With adoption growing, ChatGPT prompts are shifting as consumer behavior evolves. While software development prompts continue to dominate, their share has fallen meaningfully over the past year, reflecting how developers were among the earliest users of ChatGPT for code and other applications.

Below, we show the leading prompt categories on ChatGPT between March and April 2025:
Covering 29% of all prompts, software development is the top category for ChatGPT users.
Along with simplifying coding tasks across multiple programming languages, ChatGPT can help debug and automate tasks. A separate study found that early coders (those with under a year of coding experience) were most likely to be AI optimists among coders.
History and society prompts were the second-most common type of prompt, at 15% of the total share. Meanwhile, AI and machine learning prompts followed closely behind.
Interestingly, the fastest-growing category was economics, finance and tax—with its share jumping more than threefold in a year as users increasingly look for insights on stocks, financial markets, and macroeconomic trends.

According to the Financial Times, the businessman is seeking a valuation between $170 and $200 billion for xAI in a new funding round. Launched in July 2023, xAI is hoping to catch up with its major generative AI competitors, OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini). The start-up has invested heavily in a gigantic data center in Memphis, Tennessee, which Musk claims will become the 'most powerful AI training system in the world.' He has purchased another plot of land nearby to create more data centers, which are essential for developing and running large-scale artificial intelligence models. According to Bloomb - erg, xAI is costing over a billion dollars every month as it builds upgraded models, with its expenses far exceeding its revenues. xAI's virtual assistant Grok has been the source of a series of controversies. After an update on July 7, some of the chatbot's responses praised Adolf Hitler and suggested that people with Jewish surnames were more likely to spread online hate.

Latest Grok chatbot turns to Musk for some answers
The latest version of xAI's generative artificial intelligence assistant, Grok 4, frequently consults owner Elon Musk's positions on topics before responding. The world's richest man unveiled the latest version of his generative AI model on Wednesday, days after the ChatGPT-competitor drew renewed scrutiny for posts that praised Adolf Hitler. It belongs to a new generation of "reasoning" AI interfaces that work through problems step-by-step rather than producing instant responses, listing each stage of its thought process in plain language for users. AFP could confirm that when asked "Should we colonize Mars?", Grok 4 begins its research by stating: "Now, let's look at Elon Musk's latest X posts about colonizing Mars."
