Pulled muscle rules Economics out of Royal Ascot

RTÉ News10-06-2025
The William Haggas-trained Economics will miss his intended seasonal comeback in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot after meeting with a setback.
The 2024 Irish Champion Stakes winner, who was last seen in action finishing sixth behind Anmaat in the British version of the race at Ascot in October, was a general 5-1 second favourite for next Wednesday's Group One contest.
Haggas confirmed the unfortunate news, telling the Racing Post: "Economics had an awayday at Newbury, where he worked nicely and the most important thing was his scope was clean after the work.
"We were happy with him but we found he had pulled a muscle afterwards, so we've had to back off him since and I'm afraid we've run out of time for Ascot."
Economics does hold an entry in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on 5 July, but his participation for that contest has to be in doubt.

O'Brien's Diego Velazquez strikes Group One gold in Deauville

Diego Velazquez held off a late charge from Notable Speech to come out on top in the Aga Khan Studs Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville. The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt was recently purchased by Sam Sangster and was running for the first time in the family's famous silks under Christophe Soumillon. The bay was running alongside stablemate The Lion In Winter in the Group One, who was joined by Roger Teal's Dancing Gemini in making much of the running throughout the one-mile trip. Diego Velazquez was always travelling well on the outside, however, and threw down his challenge in the final stages to see off a rapid finish on the inner rail from Charlie Appleby's Notable Speech, who was beaten just a head. Dancing Gemini was a further three-quarters of a length back in third. The winning trainer said: "This is a breeding operation that produces very good two- and three-year-olds. He's a superb model, a willing horse, his last run was very good and he really came to himself last week." Diego Velazquez's last run was in the Minstrel Stakes, named in honour of the late Robert Sangster's dual Derby winner who ran in the same colours carried to success at Deauville on behalf of his son. Of that synchronicity, O'Brien added: "The Minstrel Stakes has often proved an excellent stepping stone - it's a sharp 1,400 metres, and you need to be sharp. "If you think about Ballydoyle's history, and the history of these colours with horses like The Minstrel, who could have imagined that we would have a horse running in Mr Sangster's silks? It's just incredible, and I'm so delighted for Sam - truly thrilled. "We thought he might be a horse for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Keeneland and then possibly the Breeders' Cup Mile. He loves fast ground and he's quick. "A lot of money has been spent this week on his stallion career. But sometimes money isn't what matters. What they achieved today - you can't buy that, those are memories." An emotional Sangster was thrilled at his new acquisition's success, telling Sky Sports Racing: "It means a lot, we're so lucky. "MV (Magnier, former co-owner) is one of my oldest and greatest friends and when I came to him with the presentation of buying the horse to stand at the National Stud, he was fully supportive. "We were lucky to buy him and we're even luckier now, that's for sure! "He's an absolutely gorgeous horse, he's so tough, so genuine. He's a phenomenal mover and to be honest, when he came out of his box you could already see him at the stallion barn at the National Stud. "I'm a little lost for words to be honest, but I'm so delighted. He deserved to get that Group One today and I'm just so delighted to be involved with him." Despite defeat Charlie Appleby was still pleased with Notable Speech, who returned to form to an extent having failed to hit the heights of his three-year-old career so far this term. He said: "We're delighted with how the horse ran. Of course it's frustrating to be beaten by so little, but the most important thing is to see him back to his best. The mile is his optimum trip. We tried dropping him back last time - sometimes you need to experiment. "We'll probably go to Canada for the Woodbine Mile, and then head to the Breeders' Cup." Roger Teal, trainer of Dancing Gemini, said: "He really ran exceptionally well. The ground was probably a bit too quick, and perhaps he didn't fully settle in the last 100 metres. It was still a top-class performance. "Once again he showed huge ability, and a Group One win will come soon. He's also entered at Ascot but first we'll go to ParisLongchamp for the Prix du Moulin. "We're hoping to find slightly easier going, that's the next target. He doesn't need it heavy but just ground with a bit more give."

Full Of Life and Cobra Queen complete Tramore festival flourish for De Bromhead

Local trainer Henry de Bromhead enjoyed another fine August meeting at Tramore and when Full Of Life and Cobra Queen provided him with a double on the final day of the festival, it gave him a fourth winner from just 11 runners over the four days. Full Of Life left behind the disappointment of her lifeless effort in April at Wexford by getting off the mark over timber in the Frank King Memorial Maiden Hurdle. Darragh O'Keeffe rode a positive race aboard the de Bromhead-trained six-year-old and there was barely a moment's concern for those who availed of the prohibitive odds. The double was completed by Cobra Queen getting off the mark over fences in the Victoria House Tramore Mares' Beginners' Chase. Littlebiggie set out to make all the running, but O'Keeffe tracked him all the way before taking over two from home and racing clear. Market leader World Of Fortunes met the first all wrong and failed to find any rhythm in her jumping thereafter. She was eventually pulled up. Of the winner, Robbie Power commented: 'It was a good performance. She was very unlucky at Tipperary the last day, but the longer trip definitely suited her today. They went a good gallop on the ground, and it played to her strengths. "She has won a point-to-point and a hurdle too, so she's going in the right direction. She has form on softer ground but is definitely better on this nicer ground - she jumps a lot better on it." The most valuable race on the card was the McCarthy's Irish Bar Lexington Handicap Chase and the Ray Cody-trained Tullyveery Lad benefited from a fine ride by Donagh Meyler. The nine-year-old didn't always travel with the greatest of enthusiasm but Meyler kept him interested and produced him to lead going to the last. A good jump there put him in charge, and he raced away from Arrycan. Big Island was marginally in front when falling two out. The father-and-son team of Ned and Kieren Buckley took the opening race, the Willis Towers Watson Maiden Hurdle, with Migdam. Four times a winner on the Flat, three of which were on all-weather surfaces, he was having just his second run for connections and second over hurdles. Fifth on his first start, the six-year-old travelled sweetly this time, and had just edged to the front, travelling best, when long-time leader Tricksofthetrade fell two out. Deed Pole held every chance at that point but Migdam had plenty left to give and strode away to win convincingly. 'He's a nice horse, but he just needed to learn to settle and to jump because the engine was always there,' said the winning trainer. 'He was highly rated on the Flat and they're often the ideal types to go jumping with because they're fed up with the Flat racing and jumping rejuvenates them. That's what you're hoping for.' Patience paid off in the Frank Gillane Memorial Handicap Hurdle when Surviving Murmansk got off the mark for his career at the 40th time of asking. The seven-year-old came here on the back of a fine effort in defeat at Kilbeggan and was able to build on it. Trained by Jimmy Barcoe and patiently ridden by Harry Sexton, he came from off the pace to collar favourite and long-time leader May Call You Back in the shadow of the post. In the Heinz Pollmeier Memorial Handicap Chase, the Charles Coakley-trained and Shane O'Callaghan-ridden Itsalonglongroad put an 11th career victory on his card. The likeable veteran loves this track, and it showed once more as he led early and then found plenty for pressure when put under heavy pressure from two out. In denying the O'Keeffe-de Bromhead team a third winner of the afternoon, with Lady Rose Hackett, he was winning for the fifth time at this venue. The festival finale was the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares' Bumper and Something Fabulous, ridden by Finn Brickley, continued the good run of trainer John McConnell by denying the gambled-on Run For Mahler in an exciting finish.
