16 drunk drivers arrested during weekend operation
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) arrested 16 drunk drivers during the weekend Drunk Driving Operation in Sunnyside on the evening of May 31.
The operation formed part of the department's ongoing efforts to promote road safety and ensure safe drivers across the city.
The aim was to remove unfit drivers from the roads and reduce the risk of accidents caused by intoxicated driving.
As part of the enforcement:
– 16 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances.
– 10 AARTO 1 infringement notices were issued for road traffic contraventions.
The TMPD said it remains committed to upholding traffic laws and ensuring that all road users can travel safely.
Motorists are reminded of the dangers of intoxicated driving and are urged to make responsible choices behind the wheel.
'The safety of our community is a top priority. These operations will continue throughout the city to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and to promote responsible driving behaviour,' said spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.
On May 31, TMPD officers also conducted a co-ordinated public transport operation at the intersection of R55 and Drakensburg Road in Olievenhoutbosch.
The operation took place in conjunction with officers from the Taxi Unit Task Team and Tactical Response Team, and as a result, 18 public transport vehicles were impounded for operating without the necessary documentation.

The issue of trucks parking on residential roads is inconveniencing residents and causing safety hazards. 'We applaud their time and efforts. Trucks are given several parking fines, which is excellent, but ultimately if they are towed away by metro police the community will be glad if that is done,' said Brijlal. Metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said 80 trucks were fined for illegal parking and causing obstructions. Residents in Wingate Park left without streetlights for two years Wingate Park residents in Pretoria east are fed up after nearly two years of darkness, with 'not a single working streetlight in sight' on Somerset and Riet streets. Wayne Dreyer, who lives on Somerset Street, said the problem has been ongoing for close to 24 months. Despite multiple emails and formal complaints sent to the city, he claims no action has been taken. 'I've sent countless emails, escalated the issue, and still nothing has been done,' he said. Dreyer said the situation has become increasingly dangerous. He added that ongoing roadworks in the area make it especially hazardous to navigate at night without lighting. Dreyer believes it has become a safety risk as they are driving past trenches and around barriers in complete darkness. 'Residents continue to pay their monthly municipal bills without fail and feel neglected by the city. 'We pay a lot every month, and we're not getting the basics in return,' he said. According to Dreyer, the darkness has led to a noticeable increase in crime. 'We're seeing break-ins almost every second week. This has been going on for three months now.' He said he had to spend more money to privately install extra lighting and surveillance equipment. Ward 47 councillor Lida Erasmus confirmed the issue, explaining that budget decisions made after the DA lost control of the metro have worsened service delivery. She said the DA previously approved a budget to capacitate internal teams to do streetlight repairs, instead of relying on expensive contractors. 'The plan was to reduce contractor costs and empower city personnel to carry out maintenance,' she said. However, she said once the DA administration was removed, the allocated budget was reduced and shifted elsewhere. 'That's when the plan fell apart.' Erasmus has also started a petition for the non-functional streetlights in the ward. According to her, 90% of the ward is dark. Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo acknowledged the backlog. 'The city is aware of the streetlight outage and the backlog being experienced across all regions, including Ward 47,' he said. Mashigo confirmed that limited resources are delaying maintenance response times. He said currently, the region is attending to new and outstanding streetlight complaints in line with the city's maintenance schedule. 'Wingate Park, specifically Somerset and Riet streets, is scheduled to be addressed between June 9 and 13. 'The standard turnaround time for a single streetlight complaint is 72 hours, but this hasn't been met due to the backlog,' Mashigo added. Warning: Six armed and dangerous CIT robbers at large in Pretoria A manhunt is underway in Pretoria after six heavily armed suspects escaped following a violent cash-in-transit robbery. Police are urging the public to remain alert as officers intensify efforts to track down the dangerous fugitives, who are considered extremely armed and volatile. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo police arrested five suspects, aged between 35 and 50, soon after they allegedly committed a cash-in-transit robbery in Ekangala, Tshwane on Wednesday. 'Police recovered one of the getaway cars and more than one hundred rounds of ammunition. Police are on the lookout for more than six other suspects.' He said it is reported that the suspects used a BMW to ramp the cash-in-transit van. 'The suspects then bombed the van and took undisclosed amount of cash before speeding off in different cars. The police from Gauteng Highway Patrol responded swiftly and spotted two of the getaway cars, a silver Mercedes Benz and Silver Mazda CX3.' Masondo said a high speed chase ensued. 'While on the N12 Highway, the suspects started shooting at the police and police returned fire. One of the getaway cars was chased until the driver lost control and the suspects jumped out of the car and ran into the mielie field while shooting at the police.' Furthermore, police were joined by private security officers, and the search continued until five suspects were arrested. 'Inside the getaway car, police found scores of ammunition.' He said preliminary investigation revealed that these suspects are out on bail after committing cash-in-transit robberies in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces. 'The search is underway for the suspects who escaped. Those who were arrested are expected to appear before the Margistrate Court on Monday facing charges that include cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder and possession of ammunition.
