Sarawak deploys over 202,000 artificial reefs to safeguard marine life
MIRI (Aug 14): The Sarawak Marine Department has deployed 202,049 artificial reef units over the past two decades to protect marine life and deter illegal trawling, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He said the RM20 million programme under the 12th Malaysia Plan also enhances fishermen's safety by providing Global Positioning System (GPS) devices and Personal Locator Beacons (PLB), benefitting nearly 300 fishermen statewide.
In Lawas, 64 recreational artificial reef balls have been installed in local waters as part of the same conservation initiative.
Since 1991, Lawas has seen the deployment of five types of artificial reefs, including 11,018 units made from old tyres, 200 concrete reef balls, one sunken vessel, 57 soft-bottom concrete reefs, and 80 concrete reef structures serving as trawler barriers.
Across Sarawak, artificial reef deployment by the Marine Fisheries Department dates back to 1984.
'This year alone, the department has been allocated RM3.7 million for reef construction across Sarawak waters,' Awang Tengah said in a speech read by Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong during the launch of the Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department's Recreational Fishing Boats for Kampung Punang and Awat-Awat in Lawas on Tuesday.
Also present were Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department senior director Abdul Rahman Wahab, Lawas district officer Ladin Atok, and other guests.

6 dead after light aircraft crashes in Kenyan capital
Crashes involving light aircraft are relatively common in eastern Africa. (EPA Images pic) NAIROBI : A small plane carrying medical staff crashed in a densely-populated neighbourhood in Kenya's capital this afternoon, killing six people, local authorities said. The Cessna plane, run by Amref Flying Doctors, came down as it was flying to Hargeisa, the capital of Somalia's breakaway territory of Somaliland, the charity said in a statement. Kiambu county commissioner Henry Wafula said the four people on board and two people on the ground were killed. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the plane took off from Wilson Airport at 2.14pm and lost contact with air traffic control three minutes later. 'We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance mission,' KCAA said in a statement. One witness, who asked not to be named, told Reuters she heard a loud sound, then saw a fireball and debris scattered over the neighbourhood. Unverified videos shared on social media showed firefighters trying to douse burning debris inside what appeared to be a residential compound. Crashes involving light aircraft are relatively common in eastern Africa. In April last year, Kenya's military chief was among 10 people killed when their military helicopter crashed shortly after take-off.

Seven international reciters at 65th Quran Assembly in Kuala Lumpur
KUALA LUMPUR: Seven international participants will showcase their recitation skills tonight at the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA), held at the World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur. The session opens with Mozambique's Zacarias Nuro, followed by Brunei's Amal Nazirah Haji Asmat, the Philippines' Jassim Bacarat Hadji Daud, and Iran's Mohsen Ghasemi.
