Are Kolkata's rooftop restaurants getting closed? Here is what the Mayor says
By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on May 3, 2025, 14:07 IST
In the wake of the recent Barabazar fire that claimed 14 lives, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has announced a sweeping crackdown on rooftop restaurants and illegal commercial structures atop buildings. Citing safety violations and invoking Section 117(4) of the KMC Building Rules, 2009, the civic body will now issue formal shutdown notices to rooftop restaurant operators across the city.
Mayor Firhad Hakim, while confirming the move, stated, 'A roof, like a staircase, is not owned by anyone and cannot be sold. Rooftops are meant for common use. Commercial use is illegal.' He added that failure to comply with the notice will result in strict legal action and immediate closure. View this post on Instagram

The Mayor also revealed that KMC has sought assistance from the Kolkata Police to identify and act against such setups. A monitoring committee is being formed to oversee the enforcement. 'As per the KMC notification, there will be no rooftop restaurants in Kolkata,' Hakim emphasized.
Earlier, Business Upturn reported that six well-known restaurants inside Magma House on Park Street were shut down following a surprise inspection by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. During her visit, Banerjee cited serious fire safety lapses and described the building as a 'tinderbox.'
Kolkata crackdown: Six Park Street restaurants shut after Mamata Banerjee terms Magma House a 'tinderbox'
According to a report by TaazaTV , Banerjee's unannounced visit came just two days after the Hotel Rituraj fire in Burrabazar. At 24 Park Street, she pointed out narrow staircases, limited exits, and the dangerous use of LPG cylinders in multiple eateries. Following the inspection, Kolkata Police confiscated gas cylinders, and six establishments—LMNOQ, Barbeque Nation, Black Cat, Moti Mahal, Destination 16, and another unnamed restaurant—were forced to halt operations.
Banerjee has since instructed the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the KMC Mayor, and the State Fire Minister to launch an urgent fire safety investigation, stating firmly, 'Public safety cannot be compromised.'

Located at 2344 Wildwood Road in Gibsonia, British Swim School Pittsburgh invites families and community members to join its grand opening celebration on Sunday, June 22 from 1-4 p.m. The event will feature a raffle for a free month of swim lessons, food trucks, face painting, a fire truck visit, staff lifeguards available to oversee open swim time in the pool, facility tours and a special ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the occasion. British Swim School Pittsburgh is proudly owned and operated by Becky Grindle, Ryan Grindle and Traci Brown. Recognizing the need for greater access to swim lessons across all age groups, they are opening their newest British Swim School just as summer reaches its peak - a time when families and individuals visit lakes and pools to cool off. "We are thrilled to be celebrating the grand opening of our newest British Swim School in Pittsburgh," said Becky Grindle, franchise president of British Swim School Pittsburgh. That's why our commitment through British Swim School goes beyond just teaching swim strokes. We strive to build water safety awareness for individuals of all ages." For more than 40 years, British Swim School has been committed to drowning prevention. Most recently, it became the first full swim school franchise to partner with Stop Drowning Now, a nonprofit dedicated to saving lives through water safety education. Tesla stock higher on robotaxi momentum, Musk-Trump feud cooling
Tesla (TSLA) stock is charging higher for a third trading session in a row as the company's robotaxi rollout gains steam — and the war between CEO Elon Musk and President Trump cools off. On Monday night, Tesla was listed as an autonomous vehicle (AV) operator on Austin's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website, ahead of the reported June 12th targeted start of Tesla's robotaxi service. The news was first picked up by Tesla blog Teslarati. Tesla stock up about 2% in early trade, poised for third straight up session. Tesla was listed with Alphabet's Waymo, Amazon's Zoox, Hyundai's Motional, and a few others on the current list of AV operator in Austin, Though Tesla's June 12th start date isn't official, and the company could delay the start due to other circumstances, Tesla's listing on the DMV site is seen as a positive momentum for the start to begin imminently. Tesla will begin its unsupervised robotaxi testing with around 10 to 20 robotaxis at first and will ramp up if testing goes smoothly. Tesla will use remote tele-operators in the event that a robotaxi has an incident or is stuck in a traffic situation, allowing human intervention when needed. While this is a welcome safety initiative, it may hinder any ramp-up Tesla's robotaxi fleet. Musk's closeness to Trump was seen as boon for its robotaxi ambitions, but the recent war of words between the two sank Tesla stock late last week, and it's only now recovering. Part of today's recovery in the stock came as Trump made some conciliatory comments about Musk and Tesla on Monday after the bell. 'I'd have no problem with it,' Trump said at White House event on Monday, when asked if he would be willing to speak with Musk. 'I'd imagine he wants to speak with me.' Trump also revealed he wasn't going to sell the Tesla Model S he bought in March, following the unprecedented event where Musk brought a fleet of Tesla EVs to the White House for Trump's perusal. Trump also said, when asked whether he knew Musk was taking drugs, that he really didn't know. 'I don't think so, I hope not,' Trump said. Pras Subramanian is a reporter for Yahoo Finance. Country singer Conner Smith hits, kills woman walking dog in crosswalk, police say
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A woman was killed when she was hit by a vehicle while walking a dog in the Germantown neighborhood of Nashville Sunday night. Investigators have identified the driver as 24-year-old Conner Smith, a country singer and Nashville native. According to local police, 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins was walking from a dog park and was in a crosswalk when she was hit by a pickup truck. Dobbins was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died. Investigators believe Smith was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck north on Third Avenue North as Dobbins was crossing when he hit her around 7:30 p.m. Police said Smith showed no signs of impairment. The preliminary cause of the crash was Smith 'failing to yield the right of way' to Dobbins, the agency said in a release. As of Monday, no charges had been filed. 'On June 8th, Mr. Smith was involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life. His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins' family during this incredibly difficult time. Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation,' Smith's attorney said in a statement to Nexstar's WKRN. Photos from a performance in Nashville were posted to Smith's official Instagram page Sunday, but there was no statement on the crash. Smith appeared to be back in his hometown for CMA Fest, a country music festival that took place over the weekend. His most popular songs include 'Creek Will Rise' and 'I Hate Alabama.'
