid was not merely a political system; it was an economic design that systematically dispossessed black South Africans of land, capital, skills and opportunities. This entrenched economic disenfranchisement cannot be dismantled simply by repealing discriminatory laws. Broad-based BEE emerged as a policy instrument to facilitate redress, promote equitable economic participation and mitigate the persistent structural inequality that threatens social cohesion and long-term stability. Any analysis that fails to account for this historical imperative and the potential socio-economic cost of neglecting it, is incomplete. There is little doubt that broad-based BEE can and should be improved. Calls for greater transparency, genuine empowerment outcomes, and tighter controls to prevent fronting and inefficiency are well-founded. But presenting a one-sided narrative that focuses exclusively on compliance costs while disregarding significant economic and social returns undermines the opportunity for a more balanced, evidence-based debate. As South Africa grapples with the problems of inclusive growth, any meaningful conversation about the future of broad-based BEE must extend beyond a narrow cost-benefit calculus. It must weigh the policy's role in addressing historical injustices, its measurable and often intangible benefits, and the opportunity costs of not transforming the economy. A policy of this nature should not be romanticised or demonised without context. Instead, it demands honest, nuanced discussion, one that prioritises national development, social cohesion and sustainable, broad-based participation in the economy. The question should not be whether broad-based BEE has costs but rather whether we are collectively doing enough to ensure that its benefits are fully realised and that it continues to evolve to serve the South Africa we aspire to build. Evil doesn't wait for language: We must name xenophobia for what it is

File photo A friend recently commented on a Facebook post I shared about the counter-protest we held against Operation Dudula on Thursday, 17 July 2025. She referred to something Thabo Mbeki once said to a group of African congregants: 'What is xenophobia in our African languages?' Apparently, the room went quiet. She was suggesting that maybe, if we don't have a word for xenophobia in our languages, the concept itself is foreign — or maybe not real in the way it's being described. She went on to say that people who do have the words — shaped by other histories — sometimes use those words not to understand others, but to control them or to feel morally superior. And that those who are being labelled often have every reason to reject the labels, because they weren't part of shaping the words in the first place. She said if we really took the time to listen, we might discover that there's no hate at all — just frustration and disillusionment. I've been thinking about that. And I want to respond not just in the comments but more publicly here. The fact that a word doesn't exist in a language doesn't mean the thing it describes doesn't exist. Patriarchy, racism, apartheid — all of these systems existed long before we had names for them. Evil doesn't wait for language. It just acts. And this argument — that something doesn't exist because there's no word for it — has been used before. Hendrik Verwoerd said apartheid wasn't oppression, it was just 'separate development'. They tried to rename injustice to make it sound benign. But we all know renaming it didn't make it any less violent. If anything, it made it harder to fight. The same is true of xenophobia. I've stood face-to-face with Operation Dudula in the streets — at Hilbrow Clinic, where people were being chased away from medical care simply because they were foreign nationals. I was there at Yeoville Market when they were protesting to get rid of long-time traders, and that market ended up burned down. I've stood toe-to-toe with them on many occasions. And I've also sat down with their leaders. I've had proper sit-down meetings with them — some of them former branch leaders. I've spent hours listening to them. I've brought documented evidence to show that what they were saying wasn't true. I've tried to have real conversations. I've listened to stories from leaders in the Free State. I've listened. I've negotiated. I've tried to understand. But I've also heard the scapegoating. The blaming. I've seen the twisting of truth to justify violence. And that's what we have to call it — violence. I've also walked with the people who've suffered because of this movement. I've taken people to police stations to lay charges. I've sat with community members from across the country who've been threatened, beaten, chased and traumatised. Let me tell you about Dido. He was a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. One day, he was chased down the street in Johannesburg with people shouting, 'foreigner!' A dog was set on him. It mauled him for four hours before someone finally intervened. He was taken to Baragwanath Hospital and lay in a coma for three months. After he was discharged, I took him into my home in Orange Grove to help him recover. Later, we arranged for him to move in with a fellow Congolese man who could support him more long-term. But during another wave of xenophobic attacks, Dido was chased again. The stress triggered a fragment from his original injury to dislodge. He suffered a stroke and died. I mourned him as a friend and a brother. What do we call that, if not hatred? Then there's my friend Nthombi. She was eight months pregnant, selling mielies on the pavement in Orange Grove. A leader from Operation Dudula from the Free State approached her, shouted at her, and violently overturned her mielie stand. I was there. I helped her pick up the pieces. Later, I sat down with that very man for three hours in a church-mediated conversation. I listened to him. And I didn't hear justice. I heard fear, I heard blame, and I heard an unwillingness to see her humanity. And then there's Elvis Nyathi. He was a 43-year-old Zimbabwean man living in Diepsloot. During a door-to-door 'inspection' he couldn't produce an ID. He was dragged from his home, beaten, doused in petrol, and necklaced — burned alive. I stood with his mother while his body was loaded into the hearse. I held her. I said, 'I'm so sorry.' What words are enough to describe that kind of horror? This isn't just frustration. This isn't just disillusionment. This is fear and anger weaponised against the vulnerable. It is xenophobia. And if we don't name it, we're complicit in it. But there's something else I've seen — something that gives me hope. At the counter-protest this past week against Operation Dudula, we weren't alone. Abahlali baseMjondolo came. Informal Traders Associations. The recyclers. The Inner City Federation. Civil society allies. It's no exaggeration to say that more than 90% of the people on our side of that protest were poor South Africans — people living in shacks, in inner-city slums, in difficult, often horrific, conditions. These were not the elite. These were the people Dudula claims to speak for. And yet, these are the people who stood up and said: 'No. The problem isn't that we have foreign nationals living here. The problem is the unhealed legacy of apartheid. The problem is inequality. The problem is corruption, and neoliberalism, and capitalism. The problem is a government that has failed to deliver justice.' These are people who know hardship. And they know that turning on their neighbours is not the answer. These are the people who reflect the heart of Africa. Who embody ubuntu. They believe that South Africa — and Africa — belongs to all who live in it. They believe the Freedom Charter wasn't just words. That we must give it meaning. That we must fight for land, for justice, for economic transformation. That we must build real solidarity, not deepen division. We also need to name something else. Operation Dudula isn't just some organic grassroots uprising. It is deeply influenced by the thinking and structure of colonialism. It upholds borders that were drawn by colonial powers — borders that split families and communities and turned African neighbours into strangers. It promotes a nationalism rooted not in Pan-African unity but in division and exclusion. And if we're honest, the language and tactics being used carry disturbing echoes of fascism — of movements in history that mobilised poor people's pain to justify violence against scapegoated groups. So no, we may not have always had the word 'xenophobia' in indigenous African languages. But we've known the pain and lived the trauma. Let's not be distracted by whether we have the perfect word. Let's ask whether there is harm. And if there is, let's name it and deal with it. Nigel Branken is a social worker, pastor and activist. Kenny Kunene faces probe after he was found at murder accused's home
Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie says his deputy Kenny Kunene will be subjected to an investigation after police found him at the Sandton house of murder accused Katiso 'KT' Molefe. "I believe Kenny 100%. I can't expect everyone to believe him, hence we are launching a full investigation to prove what we know, which is that he is innocent," McKenzie said. Kunene is on special leave for 30 days. McKenzie said: "We will share the process and findings." Kunene told media outlets on Tuesday he was at the house when police arrived to arrest Molefe because he was facilitating an interview with a newsmaker for journalists from his online news platform. Molefe is accused of being the mastermind who ordered the hits on DJ Sumbody and Armand Swart, a Vereeniging engineer killed after his company allegedly flagged price gouging in a Transnet tender. The DA in Gauteng has called for Kunene's resignation or for Joburg mayor Dada Morero to fire him. The party said his role as Joburg's transport MMC is untenable. In a Facebook Live on Tuesday, McKenzie said the party would appoint a team to investigate the matter for 30 days. During that time, Kunene would be suspended from his city role and would not be involved in party matters. 'Kunene will be investigated by lawyers of good character. While he's being investigated, I'm going to remove him from being an MMC,' McKenzie said. 'I'm also going to tell him to stand back from politics for one month until the investigation is done. That's the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. 'I know Kenny Kunene. People think he's my friend but he's not. He was my friend, but he went past that and became a brother I never had. He's the one person who made me change my life in jail. He's the godfather of my children. I'm the godfather of his children. 'He would never get involved with murders. Ghat's not him.
