Why the Mihlali Mayambela move to Kaizer Chiefs may not work out

IOL News14-07-2025
Mihlali Mayambela's potential move from Aris Limassol to Kaizer Chiefs faces challenges due to his key role in Cyprus, a high transfer fee, and Limassol's contract renewal option, despite interest from Chiefs and discussions with Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. Picture: Muzi Ntombela, BackpagePix
With the rumours swirling that Mihlali Mayambela may be considering a move from Aris Limassol to Kaizer Chiefs, whether the player will actually make the move back home is now seemingly less likely.
The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana player is currently filling a key role at the club in Cyprus, and a hefty price tag might dissuade the Soweto Giants from making a big move for his signature.
According to Kick Off, Chiefs would have to fork out around R4 million for Mayambela.
The website also reports that Limassol may also invoke the option to renew Mayambela's contract.

Kaizer Chiefs news: Velebayi, Nabi, Djoumekou

Kaizer Chiefs have already completed six signings in what has been a deliberate and strategic off-season. Yet their efforts to bring in Cape Town Spurs duo Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman have stalled, as legal uncertainty clouds the potential transfers. Chiefs maintain that both players are no longer contractually bound to Spurs following the club's relegation from the Premier Soccer League, while the Cape Town outfit insists the agreements remain valid. While the club's legal team navigates the dispute, head coach Nasreddine Nabi continues to focus on shaping his squad for the campaign ahead. The Tunisian, tasked with restoring consistency and competitiveness to the Soweto giants, is pressing on with pre-season preparations. With six new arrivals already in the fold, Chiefs are steadily building a group they believe can compete for domestic honours. In parallel, the club has reportedly been offered the services of Cameroonian striker Ravel Djoumekou, currently playing for FC Saint Eloi Lupopo in the Congolese top flight. The offer has prompted interest within the technical team. 'He is a proven forward who could provide depth and experience,' a source familiar with the discussions said. 'He has been presented as an option, and it will now depend on Chiefs' analysts and scouts to assess whether he meets the technical requirements. Should they choose to proceed, he would be available.' Another source echoed the sentiment, suggesting that Kaizer Chiefs are not done with their transfer dealings. 'The process is ongoing. Some targets are known to the public, others are not. If this particular striker fits the profile, he will certainly be considered. The club remains active as the window stays open.' FIVE talented Kaizer Chiefs leaving the club?

A quintet of youngsters could leave Kaizer Chiefs soon of their fortunes don't turn around sooner rather than later. Manqoba Ozoemena is wanted at AmaZulu. Meanwhile, Mdu Shabalala has plenty to prove. Let the 'Mayele to Kaizer Chiefs' nonsense be a lesson to us all According to local reports, Usuthu want to test Chiefs' resolve to keep talented playmaker Manqoba Ozoemena. 'It's believed that the AmaZulu FC technical team has proposed to management about Manqoba (Ozoemena). Coach Arthur (Zwane) knows him very well, and he believes that the player can help the team this season as they compete in the MTN8 and the other tournaments as well,' said a source familiar with the negotiations. Click for the story At the start of 2024-2025, Mdu Shabalala was a critical component in the Chiefs side, operating from the number 10 role. His output was healthy, too. However, that dwindled dramatically. After 27 league appearances, he scored four goals and claimed a solitary assist. He was limited to a substitute's cameo in Chiefs' Nedbank Cup win over Orlando Pirates. Only a bold man would predict that Mduduzi Shabalala will leave Chiefs in the winter, but his long-term prospects don't look great. The writing isn't on the wall yet, however, and it's up to the player to prove how much he wants to become a legend at the club. 'Chiefs will still finish ninth with their new signings' Chiefs star swaps 95,000 fans for 7,500-seater stadium Mdu or Die in action. Image: @kaizerchiefs / X 14-year-old Reatlegile Mosimane has earned himself a trial at AS Roma. Known for being Pitso's son, the young attacker plundered 38 goals last season. That earned him the top scorer award, as Chiefs won the Gauteng Development League U13 title. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of little-known Ikenna Tladi, the nine-year-old left-footed winger from Wolmaransstad who has signed terms with the Italian side. Click for the story Mfundo 'Obrigado' Vilakazi is still only 19, so time is on his side, but a player of his talent needs to start more games, more often. If Gaston Sirino is slowly phased out of the side, then Vilakazi's route to the first team could be clearer. Meanwhile, stylish 23-year-old holding midfielder Samkelo Zwane might need to look elsewhere for opportunities. Thabo Cele and Sibongiseni Mthethwa are the likely starting pair in midfield, but Siphesihle Ndlovu's arrival and rumours of a move for Lebogang Phiri will have Zwane sweating. Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Ighodaro, Baartman, Velebayi, Siwahla

Kaizer Chiefs are gearing up for the new season, having already signed six new players. The team spent three weeks in the Netherlands for their pre-season, where the new signings got a run. In the five matches played, Amakhosi won just one however, Nasreddine Nabi feels his side gained a lot from those pre-season friendlies. In recent weeks, Chiefs have been linked to Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro. 'At the moment Kaizer Chiefs are waiting on Sundowns,' an insider told Soccer Laduma . 'Ighodaro has one year remaining on his contract with Sundowns and only if they can release him first as a free agent or if they can buy him from the remaining months on his contract. But Chiefs are interested in him and depending on what Sundowns' decision is, then Chiefs would still sign him before the start of the season.' Kaizer Chiefs reportedly signed Luke Baartman and Asanele Velebayi from Cape Town Spurs, but the Urban Warriors have taken the club to court. With Spurs' relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the amateur level, there's an argument made that the players have become free agents since they no longer play in the professional leagues. Former Ajax Cape Town attacker Mkhanyiseli Siwahla warned the duo of taking wrong advice. 'I understand that these boys are excited about big teams wanting them, but it's a mistake I also made,' he told KickOff . 'First of all, they must be careful of agents, as they only care about you when you are a star. Baartman and Velebayi were very young when they came at Ikamva; they were just 11 years old. Spurs groomed them, so they need to show respect and follow the proper procedures. 'Agents must start respecting teams that develop these players. If you are a true agent, you will acknowledge that. 'Agents should involve team owners in every decision they make about players because it is the team owners who have helped groom these athletes. 'The misunderstanding here has been caused by agents. It's all about communication. Kaizer Chiefs will never contact you directly to express interest; it's always the agents who act as intermediaries. 'When this happens, the team may perceive it as disrespect from the players, and they will be hesitant to support the players' moves. 'Understandably, teams feel this way because you cannot disrespect those who helped you become the star you are today. 'The only thing that needs to improve is communication between the agent and the selling team.'
