#SHOWBIZ: A boy's magical friendship adventure

THE title of this movie sounds remarkably close to one from Disney about a flying elephant, but its only animals are three adorable goats belonging to the hero's best friend.
Welcome to 'Jumbo', Indonesia's most talked-about movie this year, and the region's best-selling animated movie to date.
The title character's name isn't Jumbo, but Don (voiced by Prince Poetiray), and Jumbo is a nickname given to him by Atta (Muhammad Adhiyat), his biggest tormentor in school and the neighbourhood.
Don is a chubby and awkward 10-year-old boy who loves fairy tales and one day meets a real fairy.
This fantasy directed by Ryan Adriandhy in his directorial debut comes to Malaysian cinemas three months after its Indonesian debut on March 31, and features popular singers Bunga Citra Lestari and Ariel Irham of Noah as the protagonist's late parents.
Don, who is often belittled by his schoolmates because of his large size and clumsiness, inherits a book from his parents, filled with illustrations and magical stories.
Entirely crafted by Don's parents who perished in an accident when he was 4, the book serves as an escape for Don in a world that feels unwelcoming due to the insults by his neighbours and schoolmates.
One day, Don decides to prove himself participating in a community talent show — he plans to perform a play inspired by the stories in the book.
Atta steals the book, but fortunately, Don has the support of his wise grandmother (who looks after him) and his best friends — goofy Nurman (Yusuf Ozkan) who lives with his goat-breeding grandfather, and Mae (Graciella Abigail) who is level-headed and street-smart.
Don soon meets Meri (Quinn Salman) a sweet fairy who asks for his help to find her parents.
They strike a deal — Meri decides to help Don improve his presentation and recover his book, while Don has to help Meri find her parents and defeat their captor.
Thus begins an adventure full of wonders, transforming Don's view of himself and teaching him the meaning of friendship, courage and self-confidence.
In terms of animation, 'Jumbo' is as good as Malaysia's 'Upin & Ipin', 'Boboiboy', 'Mechamato' and 'Ejen Ali', and here's hoping that the republic's animation industry continues to grow stronger.
Each character has superb and realistic facial expressions, movements and gestures, and the director based them on real life activities performed by the cast members.
And the movie's settings look very much like Jakarta's suburbia, only neater and more colourful.
Don may look adorable but honestly, he is rather annoying — he is selfish until he gets to know Atta after meeting his crippled elder brother Acil (Angga Yunanda), a hard-working electronic goods repair man.
The real heroes are his best friends, his grandmother (Ratna Riantiarno) and Meri, who teaches him to be brave, caring and sharing.
Getting to know Atta awakens him to his own flaws and the mutual reconciliation that follows finally makes him a hero.
The villain, Pak Rusli (Kiki Narendra), is two-dimensional as his motive for villainy is childish.
His late wife's grave was destroyed by a developer, and that turned him into a malevolent ghostbuster who destroys graves and captures ghosts including Meri's parents.
Flaws aside, 'Jumbo' is a timeless and heartwarming story for the whole family, which contains magic for the young and human values for the adults.
Viewers will realise that there is a bit of Don and Meri in everyone — he is the everyman who needs to break out of his comfort zone, and she is our higher self that loves, gives and grows.
'Jumbo' is a wholesome animated story that places strong emphasis on family, friendship and being independent, brave and selfless.
Malaysians ought not to miss it, and it is best that they bring their families along to the cinemas.

Truly a memorable night as Atilla Haron and Salamiah Hassan delivers an unforgettable night at their sold-out concert

Fans were fully immersed at the Plenary Theatre at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), which overflowed with warmth, joy, and music as beloved Malaysian songstress Atilia Haron shared the spotlight with her mother, the nation's legendary voice Salamiah Hassan, in the sold-out 'Gelombang Bahagiaku' concert. From the very first note to the final bow, the audience was treated to a heartfelt journey across generations, where every song felt like a heartwarming love letter — from mother to daughter, from stage to fans. For Atilia, the concert was not just a performance, but the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. 'Since I was little, I dreamed of being like mama. To finally share a stage with her, in front of a full house… it still feels surreal. We started this project with no sponsors, but with the love and support of friends, family, and our incredible band, we made it happen. I will carry this night in my heart forever,' she said with emotion. For Salamiah, the evening was pure joy. 'Singing with my daughter for the entire concert… that's the greatest gift I could ever receive. I'm so happy and grateful. I hope we can do this again, and again,' she said, her eyes shining. Atilia opened the night with 'No Fruits For Today', followed by heartfelt numbers such as 'Old Love' and 'Rekah', an emotional medley of 'Bodoh' and 'Cinta Sampai Mati', and a high-energy collaboration with MonoloQue on 'Kekanda Adinda'. She also delivered her signature 'Bahagiaku', before teaming up with musician Jason Voo for 'Salah Sangka', 'Sangkar', 'Sudah' and 'Selagi'. Salamiah brought her unmatched charm and versatility, moving effortlessly from the upbeat 'I'm So Excited' to the poignant 'Surat Terakhir', a nostalgic medley of 'Miang Miang Keladi' – 'Kau Dan Alasanmu' – 'Antara Dua Kasih', the jazzy 'Frim Fram Sauce', a romantic duet with Hardy Arbi on 'Berdebar-Debar Rasa Hati', and her evergreen 'Kenang Daku Dalam Doamu'. Special guest Mimifly added her own flavour with a 'Sahabat' – 'Angkat' medley, before Salamiah returned with 'Superstar', 'Semut Semut Di Titian Usang', 'Menghitung Hari', 'If You Go Away' and her legendary 'Gelombang'. The finale — the first-ever mother-daughter duet 'Age Is Just The Number' brought the house to its feet, before the joyous, all-star performance of 'Empat Dara' with Mimifly and Elvira Arul wrapped the night in pure celebration. 'When we looked into each other's eyes while singing, it felt like time stopped. That moment… I had been waiting for it my whole life,' Atilia shared. And Salamiah then added tenderly: 'I could see the love and fire in Atilia's eyes. That's when I thought — this is what happiness truly is." The love from the audience was as incredible as the music itself. Concert merchandise — specially designed t-shirts limited to 100 pieces were sold out in a flash. 'It's our first time creating merchandise. Seeing our fans wearing the t-shirts, smiling, and taking pictures with us, it was priceless,' said Atilia. As a true icon, Salamiah also offered her thoughts on the next generation of singers. 'Today's young artists are so talented — they write their own music, they study their craft. Even after 55 years in this industry, I'm still learning. Because art… is a journey with no finish line,' she reflected. Closing the evening, Atilia shared her renewed passion for music after focusing on her yoga business in recent years. 'Next year, I want to do more shows. I've missed the stage so much. Tonight proves that when you combine music with family love — it's just pure magic,' she said with conviction. The 'Gelombang Bahagiaku' concert was more than a night of songs — it was a living testament to the power of love, legacy, and music that knows no generational boundaries.

84-year-old granny goes viral playing pickleball in baju kurung

AN 84-year-old Malaysian grandmother has become an internet sensation after footage of her energetically playing pickleball while dressed in traditional baju kurung captured the hearts of social media users nationwide. The heartwarming video, shared by TikTok user @zankraze, showcases the spirited senior citizen, affectionately known as 'Opah,' enthusiastically participating in the popular racquet sport alongside her family members at an indoor court facility. According to the video caption, Opah receives coaching guidance from her grandson Zakwan, who helped her navigate the game's techniques and strategies during their family sporting session. The TikTok uploader expressed admiration for his grandmother's abilities, commenting: 'Yeah she still look sharp and good reflex action. Semangat tetap semangat'. Social media users have been particularly impressed by Opah's athletic coordination while wearing the traditional Malay dress. TikTok user @jawahirahmadhatta noted: 'Tak banyak bergerak kaki hand swing bagus' (Not much leg movement but good hand swing technique). What makes this video especially captivating is witnessing Opah's confidence and concentration as she grips her racquet and strikes the ball, all while elegantly dressed in her complete baju kurung outfit. The footage demonstrates that age and traditional attire need not be barriers to enjoying recreational sports and staying physically active. Opah's enthusiastic participation has inspired viewers across generations, proving that sporting enjoyment transcends age boundaries. The viral video has sparked conversations about senior citizen fitness and the importance of intergenerational family activities, with many netizens praising the family's commitment to including their elderly member in recreational pursuits. Pickleball, a paddle sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has been gaining popularity among Malaysian players of all ages due to its accessibility and lower physical impact compared to traditional racquet sports. Opah's story serves as an inspiring reminder that maintaining an active lifestyle and embracing new experiences remains possible regardless of age, cultural dress preferences, or physical limitations. The positive response from social media users highlights Malaysia's appreciation for elderly citizens who continue pursuing active, engaging lifestyles while honoring their cultural traditions through their choice of attire.
