George Osborne was on No 10 list to be UK ambassador to US, Keir Starmer's biographer says

The Guardian5 days ago
George Osborne was on Downing Street's shortlist to be the next UK ambassador to Washington, it has been claimed, despite the former Conservative chancellor being reviled by many in the Labour party and wider political left.
In the new edition of his biography on Keir Starmer, the writer Tom Baldwin suggests the prime minister's senior aides 'invested considerable effort' in unsuccessfully pushing Osborne's application. Sources confirmed to the Guardian that the former Tory politician was approached about the role.
However, Peter Mandelson was announced as the new UK ambassador last December after Starmer decided the Labour peer and former EU trade commissioner was the best candidate for what was going to be a delicate diplomatic role, with Donald Trump returning the White House.
However, the revelation that senior No 10 figures felt that Osborne, the architect of the Tory austerity that brought Britain's public services to their knees, was a suitable candidate is likely to cast further doubt on their judgment among Labour backbenchers.
There are already concerns over Downing Street's handling of the welfare cuts rebellion last week, which led to the bill being ultimately hollowed out with changes to disability payments dropped and the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, left to plug a £5bn hole in the country's finance.
At the time of the appointment, sources said Downing Street felt that a former politician might be the best option given how much Trump was opposed to bureaucrats.
Lord Mandelson was an architect of New Labour and served as a cabinet minister under both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. However, Osborne also had a reputation as a deft political strategist who had links to Washington neoconservatives. He is now an investment banker and podcast host.
In an article for the New World newspaper, Baldwin, a close ally of Starmer, argued that the prime minister should trust his own political instincts and values to find a way through the daunting domestic challenges ahead – just as he had done while navigating difficult global issues.
'Another illustration of Starmer's straight-forward approach on foreign policy was over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain's ambassador to the US in December. He has generally been regarded as a success with his political skills and swagger adapting well to the narcissistic Maga-land of Washington,' Baldwin wrote.
'The new edition of my biography reveals that this was despite, just days beforehand, the name of George Osborne being added to the final shortlist presented to the prime minister by Downing Street advisers.

'They are understood to have invested considerable effort in unsuccessfully pushing the former Tory chancellor's application, even though that perhaps unnecessarily complicated what Starmer would ultimately regard as a relatively simple decision.'
Downing Street has been approached for comment.

Restaurant crisis claims another victim as award-winning chef blames guest behavior

Washington state's award-winning restaurant The Whale Wins is set to close its doors for good after 13 years of business. Named one of the nation's best new restaurants, The Whale Wins confirmed the closure to heartbroken customers after the news started circulating. The restaurant has said that a depleting number of customers is one of the reasons why it's shuttering. 'The Whale Wins has meant the world to us, and to so many people who've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and ordinary Wednesdays at its tables,' the business said. 'But like many restaurants, we're facing rising costs that have outpaced our sales — and we've also seen fewer guests walking through our doors.' The restaurant's last day of operations will be on October 28, days before its lease will expire. 'This neighborhood staple will be sorely missed. Loved every single meal, coffee stop, conversation I've had in this space, and ooh … that outdoor space,' an Instagrammer wrote. 'This one hurts. One of my favorite, special, comfortable, experiences in town,' another fan responded on Instagram. The Whale Wins was opened by James Beard Award-winner chef Renee Erickson, with partners Jeremy Price and Chad Dale. The meals are inspired by Erickson's favorite places in Europe and England, many of which are wood-fired and vegetable focused. The foods are supplied by local beaches, gardens and farms. 'The Whale Wins is a warm, approachable, neighborhood restaurant — a place to enjoy great wines by the glass, draft beer, spirited cocktails and flavorful, ingredient focused food with friends and family,' Erickson explained on the restaurant's website. Multiple guests have shared their own stories about the restaurant, many of which were 'positive experiences.' 'Whale is such a special place for me … our trio who is now multiple coastlines apart always came together here!,' a fan wrote, adding she eventually purchased a mug to keep her memories alive. 'My husband and I visited back in 2021 from NE and still talk about your restaurant today. Thanks for an incredible experience and meal that will live in our memories forever,' a commenter added. 'We watched with awe as you pivoted to meal kits and takeaway cocktails during Covid,' the Ocean's Initiative replied. 'You always set the bar deliciously and admirably high, and kept raising it. We'll see you at another Sea Creatures venue soon. A whale-sized hug from our pod to yours.' Loyal customers have spoken highly of The Whale Wins' employees, all of whom will be offered jobs at Sea Groups' upcoming restaurants While the love for The Whale Wins is high, Price revealed it had been losing money for quite some time. 'We've tried just about everything there to turn things around — adding a larder / taking out seating, streamlining the bar program, adding lunch / brunch, taking away lunch, many different happy hour promotions, wine events, a wine club, and on and on,' Price told Eater. 'It is a fantastic restaurant, but is older, and we find that many diners gravitate to what's new, rather than becoming regulars at established, mature restaurants.' Operating under the Sea Creatures restaurant group, the company will continue running its other eateries to the best of their abilities. The company will also be opening three new restaurants later this year, where jobs for The Whale Wins' employees will be waiting for them. 'It is a really difficult time for many restaurants. We do not have more closures planned, but I think we will continue to see lots of restaurants going under in the next year or so,' Price said. 'We're so proud of what we built with The Whale Wins. We hope you'll join us in sending Whaley off with love, gratitude, and plenty of rosé,' Erickson said. Besides the Seattle establishment, legendary restaurants that have shuttered or plan to close over the past year include the La Grenouille, Robert De Niro-owned Tribeca Grill, Cole's French Dip, and Hector's Café and Diner in New York City.

Ghislaine Maxwell faces 'do or die' moment in court as US Government seeks to block retrial bid

Ghislaine Maxwell faces a critical 'do or die' moment tomorrow when the US government seeks to block her bid for a retrial. Prince Andrew's close friend Maxwell, 63, who is serving 20 years for child sex offences, has appealed to the US Supreme Court in the hope it will either throw out her conviction or order a retrial. But tomorrow lawyers for the US government will argue her appeal is 'meritless'. Last week it was revealed the FBI has dropped any investigation into Prince Andrew – accused by the late Virginia Giuffre of underage sex charges he has denied – and any other men connected to the Jeffrey Epstein case. It was also reported that Donald Trump 's promise to release the full 'Epstein client list' had been dropped, with officials saying 'there is no client list'. In response Elon Musk wrote on X: 'Then what is Ghislaine Maxwell in prison for?' Maxwell is said to be 'anxious but hopeful' about tomorrow's hearing. Last night a source said: 'This is a critical moment, a do or die moment. Ghislaine believes she has multiple grounds for appeal.' A senior DoJ source told the MoS: 'There is a powerful argument for [the Supreme Court] to take on the Maxwell case.' Maxwell had requested to the Trump administration for an appeal. In a letter last month, Solicitor General John Sauer requested more time to consider Maxwell's request. She is the only Epstein associate serving time in prison for their role in the late paedophiles sick network. Her lawyers and family are yet to appeal directly to the president. But former Trump friend and attorney Alan Dershowitz previously told the Daily Mail that he would be right to consider it. He believes the disgraced socialite's 'excessive' 20-year sentence should be commuted for her immediate release, and then a pardon. 'Certainly she should get a commutation. The sentence was way, way, way in excess of anything she was alleged to have done. 'She was in part a victim of Epstein. The fact that Epstein died made her a primary target and caused an excessive sentence to her. Some executive clemency is very much warranted in her case.' The former Harvard Law School professor has spoken out in the wake of the surprise pardons for TV reality couple Todd and Julie Chrisley, who were convicted of federal bank fraud and tax evasion charges in 2022. His remarks also come after exclusively revealed that speculation is swirling over a possible pardon for Maxwell - who is doing time in a federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida - due to her past ties to Trump. One ultra-close source to the Maxwell family told us last week: 'It's not a bad idea to ask President Trump for a pardon. He knew her. He's probably got views about whether she's guilty or innocent.' Maxwell's freedom-campaigning brothers Ian, 69, and Kevin, 66, have not so far petitioned for a pardon or commutation, the family source told us. But they have not ruled out the possibility.

‘Stop the excuses' and recognise state of Palestine, SNP tells UK government

The party's comments follow a speech by French President Emmanuel Macron during his recent state visit to the UK, in which he said recognising the state of Palestine was 'the only path to peace'. The SNP also called on the UK Government to stop the sale of arms to Israel, saying that failure by the Government to 'use the power it has' to end the conflict in Gaza would make it 'totally complicit' in what it called a 'slaughter'. SNP Middle East spokesman Brendan O'Hara MP said that if the UK Government 'could muster just a shred of conviction and courage they would have the power to act'. He went on: 'After witnessing another week of slaughter, the Labour Party could, and should, begin this new week by taking two concrete steps,' he said. 'They should start this new week by finally stopping all arms sales to Israel and finally recognising the state of Palestine. 'President Macron was crystal clear that he is preparing to join other European nations in recognising the state of Palestine and that he is pressing the UK to join this 'political momentum' towards a ceasefire and a permanent peace. 'Keir Starmer should stop the excuses and join him in recognising the state of Palestine without any more damaging delays. 'That would send the clearest of signals that we are prepared to protect and guarantee the right of the Palestinian people to their own homeland – and that all diplomatic levers will be used to prevent any plan that effectively proposes ethnic cleansing in Gaza. Earlier this week French President Emmanuel Macron said recognising Palestine was 'the only path to peace' (Leon Neal/PA) 'It is also blindingly obvious that anyone claiming to support a two-state solution must back immediate recognition of Palestine, otherwise their words ring hollow. 'If after this week Westminster stays sitting on its hands and fails to use the power it has to act, then they will be totally complicit in giving the (Benjamin) Netanyahu government impunity to commit week upon week of slaughter, even deadlier than the one Palestinians have just suffered.' The party pointed out that 144 members of the UN, including Ireland, Spain and Norway, have already moved to recognise Palestine. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said earlier this week that the UK Government remained 'completely committed' to recognition, but refused to set a time frame for it, saying it was a 'moving, live situation'. A FCDO spokesperson said: 'From day one we have taken decisive action – suspending relevant export licences, suspending trade negotiations, restarting UNRWA funding, sanctioning Israeli Ministers, providing aid to hundreds of thousands of civilians, and using our position on the UN Security Council to demand the end of this war and the full resumption of aid into Gaza. 'We continue working with international partners to end Palestinian suffering, free the hostages and secure lasting Middle East peace.'
