Rupee falls for second straight day amid likely outflows; opens at 85.75/$

Indian Rupee opened lower for the second straight day on Tuesday amid renewed foreign outflows and a recovery in the dollar index.
The domestic currency opened 16 paise lower at 85.75 against the greenback, after closing at 85.59 on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg. The currency has depreciated by 0.56 per cent so far this week.
The Indian Rupee depreciated on Tuesday after a brief spell of range-bound trading, driven by a stronger dollar and renewed foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows from equities, according to Amit Pabari, managing director at CR Forex Advisors. Global funds have been on a selling spree in domestic equities for the last three sessions.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) remains well-positioned to step in, with a comfortable reserve buffer of $693 billion, limiting the scope for any sharp rupee depreciation, he said. "Additionally, robust domestic bond issuances are supporting the rupee."
The rupee is expected to open flat today, with near-term weakness likely, Bhansali said. Market participants are closely watching the RBI's actions around the 85.70 level, which it has been defending in recent days, he added.
The Dollar Index rose on Tuesday after the US April JOLTS report showed a surprise increase in job openings, beating market expectations. The uptick in the job openings rate further supported the greenback. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.01 per cent at 99.21.
India's Services and Composite PMI will be the key data scheduled for release today. The dollar-rupee pair is expected to trade within a range, with strong resistance near 86.00–86.20 levels and immediate support around 85.00–85.20 levels, Pabari noted.
All eyes will be on the RBI's six-member monetary policy committee (MPC), which will begin its meeting today and is expected to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.75 per cent. The committee is scheduled to announce its policy review on Friday.
In commodities, crude oil prices traded lower after a two-day rise following OPEC's latest decision to increase supply. Brent crude price was down 0.32 per cent to $65.42 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were 0.36 per cent lower at 63.18, as of 09:08 AM IST.

Sensex Up By 700 Points After RBI Cuts Repo Rate By 50 Basis Points

Mumbai: The Indian benchmark indices surged on Friday after the RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announced a jumbo 50 bps rate cut — from 6 per cent to 5.5 per cent — and a 100 basis point cut in the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), from 4 per cent to 3 per cent. The immediate effect of the decision was seen on the Indian stock market. The BSE Sensex index was at 82,198, up 756 points or 0.93 per cent. The Nifty50 was at 24,508, up 257 points or 0.99 per cent. In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap and the Nifty SmallCap indices were up 1.2 per cent and 0.8 per cent, respectively. In the Sensex pack, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Kotak Mahindra Bank and IndusInd Bank were the top gainers. Sun Pharma, Infosys, Nestle India and HCL Tech were the top losers. 'The change in monetary stance from accommodative to neutral also indicates that more rate cuts are unlikely unless the situation warrants. The credit growth that this rate cut will hopefully stimulate will compensate for the dip in margins,' said Dr VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Ltd. Madhavi Arora, Chief Economist, Emkay Global, said that the RBI appears to have front-loaded all policy actions, be it higher-than-expected rate cuts or infusing durable albeit staggered liquidity via lower CRRs. 'All of that now implies that the ball is in the banks' court to transmit easier financial conditions faster,' Arora mentioned. Earlier, the domestic benchmark indices opened flat ahead of the key RBI MPC decision, as buying was seen in the IT and PSU Bank sectors in the early trade. India VIX declined by 4.21 per cent to 15.08, suggesting that the market is pricing in lower volatility in the near term.

Auto stocks gain as RBI cuts repo rate by 50 bps

Equity markets witnessed a rise in stocks after the Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) cut the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent and reduced the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points in a phased manner. This marks the third rate cut in 2025, following 25 basis points each in February and April. The automotive sector responded positively to the policy shift, driven by expectations of improved financing conditions and easing borrowing costs. The CRR cut, which will release ₹2.5 lakh crore into the banking system, is expected to improve liquidity and vehicle loan availability , particularly in the entry and mid-level segments. The S&P BSE Index rose 1.26 per cent following the news in the intraday trade, while Nifty Auto index too climbed 1.23 per cent. Ashok Leyland and Hero MotoCorp were among the top gainers. Other rate-sensitive stocks posted gains too, as the Nifty Realty and Financial Services indices were up nearly 3 per cent and 1 per cent, respectively. Lower interest rates and the forecast reduction in consumer price inflation to 3.7 per cent for FY26 are anticipated to support vehicle affordability and boost consumer sentiment. The sector is also positioned to benefit from expected increases in private consumption and demand ahead of the festive season. Analysts noted that with easing credit conditions and improved liquidity, sectors like auto, housing, and banking are likely to see increased momentum in the coming months.
