Ex-Broncos offensive coordinator makes interesting career change

USA Today5 days ago
Rich Scangarello is making an interesting career change.
The former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator has joined LIFT Sports, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Thursday. The 53-year-old coach will have a role "mentoring quarterbacks, leading film study sessions and providing coaching support," according to Pelissero.
Scangarello was Denver's offensive coordinator in 2019. Then-rookie quarterback Drew Lock went 4-1 as a starter that year, but then-head coach Vic Fangio fired Scangarello following offseason.
Scangarello went on to have stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers before a stop at the college level, coaching Kentucky's offense and quarterbacks. After a year out of coaching, he served as QBs coach for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024. He has worked with QB prospects leading up to the last two drafts, including Caleb Williams last year.
It sounds like Scangarello will continue working with QBs, but he'll now be employed by an agency.

Two Iowa football stars named preseason All-Americans

The Iowa Hawkeyes are littered with talent up and down their roster on offense, defense, and special teams. With a veteran presence, as they carry most years, the Hawkeyes retained some key contributors for another year and are seeing them receive proper notoriety. Two of those key pieces returning are kick and punt return specialist Kaden Wetjen and offensive lineman Gennings Dunker. Both are expected to continue their success at Iowa with big years in 2025. Wetjen and Dunker helped Iowa win games in 2024, and the same will be expected from them this year. With the expectations on them, both of the Iowa stars have been named Sporting News preseason All-Americans. Both were named to the second team. Kaden Wetjen flashed his magic last year for Iowa on special teams. The return specialist put on a show when he touched the ball and made opponents pay for kicking it to him. Wetjen returned 26 kickoffs, averaging 28 yards per return with a touchdown, and returned 26 punts for 12.6 yards per return with another touchdown. Gennings Dunker figures to be a staple on an Iowa offensive line that could be the catalyst of their success this year. He enters his fourth year with the program with 34 games and 25 starts under his belt. His experience and dependability will be called on by Iowa's offense all season long. ESPN, NFL fantasy football to merge: What it means for your league

ESPN announced Tuesday it had agreed to acquire numerous media assets from the NFL in a landmark agreement. Most notably, ESPN acquired NFL Network and the league's ever-popular RedZone channel, which shows every touchdown from every game, as part of the deal. The NFL will acquire a 10% equity stake in ESPN as part of the deal. ESPN has also acquired the NFL's fantasy football product, making NFL Fantasy a part of ESPN Fantasy Football. What will that mean for fantasy football managers? Here's what we know about that element of the merger as the 2025 NFL season approaches. How ESPN, NFL fantasy football merger will impact leagues ESPN announced it was planning to "merge [the NFL's fantasy product] into its existing platform" after acquiring it from the NFL. That means all NFL Fantasy leagues will eventually be a part of the ESPN Fantasy Football app, and ESPN Fantasy Football will be the official game of the NFL. A timetable for the app merger has not yet been finalized. That said, it seems unlikely to happen before the 2025 NFL season, as the agreements between ESPN and the NFL are subject to approval from both government regulators and NFL owners. Such a delay would allow those using the NFL Fantasy App to continue doing so in 2025. ESPN did not immediately respond to USA TODAY Sports' request for more details about the pending merger of the two products. It's worth noting ESPN changed the interface of its fantasy app on Monday, Aug. 4, one day before the agreement with the NFL was announced. ESPN outlined the changes made to the app for the 2025 fantasy football season, "will provide improved roster management options and a more personalized experience tailored to your teams and leagues." It's unclear whether the pending merger was part of the impetus for the changes, nor is it clear whether the upgrades will facilitate ESPN's eventual integration of the NFL Fantasy App's data into its product.

Iowa football patiently awaiting injury return of key defensive cog

Iowa football is in the midst of its second week of fall camp. On Wednesday, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz caught up with longtime Hawkeye play-by-play voice Gary Dolphin to update how camp is going. Ferentz revealed that Iowa's defensive depth up front has been tested early in camp. "Up front, Jeremiah Pittman's been out. Unfortunately he's coming off a knee repair, so he's still probably a week or two away from going, but it's given other guys an opportunity to get in there and work some. "Obviously, Aaron Graves on one side's pretty solid and then you've got guys like Will Hubert's really done a good job growing, developing. Bryce Hawthorne, young man from South Dakota State's really been impressive. Luke Gaffney. So, we'll have candidates. It's going to be interesting to see how it all develops and we'll get Jeremiah back at some point. I think at the end of the day, that group's going to be fine," Ferentz said. Pittman, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound graduate defensive lineman, was listed as one of Iowa's two starting defensive tackles to begin the spring opposite senior Aaron Graves. Pittman played in all 13 games last season, registering 17 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. The Palatine, Ill., product from St. Viator High School has notched 27 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery in his Hawkeye career thus far. Pittman has played in 26 games in his Iowa career and was a three-star signee per 247Sports in the 2021 class.
