In the wake of the recent Barabazar fire that claimed 14 lives, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has announced a sweeping crackdown on rooftop restaurants and illegal commercial structures atop buildings. Citing safety violations and invoking Section 117(4) of the KMC Building Rules, 2009, the civic body will now issue formal shutdown notices to rooftop restaurant operators across the city.
Mayor Firhad Hakim, while confirming the move, stated, 'A roof, like a staircase, is not owned by anyone and cannot be sold. Rooftops are meant for common use. Commercial use is illegal.' He added that failure to comply with the notice will result in strict legal action and immediate closure. View this post on Instagram

The Mayor also revealed that KMC has sought assistance from the Kolkata Police to identify and act against such setups. A monitoring committee is being formed to oversee the enforcement. 'As per the KMC notification, there will be no rooftop restaurants in Kolkata,' Hakim emphasized.
Earlier, Business Upturn reported that six well-known restaurants inside Magma House on Park Street were shut down following a surprise inspection by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. During her visit, Banerjee cited serious fire safety lapses and described the building as a 'tinderbox.'
Kolkata crackdown: Six Park Street restaurants shut after Mamata Banerjee terms Magma House a 'tinderbox'
According to a report by TaazaTV , Banerjee's unannounced visit came just two days after the Hotel Rituraj fire in Burrabazar. At 24 Park Street, she pointed out narrow staircases, limited exits, and the dangerous use of LPG cylinders in multiple eateries. Following the inspection, Kolkata Police confiscated gas cylinders, and six establishments—LMNOQ, Barbeque Nation, Black Cat, Moti Mahal, Destination 16, and another unnamed restaurant—were forced to halt operations.
Banerjee has since instructed the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the KMC Mayor, and the State Fire Minister to launch an urgent fire safety investigation, stating firmly, 'Public safety cannot be compromised.'

3 tips to help your startup survive the age of AI, from Anthropic's product chief

Anthropic's Mike Krieger advised startups to focus on domain expertise and customer relations. Startups in law or biotechnology can offer value beyond large language models, he said. Krieger suggested exploring new AI interfaces to avoid becoming simple AI model add-ons. Trying to avoid becoming part of the "OpenAI killed my startup" meme? Anthropic's chief product officer has some advice. In an episode of "Lenny's" podcast published on Thursday, Mike Krieger said three key qualities can help startups defend themselves from being taken over by AI giants and stay "defensible" for at least the next one to three years. First, Krieger said startups with deep knowledge of areas like law or biotechnology can survive AI giants. For example, he said that he doesn't see Anthropic building a solution for scientific labs. "But I want that company to exist and I want to partner with it," he said. Second, Krieger said a good relationship with customers can help. "Don't just know the company you're selling to, but know the person you're selling to at the company," he said, referring to advice from one of Anthropic's product leads. It's also helpful to come from the domain yourself, or bring on a cofounder "who came from that world," he said. Krieger's third suggestion was for startups to play with new AI interfaces. "Do something that feels very advanced user, very power user, very weird and out there at the beginning, but could become huge," he said. Krieger cofounded Instagram in 2010 and was its chief technology officer until 2018. He later cofounded the news-aggregating app Artifact, which was shut down last year. He joined Anthropic last year. "I don't envy them," he said about founders wanting to build in the AI space. "Maybe that's part of the reason why I wanted to join a company rather than start one." Kriger did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours. Krieger's comments are part of an ongoing debate in the startup community about how founders can avoid building AI "wrappers" — a dismissive term used to refer to simple applications that are built on top of existing AI models and can be easily offered by LLM companies themselves. Last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said his company would "steamroll" any startup building "little things" on top of its model. He said that companies who underestimate the speed of AI model growth risk becoming part of the "OpenAI killed my startup meme." Krieger has made several recent comments about the future of work and how people can AI-proof their careers. In an interview earlier this year, Krieger said developers would be spending more time double-checking AI-generated code than writing it themselves. Late last month, Krieger said that he still has "some hesitancy" about hiring entry-level workers and that Anthropic is focused on hiring experienced engineers instead. Billie Eilish Brother Finneas Tear-Gassed At ICE Protest

Finneas O'Connell has revealed that he was tear-gassed while attending a recent protest against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department's raids. The protests, which took place over the weekend, saw people campaigning against ICE's raids of numerous workplaces in LA while searching for alleged immigration violations. On Friday, over 40 people were arrested in a raid, with LA Mayor Karen Bass telling reporters, 'ICE initiated enforcement actions on several workplaces. That created a sense of chaos, outrage, fear, and terror because people are very worried as to what happened to their families.' President Donald Trump then deployed 2,000 National Guard soldiers to LA to put an end to the protests, which led to numerous attendees being tear-gassed. Finneas, who is the elder brother of singer Billie Eilish, wrote on his Instagram stories: 'Tear gassed almost immediately at the very peaceful protest downtown- they're inciting this.' Finneas went on to share a series of posts condemning the ICE raids — and he certainly isn't the only celebrity to do so. Hilary Duff reposted a message from writer, podcaster, & content creator Whitney Alese, which read, 'Masked men abducting people off the street, from their jobs, from their cars, from graduations is not ok. Forcing toddlers & young children to represent themselves in court is not ok. Snatching people when their lawyers are in the bathroom is not ok. Having children come home to an empty house bc their guardians were snatched up is not ok. Arresting law abiding folks at their immigration hearing is not ok. Don't normalize this. Don't look away. Don't stay silent.' Renée Rapp wrote on her Instagram story, 'fuck ICE fuck this administration fuck all of yall who are complicit in ensuring that this happened this is a fucking disgrace.' Meanwhile, celebrities like Florence Pugh, Chrissy Teigen, Eva Longoria, and Gracie Abrams reshared a series of posts fiercely condemning the ICE raids. Good on those who are speaking out. We'll keep you posted as more unfolds.
