Kolkata: RVNL has started preparing the detailed project report for the three-way underpass at Chingrighata after it got a nod from the KMC.
Police had told RVNL traffic blocks at Chingrighata for two weekend nights to bridge the last 366m of the viaduct gap of the Orange Line's Ruby-Sector V section would be granted only after the underpass was built.
The implementing agency of the 29km New Garia-Airport Metro corridor is trying to reason that the underpass would take time to be built and involve complex traffic curbs at the crossing.
The traffic department noted the ground reality in a compiled 'minutes' of an inspection by police and RVNL engineers: "The construction of the underpass may start in Oct-Nov... Completion is estimated to take six months..."
RVNL has been seeking six nights' traffic block at Chingrighata to launch two spans over the crossing to bridge the viaduct gap.
Once this 366m work is done, the Orange Line can be extended from Ruby to Sector V. But with the traffic department refusing to hand over the site, girder-launching at Chingrighata has been stalled since Feb 2. Several meetings and inspections later, police told RVNL the underpass was their biggest priority for pedestrian safety at Chingrighata.
TOI reported on Feb 15 that the extension of Orange Line till Sector V would be stalled till the work on the Chingrighata underpass got underway. Metro is pleading with the traffic department to reconsider its stand. "The underpass will take around a year. Launching spans over Chingrighata can be done in six nights, over two weekends," a railway official said.

NH 66 collapses again at Malappuram, raising safety concerns

MALAPPURAM: The NH 66 at Kooriyad, Malappuram, which had previously collapsed on May 19, caved in once again last night. The protective wall gave way, causing soil and stones to fall onto the nearby service road. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The new collapse occurred just meters away from the spot where the road had given way a few days earlier. Additionally, new cracks have appeared in several sections of the protective wall. As a result of the accident, the service road has further eroded into an adjacent field. The road was constructed by raising soil on a field that floods during rains. The area has been waterlogged since the recent downpours. Allegations have surfaced that the construction proceeded without proper soil testing or a thorough study of the site. An expert team appointed by the Central Government has submitted a report regarding the road collapse, finding design flaws as a major cause. Local residents have staged protests, demanding the demolition of the current road and the construction of a safe bridge in its place. Meanwhile, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, chaired by KC Venugopal, will examine the incident. The committee is scheduled to meet today to discuss the issue and has requested an explanation from the Secretary of the Central Transport Ministry. The PAC has also asked for details regarding the project's alignment and Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Panels set up for fire safety audit, norm compliance

1 2 3 Kolkata: State- and district-level committees had been formed to carry out fire safety audits, ensure regulatory compliance and draft safety guidelines, announced mayor and minister Firhad Hakim on Friday. The committees were set up by state chief secretary Manoj Pant on Thursday following the recent spate of fires in the city and other parts of the state, resulting in the loss of lives and property. The state-level committee will be headed by Hakim, and will include three other state ministers as well as senior state officials. The district committees will be headed by DMs and SPs. The first meeting of the committee would be held on May 28, said Hakim. The committee will conduct fire safety audits of buildings, factories, hotels and other relevant premises, evaluate the extent of structural deviations from the sanctioned building plans and suggest remedial measures, in case of deviations. The teams will examine whether commercial establishments had all the valid licences required for statutory compliance with applicable building and fire safety regulations. They will also assess fire safety infrastructure and the operational efficacy of emergency response systems in commercial and industrial establishments. The panels, which will assess fire safety mechanisms in hotels, restaurants, markets and slums, will check if rooftops were being misused. The state committee will need to submit its report within a month. Different state agencies and the KMC will work in coordination. Responding to KMC councillors, Hakim on Friday said they were coordinating with the fire services department. BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh proposed that the KMC trade licence department should not renew licences of commercial establishments if they were found guilty of not complying with safety rules.
