Ray Ray's Hog Pit to open new location in former Wizard of Za shop
The brand's longtime food truck parked outside Ace of Cups is shuttering to make way for a new brick-and-mortar location inside a shared space with sushi chain Fusian at 4214 N. High St. in the Clintonville neighborhood. Fusian was most recently roommates with Wizard of Za, a pizzeria whose Sicilian-style pies garnered a month-long wait during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trapper Johns Livery reopens with new owner after 2024 closure
Closed in January, Wizard of Za was created by Youngstown native Spencer Saylor, who sold his pizza through his Instagram in 2020 and later collaborated with Paceline Restaurants, the owner of Fusian, to move into the Clintonville store. Paceline acquired the Wizard of Za brand in 2022 and expanded with a second location in Dayton that closed last year.
Ray Ray's Clintonville move comes after the brand opened its first full-service restaurant inside a historic Marion building on May 13. Although Ray Ray's is known for food trucks and walk-up eateries, the Marion restaurant marks the brand's first foray into full-service dining. Watch a previous report on the Marion restaurant in the video player above.
The barbecue fleet is currently home to several other central Ohio eateries, like the food truck parked outside Aardvark Wine & Beer in Linworth. The brand also operates a walk-up window at Land-Grant Brewing in Franklinton, a drive-thru in Westerville, and a casual dine-in and pick-up location in Granville.

Ray Ray's Reload, one of the brand's renovated food trucks, was parked outside The Bottle Shop in Victorian Village for most of 2024 before moving in November to Hoof Hearted Brewery in the Short North.
Chef and Ray Ray's owner James Anderson was featured on 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' in 2017, praised for his 'succulent smoked offerings' at the 'one-of-a-kind' barbecue truck. During the episode, Guy Fieri tried Ray Ray's Mangalitsa Brat Burger and St. Louis Spare Ribs.
Ray Ray's new Clintonville shop will open in June.

Domo Sushi, lauded chef's Hayes Valley standby, appears to close suddenly
An in-person battle with a social media influencer that went viral was the downfall of three-month-old Kis Cafe in San Francisco's Hayes restaurant announced last week that it would be closing permanently in light of accusations that the chef had been rude to the influencer. Now, the subsequent media backlash may (or may not) spell the doom of another restaurant affiliated with James Beard-nominated Chef Luke Sung. A Reddit thread on Saturday announced the impending closure of Domo Sushi, a cozy sushi restaurant also nestled in Hayes Valley, a block over from Kis Cafe. Sung's LinkedIn lists him as the 'operator' of Domo. The thread began with a user posting a photo of a piece of paper hung in what appears to be Domo's storefront at 511 Laguna St. It reads: 'Domo is closing. Last service 8-2-2025. Thank you for your support for the last 17 years.' 'According to a staff member, the owners, which also owned recently closed Kis Cafe, let all staff know that yesterday today (sic) (8/2) would be their last day, closing after 17 years,' the caption below the photo, posted by a user named 'ieroec,' reads. The Chronicle attempted to reach out to Sung but was not successful. A Domo employee who was contacted Saturday appeared to confirm that a closure was discussed Saturday morning, but also expressed uncertainty about whether that plan was still active by the evening. 'The owners this morning decided not to close yet,' the employee said, but quickly added: 'We don't know, actually.' Domo has yet to provide an update on the status of its operations on its social media accounts, and the note posted in its storefront notably does not include a reason for the potential closure. But Reddit users have theories. 'Seems a bit odd if a restaurant can't survive two weeks of bad social media PR of a different restaurant,' said one user in a comment on the thread. 'I wonder if it has anything to do with commercial real estate lease jumping significantly last year and they weren't able to negotiate the price,' posted another. 'Maybe it's a retirement thing?' wondered a third. Earlier this month, Sung was ousted as chef and co-owner of Kis Cafe after news of his clash with a food 'microinfluencer,' known on Tik Tok by her handle @karlalobb162, at the establishment went viral. The content creator, whose real name is Karla, posted a video in which she alleged that Sung instigated a hostile interaction between the two, after she showed up at the restaurant for a planned promotional collaboration. Sung, she alleged, dismissed her number of followers as insufficient. Sung has since issued a public apology, which was posted to Kis Cafe's Instagram page. 'It was important for me to first apologize to Karla privately and step away from Kis Cafe before publicly apologizing,' Sung wrote, and acknowledged being 'condescending, hurtful, and intimidating' to the influencer during her visit. Public records show that Sung has leased Domo's space at 511 Laguna since 2007, and appears to own the building that housed Kis Cafe through a trust.

Mooncake Trapp: A Delightful Fusion Of Tradition And Taste
Introduction To The Mooncake Culture Mooncakes are not just desserts; they are a symbol of reunion and tradition. For centuries, families have shared mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival as a token of love and unity. In recent years, the mooncake industry has transformed from traditional to trendy, offering gourmet versions, creative packaging, and international flavors. One such recent innovation is the mooncake trapp , a unique concept that combines the elegance of traditional mooncakes with the novelty of creative presentation and premium branding. Understanding The Mooncake Trapp Concept The term mooncake trapp refers to a sophisticated style of mooncake packaging and presentation, often used by luxury brands or high-end bakeries to elevate the customer experience. Unlike ordinary packaging, it typically includes artistic boxes, drawer-style compartments, LED-lit casings, or even music-box-like mechanics. The goal is to create an unforgettable unboxing experience that matches the taste and quality of the mooncakes inside. This concept appeals to modern consumers who seek more than just flavor. They want aesthetics, emotion, and a sense of occasion. The mooncake trapp delivers all of that by blending tradition with design. Evolution Of Mooncake Packaging Traditionally, mooncakes were wrapped in paper or stored in simple tin boxes. However, the competitive e-commerce market has redefined packaging standards. Businesses now focus on sustainable materials, elegant structures, and interactive experiences. The mooncake trapp stands out in this evolution. It usually incorporates: Sliding compartments or layered boxes Custom motifs, such as rabbits, moons, or lotus flowers Compartments for tea or small gifts Materials like bamboo, velvet, or embossed cardboard Such attention to detail increases the perceived value of the product and turns it into a perfect gift item. Why E-Commerce Brands Prefer Mooncake Trapp The mooncake trapp concept has been widely embraced by e-commerce brands for several reasons: 1. Visual Appeal For Online Shopping When customers shop online, they rely heavily on images. Beautifully packaged mooncakes with intricate box designs naturally draw more attention. Enhanced Customer Experience Consumers are more likely to remember brands that provide a unique experience. The creative and interactive packaging of the mooncake trapp makes it memorable and share-worthy. This leads to word-of-mouth promotion and user-generated content, increasing visibility. 3. Added Value Without Changing Ingredients Improving packaging is a cost-effective way to raise product value without changing the recipe. A well-designed mooncake trapp justifies a higher price tag and creates a premium impression. 4. Ideal For Corporate Gifting Corporations often buy mooncakes in bulk for client and employee gifts. A luxurious mooncake trapp makes a strong impression and reflects positively on the giver's brand. Olmsted Is Closing in Prospect Heights
is the lead editor of the Northeast region with more than 20 years of experience as a reporter, critic, editor, and cookbook author. Chef Greg Baxtrom's standout Prospect Heights restaurant Olmsted will close August 17 after nearly a decade, he announced on Instagram. Olmsted, named for the famous landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted, who shaped the design of public spaces such as Prospect Park and Central Park in New York, opened to much fanfare in 2016. It was in the process of being saved, he said in his post, but efforts fell through. The announcement comes weeks after Baxtrom shuttered nearby Patti Ann's, the midwestern-leaning restaurant and bakery named after his mother. His remaining restaurant, 5 Acres, continues to run at Rockefeller Center. When it debuted, Olmsted 'was originally focused on steak-and-potatoes accessibility. But that isn't quite how it played out,' Eater wrote in sizing up how it became 'the hottest restaurant in Brooklyn' by 2017. A native of Chicago, Baxtrom opened his first restaurant in New York after working at acclaimed restaurants like Mugaritz in Spain, Atera and Per Se in New York, and Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Tarrytown. He once described himself as the '18-year-old with braces' working in the kitchen at Chicago's Alinea — and his Prospect Heights restaurant recently hosted the Alinea pop-up in honor of its 20th anniversary. Olmsted reflects Baxtrom's experiences, incorporating a working garden where diners could enjoy cocktails a stone's throw from live quail. His early menus featured dishes like watermelon sushi, the famous carrot crepe with clams, guinea hen two ways, and desserts like the frozen yogurt with whipped lavender honey. And while prices were more expensive than what had been in the neighborhood, he opened with prices that were 'low' compared to similar caliber restaurants, Pete Wells said in a two-star New York Times review. Baxtrom outlines some of his reasons to close in his Instagram post. 'Deciding to close a restaurant is never based on a single decision, but rather on many factors.' First, he cites his decision to get sober five years ago, when 'it became clear that I needed to prioritize my mental health over the restaurants if I was going to continue living. However, I find it challenging to practice this in real life.' In addition, the funding that would have kept the restaurant afloat fell through. 'If you are someone who appreciated what we created and would be interested in partnering with me to save Olmsted,' Baxtrom says on Instagram, 'please reach out.' Baxtrom told Eater that their pre-COVID expansion had become 'a bit of dead weight,' he says. The plan was to revert the restaurant to its original size. 'It just required investment. Beyond my means.' He also spoke of his hopes that Vanderbilt Avenue would have become more of a destination street, with Akhtar Nawab opening Alta Calidad in 2017, along with Joe Campanale and Erin Shambura opening nearby Fausto in the old Franny's space that same year. 'I hoped more big restaurateurs were going to follow.' Today, 'Vanderbilt is surprisingly a very difficult neighborhood to navigate,' he says. On his Instagram post, he says he has 'no desire to leave the industry I love; it brings me so much joy.' And over DM with Eater, Baxtrom says that perhaps he'd like to eventually open something in Chicago. 'My folks are getting older and I'd like to be there more.' Baxtrom demonstrated through his businesses that he is close with his parents. Patti Ann's that shuttered in July wasn't just an homage in name. It referenced the food he grew up on in his family's suburban Illinois household and featured an interior that nodded to his mother's career as a teacher — complete with a map on the wall as decor, cubbies that his father helped him build, and a report card on the table's performance that came with the check.
