GNDU VC Karamjit Singh seen on stage with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Kerala, courts controversy

Time of India15 hours ago
Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) vice chancellor Dr Karamjit Singh courted controversy after he attended a meeting in Kerala where Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat was seen seated on the stage.
In a viral video from the event, Karamjit Singh is seen addressing the gathering while Bhagwat remains on dais. Although the audio is unclear, the VC appears to be speaking about the introduction of new academic courses on Bhartiya parampara (Indian traditions) and the establishment of a Sikh Studies Chair.
This chair, he says, would explore links between the Rigveda and Guru Nanak Dev's teachings, particularly the concept of Sarbat da Bhala (welfare of all).
He also reportedly touched on issues related to the environment and Punjab's industry.
Reacting to the video, the leader of opposition in Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, posted on X: "The GNDU VC bowing before RSS chief isn't just shameful — it's a symbol of how education in Punjab is being hijacked. Kejriwal, a closet Sanghi, and Bhagwant Mann are enabling RSS infiltration into our universities."
Terming the AAP a 'B team' of the BJP, Bajwa cautioned: "B-team, stop this ideological takeover."
Congress MLA Pargat Singh also posted the video on his X account, stating: "When Guru Nanak Dev University's vice chancellor is seen abjectly explaining things to the RSS chief, it raises serious questions. It shows how the AAP govt in Punjab has helped the RSS to take control of the entire education system, including universities, in Punjab. AAP govt has already shown its obedience to the right-wing agenda by implementing the NEP (National Education Policy) in toto.
"
When contacted, Dr Karamjit Singh explicitly denied addressing Mohan Bhagwat or the general gathering. He clarified that he was attending a vice chancellors' meet in Kerala and was interacting solely with fellow university heads.
"At no point did I address Mohan Bhagwat. He was present, but my interaction was limited to the vice chancellors," he said.
Karamjit Singh further said the discussion focused on potential new courses for GNDU and holding an Indian Economic Association conference and a session on environment.

Cleanliness drive ‘Dilli ko kude se azaadi' launched

New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday wielded a broom to kick off the Delhi government's month-long cleanliness drive 'Dilli Ko Kude Se Azaadi'. As part of the campaign she visited the Women and Child Development department. 'I am coming to this office for the first time. It is saddening to see that our officers work in this kind of a building. The fans can fall off any moment and the roof is leaking,' she rued as she inspected the department's office at Kashmiri Gate. CM Gupta visited every nook and corner of the office, cleared e-waste, threw away old posters and files and swept the dirty area using a broom. 'There was a fire at this building in 2021 yet no repairs were carried out,' she added. Hitting out at the previous AAP government in Delhi, she said they 'spent crores of rupees on building Sheesh Mahal' but did not do anything to improve the condition of government offices. 'Today, looking at the condition of this office, I am saddened. From today itself, we will begin the process for a new Secretariat where all departments can be housed. We will identify a site for building a new Secretariat,' she added. Talking about the campaign, she said it began with all departments cleaning their offices. 'We removed e-waste, old files and junk that was lying here. We also need to relook at rules governing tenders for waste removal,' she said.

Govt to begin process of selecting location for new secretariat: CM

New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced that Delhi government will soon begin the process of identifying a suitable location for constructing a new secretariat to house various departments in one building. She made the announcement after visiting the Women and Child Development Department office at Kashmere Gate. The chief minister flagged the dilapidated condition of the building and hit out at the AAP dispensation over the state of affairs. 'I am coming to this office for the first time. It is saddening to see that our officers work in this kind of a building. The fans can fall off any moment and the roof is leaking,' she rued as she inspected the department's office. Attacking the previous AAP government in Delhi, she recalled that there was a fire at this building in 2021 yet no repairs were carried out. 'Theirs was an educated government. They spent crores of rupees on building Sheesh Mahal but did not do anything to improve the condition of government offices,' Gupta said. 'Today, looking at the condition of this office, I am saddened. They could have Rs 2-3 crore to improve the condition of this building,' the chief minister charged. From today itself, we will begin the process for identifying a location for a new secretariat where all departments can be housed, she added. The Delhi Secretariat is located near Indira Gandhi Stadium in IP Estate.

All about India-U.S. trade: Infographics

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday (July 31, 2025) announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports into the U.S., effective August 1, following a 90-day pause in tariffs announced in April. In a post on the platform Truth Social, he called India's tariffs 'too high' and said that it had 'strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers.' He also criticised India for its fossil fuel trade with Russia. Mr. Trump has been trying to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to stop the three-year ongoing war between the two countries, with no firm deal in sight yet. In this context, here is an overview of the India-U.S. trade. How much does India export to and import from the U.S.? In 2024-25, India's exports to the U.S. were valued over 86,000 million dollars, with imports being over 45,000 million dollars. In terms of percentage, the U.S. made up around 20% of India's exports and 6.3% of its imports. India has always imported more than it exported to the U.S. Exports to the U.S. fell sharply in January this year and have continued to remain below levels not seen after 2022. India exported in March this year the lowest since April 2016. What does India send to the U.S.? India's major exports to the U.S. include telecom equipment, drug formulations and biologicals, textiles, petroleum, iron and steel, pearl and precious stones and more. However, there are variations in the percentage of each of these products that India exports to the U.S. compared to total exports of the product to all countries. For instance, India sends over 63% of all telecom exports to the U.S. For petroleum products, this is 7%. India-Russia trade One of Mr. Trump's criticisms is India's trade with Russia in the area of energy. As part of its opposition to Russia's actions in Ukraine, the European Union along with other Western countries imposed sanctions on Russian goods and individuals, and cut down on its imports of Russian energy after 2022. However, India increased its imports of Russian energy from around 2% of total Russian exports to over 20% in response to cheaper prices of discounted Russian oil. In a media briefing on Friday (August 1, 2025), the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that decisions regarding the sourcing of energy were 'based on the price at which oil is available in the international market and depending on the global situation at that time.' Similarly, External Affairs Minister said in 2023 that the country had to source oil where it was cheapest. He pointed out that European countries are 'diverting production out of the Middle East and raising prices.' Besides energy imports, India's imports of Russian military equipment was another of Mr. Trump's complaints. In 2024, India imported around 40% of its military imports from Russia. Exports to India made up 34% of Russia's total exports. According to SIPRI, Russia was the top supplier to India, followed by France and Israel in 2024. However, Indian sources told Reuters that the country was looking to pivot away from Russian arms since Russia's munitions were depleted due to its war with Ukraine. This also aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' programme to boost domestic production. On military procurement, Mr. Jaiswal said sourcing was determined 'solely by our national security imperatives and strategic assessments' on Friday. (With inputs from Reuters)
