No proof of AI chip smuggling, says Zafrul

The Star6 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) has not found any evidence of incidents relating to the smuggling of high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) chips, said its minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
He stated that the ministry has been working closely with authorities, including the police, the Customs Department, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as well as industry players, to investigate the matter.
'So far, we have not found any (evidence). We have spoken to the United States and big players to cooperate and work with us. If there is any evidence, we will take action. The investigation continues,' he told a press conference on Miti's report card for the second quarter of 2025.
According to Tengku Zafrul, the demand for AI chips in Malaysia has been high due to its growing data centre industry.
'I think that has raised some red flags because Malaysia has started to be a dominant player in the industry,' he said, Bernama reported.
On Monday, Miti issued a new directive imposing immediate controls on the export, transshipment and transit of high-performance AI chips of US origin within Malaysia under Section 12 of the Strategic Trade Act 2010.
Tengku Zafrul emphasised that the government is dedicated to fostering a transparent and lawful trading environment for all partners and investors.
'We aim to ensure responsible trade practices, and we are currently reviewing the inclusion of AI chips in the Strategic Item List (SIL).
'We also want to make sure that we comply with international standards and obligations, he said, adding that it is to avoid secondary sanctions for the sake of the nation's industry and economy,' he said.

Anwar: Fiscal Discipline Is Working, New Debt Down To RM77 Billion

Credits to PMO FB Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed that his administration has successfully reduced the country's annual new debt to RM77 billion in 2024, a significant drop from RM99 billion in 2022, signalling stronger fiscal prudence. Speaking at the monthly gathering of the Prime Minister's Department in Putrajaya today, he clarified that only the interest payments on legacy debt remain burdensome. 'The new debt taken by the government was RM99 billion in 2022, reduced to RM93 billion in 2023, and in 2024, the total is RM77 billion… that's a reduction,' he said. Criticising misleading claims circulating publicly, Anwar pointed out that some parties continue to accuse the government of increasing debt, despite the data. 'They say the overall debt is higher, including legacy debt and interest payments, but I've stated clearly that the government pledged to reduce new debt, and we've delivered. 'However, what's being spread around suggests that we're increasing the debt, as if we're deceiving the people. If you look at these figures, who's really lying?' he asked. He also underscored that this debt reduction aligns with efforts to narrow the country's fiscal deficit. The government aims to bring the deficit down to 3.8% in 2025 from 4.1% this year and 5.5% in 2022. Anwar explained that the government opted for a gradual reduction approach to avoid disrupting development and market confidence. 'We took over in 2022, and at the time, the fiscal deficit was 5.5%. What is a deficit? It means spending exceeds the country's revenue, which means we are borrowing,' he said. 'We manage the national economy like a household. If your income is RM5,000 but you spend RM7,000, that's a deficit. So now we're reducing expenses to RM6,500, RM6,000, RM5,500, but if we cut too fast, development would stall.' The Prime Minister also credited the civil service's efforts, highlighting Malaysia's 11-spot jump in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025 to 23rd place, up from 34th last year, the country's best showing since 2020. The rise, announced by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) in June, was attributed to improvements in economic performance and government efficiency. He further noted that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its Article IV Mission report for 2025, commended Malaysia's fiscal reform agenda, particularly the introduction of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA). 'What does that mean? It means the Finance Minister has handed over part of his powers to Parliament to assess if targets are not being met. That's what we've done,' he said. Related

Immigration dept to roll out MyVisa 2.0 on Aug 1

The immigration department said MyVisa 2.0, launched by deputy home minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, will go live on Aug 1. (Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : The immigration department will begin implementing MyVisa 2.0, an integrated digital visa platform for foreign nationals, from Aug 1. The system was launched by deputy home minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah during the 103rd Immigration Day celebration, themed 'AI driving immigration reform', held here today. Immigration director-general Zakaria Shaaban said the new system speeds up visa processing by leveraging on artificial intelligence. 'MyVisa 2.0 applies AI in the visa application process, eliminating the need for applicants to visit the office in person,' he told reporters. In a separate statement, the department said MyVisa 2.0 is an enhanced version of the original system introduced on Dec 1, 2021. 'The upgraded platform offers a faster, more secure and efficient visa application process, in line with the public's expectations and the growing demand for accessible government services,' it said. MyVisa 2.0 introduces advanced features such as optical character recognition, real-time notifications, smart automation and a dedicated mobile app for users. The entire visa process is fully digital, from passport scanning and document uploads to virtual interviews, real-time tracking, eVisa approval with QR codes and live chat support. 'Applicants are no longer required to visit Malaysian missions abroad,' the department said.

Hyperscale Data Targets Full Buildout of 340 MW Michigan AI Data Center Campus in 2029

Files $125 Million Shelf Registration to Provide Long-Term Financial Flexibility; No Immediate Capital Raise Planned LAS VEGAS, July 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Hyperscale Data, Inc. (NYSE American: GPUS), a diversified holding company ('Hyperscale Data' or the 'Company'), today announced a strategic development roadmap to fully build out its data center campus in Michigan that is optimized for artificial intelligence ('AI') to 340 megawatts ('MW'). This phased expansion underscores the Company's long-term commitment to supporting AI, machine learning and high-performance computing ('HPC') workloads. The Company currently operates approximately 30 MW of power at the Michigan facility and expects to increase the power capacity to 70 MW over the next 20 months. The full 340 MW buildout is anticipated within 44 months from execution of an agreement with the local utility provider and securing appropriate funding. 'We are building a scalable, AI-centric digital infrastructure platform,' said William B. Horne, Chief Executive Officer of Hyperscale Data. 'As demand for computing power accelerates, our Michigan campus positions us to scale efficiently and profitably to meet that demand.' Shelf Registration Filed to Enable Long-Term Financial Flexibility To support the Michigan expansion and other strategic initiatives, the Company recently filed a shelf registration statement for up to $125 million (the 'Registration Statement'). At this time, Hyperscale Data does not intend to raise capital under this Registration Statement. The Registration Statement provides flexibility to access capital markets over time as construction and development of the Michigan campus continues. Phased Expansion Timeline: The Michigan facility, located on an approximately 34-acre site, currently generates revenue through digital asset mining and by providing colocation and hosting services for the emerging AI ecosystems and other industries. Planned development milestones include: Current Operations: Approximately 30 MW online and operational; Mid-Term Expansion: Add 40 MW by Second Quarter of 2027; and Full Buildout: Additional 270 MW by Third Quarter of 2029, for a total of 340 MW. In February 2025, the Company's indirect wholly owned subsidiary, Alliance Cloud Services, LLC ('ACS'), reached an agreement in principle with the local utility to increase available power to 300 MW. The final letter of authorization is currently under negotiation, and once executed, the full upgrade is expected to be completed within 44 months. Additionally, ACS has reached an agreement in principle with the local natural gas utility to supply an extra 40 MW of power. Positioning for the Future of AI Infrastructure Hyperscale Data's expansion plan is aligned with surging industry demand for purpose-built, high-density compute infrastructure. The Company cites comparable projects such as Applied Digital Corporation's recently announced 250 MW contract with CoreWeave, Inc., which is projected to generate over $7 billion in revenue over 15 years. As the Company enters the second half of 2025, it remains focused on reducing debt, streamlining operations and advancing its strategic transition to a pureplay AI data center platform. For more information on Hyperscale Data and its subsidiaries, Hyperscale Data recommends that stockholders, investors, and any other interested parties read Hyperscale Data's public filings and press releases available under the Investor Relations section at or available at About Hyperscale Data, Inc. Through its wholly owned subsidiary Sentinum, Inc., Hyperscale Data owns and operates a data center at which it mines digital assets and offers colocation and hosting services for the emerging AI ecosystems and other industries. Hyperscale Data's other wholly owned subsidiary, Ault Capital Group, Inc. ('ACG'), is a diversified holding company pursuing growth by acquiring undervalued businesses and disruptive technologies with a global impact. Hyperscale Data currently expects to divest itself of ACG (the 'Divestiture') on or about December 31, 2025, though there can be no assurance that the Divestiture will be completed during 2025. Upon the occurrence of the Divestiture, the Company would solely be an owner and operator of data centers to support HPC services, though it may at that time continue to operate in the digital asset space as described in the Company's filings with the SEC. Until the Divestiture occurs, the Company will continue to provide, through ACG and its wholly and majority-owned subsidiaries and strategic investments, mission-critical products that support a diverse range of industries, including an AI software platform, social gaming platform, equipment rental services, defense/aerospace, industrial, automotive, medical/biopharma and hotel operations. In addition, ACG is actively engaged in private credit and structured finance through a licensed lending subsidiary. Hyperscale Data's headquarters are located at 11411 Southern Highlands Parkway, Suite 190, Las Vegas, NV 89141. On December 23, 2024, the Company issued one million (1,000,000) shares of a newly designated Series F Exchangeable Preferred Stock (the 'Series F Preferred Stock') to all common stockholders and holders of the Series C Convertible Preferred Stock on an as-converted basis. The Divestiture will occur through the voluntary exchange of the Series F Preferred Stock for shares of Class A Common Stock and Class B Common Stock of ACG (collectively, the 'ACG Shares'). The Company reminds its stockholders that only those holders of the Series F Preferred Stock who agree to surrender such shares, and do not properly withdraw such surrender, in the exchange offer through which the Divestiture will occur, will be entitled to receive the ACG Shares and consequently be stockholders of ACG upon the occurrence of the Divestiture.
