Most Gulf markets in red on US inflation concerns, rate uncertainty

Arab News7 days ago
DUBAI: Most Gulf markets ended lower on Wednesday as investors weighed US trade policy developments and signs that tariffs may be fueling inflation, while awaiting cues on the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy.
US consumer prices rose at the fastest pace in five months in June, raising concerns that tariffs were beginning to pressure inflation.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said letters notifying smaller countries of their tariff rates would be sent soon.
Saudi Arabia's benchmark index dropped 0.5 percent, hit by a 0.4 percent fall in Al Rajhi Bank. Oil giant Saudi Aramco fell 0.7 percent. About 217.4 million shares changed hands, compared with an average of 314.3 million shares over the previous 10 sessions.
Oil prices — a catalyst for the Gulf's financial markets — fell by about 1 percent, as signs of stronger Chinese crude consumption were outweighed by investor caution about the wider economic impact from US tariffs.
Dubai's benchmark index jumped 1 percent to 5,974 dirhams, having crossed the mark for the first time in nearly 17.5 years. Financial stocks led gains with a 3.7 percent jump in Emirates NBD after concluding 3.9 billion dirhams in syndicated loans for Dubai Metro's Blue Line Project.
Abu Dhabi index added 0.3 percent, helped by a 2.6 percent increase in top lender First Abu Dhabi Bank. Strong bank earnings lifted sentiment across both Abu Dhabi and Dubai financials.
Qatar's stock index inched 0.1 percent lower. In the US, data on Tuesday showed consumer prices rose 0.3 percent in June, in line with forecasts, but the largest gain since January.
Trump, however, reiterated his call for lower interest rates from the Fed, saying that consumer prices remain low. Monetary policy in the Gulf tends to mirror the Fed's moves, given the region's currency pegs to the US dollar.
Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index, which is trading at a near all-time high, dropped 1 percent, weighed by a 5.3 percent slide in tobacco monopoly Eastern Company.
Egypt's progress on structural reforms under an $8 billion International Monetary Fund loan agreement has been mixed, the fund said, citing the public sector's continued dominance of the economy as a problem.

Saudi Arabia launches AI readiness index to accelerate government tech transformation

RIYADH: Saudi government agencies are set to advance artificial intelligence adoption through a new index that measures readiness and supports the development of innovative, data-driven solutions across key sectors. The National Artificial Intelligence Index, inaugurated by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, is designed to assess the maturity of AI implementation across government entities. More than 180 representatives participated in the first measurement cycle, which also aims to provide tailored recommendations and track progress regularly, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The initiative supports broader government targets, including ranking among the top 15 countries globally in AI, top 10 in the Open Data Index, and top 20 in data and AI-related publications under the National Strategy for Data and Artificial Intelligence. AI is projected to contribute $235.2 billion, or 12.4 percent, to Saudi Arabia's gross domestic product by 2030, according to estimates by PwC. 'The index aims to unify government efforts and national priorities in the field of AI and provide the enabling capabilities to enable government agencies to adopt and develop effective and sustainable AI products and solutions that contribute to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030,' SPA said. It added: 'The index is based on three main pillars, seven main axes, and 23 sub-fields to ensure a comprehensive measurement of government agencies' AI readiness.' This forms part of SDAIA's broader mandate as the Kingdom's national authority for data and AI development and regulation. It is intended to strengthen institutional performance and drive public-sector innovation. The newly launched index also provides results reflecting the maturity of AI adoption within government agencies, along with the necessary support to enhance their capabilities and further develop innovative solutions that sustain national efforts and expand their impact in priority sectors. As part of its continuous efforts to improve institutional excellence, SDAIA was recently awarded two international accreditation certificates by the Global Excellence Assembly, a body that specializes in developing and evaluating institutional excellence models. The recognition highlights SDAIA's alignment with international best practices in the design and governance of award models, as well as the transparency and impartiality of its evaluation and selection processes. SDAIA is also engaging the public to shape the future of digital services. The authority earlier this month launched an electronic consultation to gather public opinion on the Ehsan National Platform for Charitable Work, inviting citizens and residents to share their views on which service is most in need of improvement.

Transport Minister launches trial phase of autonomous vehicles

Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of the Transport General Authority (TGA) Saleh Al-Jasser launched today the initial pilot phase of autonomous vehicles in Riyadh. The autonomous vehicles will operate in this phase within a real-world environment, covering King Khalid International Airport and several key locations in Riyadh, which include highways and selected destinations in the city center, state-run news agency SPA reported. The phase is implemented under TGA's direct regulatory and technical supervision. During this stage, the vehicles will transport passengers with a safety officer present in each vehicle to ensure safety and monitor the performance of smart systems under real conditions. This project comes as a result of a complementary partnership among the transport and logistics ecosystem and related entities. These include the Ministry of Interior, the digital economy, space and innovation ecosystem, the Saudi Data & AI Authority (SDAIA), the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA), and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), along with the private sector represented by technology and operations partners Uber, WeRide and AiDriver. The autonomous vehicles are ten times safer than those driven by humans, Al-Jasser said, in an interview with Al Ekhbariya TV channel.

AlUla Launches Summer Fruits Season as Part of 'Khayrat AlUla' Initiative

The Summer Fruits Season started in AlUla on Tuesday as part of the 'Khayrat AlUla' initiative implemented by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). The initiative aims to showcase the region's agricultural diversity and reinforce its connection to the cultural and economic identity of the area. The season is taking place at Al Manshiyah Farmers' Market from July 22 to 28, where local farmers are presenting a variety of fruits for which AlUla is known, including mangoes, grapes, and figs. The event also features participation from local productive families in a festive atmosphere that highlights the authenticity and economic importance of agricultural heritage. The Summer Fruits Season is one of AlUla's most prominent agricultural production periods, with over 4,900 tons produced annually from around 216,000 fruit-bearing trees. The event is part of the broader Khayrat AlUla series, which includes seasons for dates, grapes, citrus fruits and honey. These efforts align with RCU's goals to strengthen food security and develop agricultural communities in line with Saudi Vision 2030. The season contributes to empowering farmers, expanding marketing channels for their produce, and developing sales outlets connected to visitors, fostering long-term sustainability for the region's agricultural sector.
