Shooting of Bengali film stalled in fresh impasse between directors and technicians
In a fresh standoff between a section of directors and technicians belonging to the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, the shooting of a Bengali film was stalled on Monday as none among the crew turned up at the location in Kolkata.
Expressing frustration over the development, director Kinshuk Dey said 85 per cent of the shooting of the film 'Harry Om' had been completed in the past one year amid disruptions and setbacks and only 15 per cent was left.

'Though as per the practice we had given 'call time' to everyone - actors and the crew - none of the technicians turned up at the location at Baghajatin area in Jadavpur today. I had the hunch this is going to happen as there was no response when I posted the call time on our WhatsApp group last night,' Dey said.
Some of the technicians might have some emergencies, but no alternate names were suggested as is the practice, the director said.
Dey was among the 14 Bengali film directors who had filed petitions at the Calcutta High Court on the issue of alleged interference by the Federation in deciding the names and number of technicians in their film projects.
The charge was denied by the Federation President Swarup Biswas who accused the directors of insulting the federation and technicians.
He said this was not new as the shooting of a feature film by director duo Abhijit Guha and Sudeshna Roy had similarly been affected before a rapprochement could be arrived.
Voicing helplessness over the situation, actor-director Anirban Bhattacharya said, 'We asked for some queries only and are yet to get any reply in the past one year. If technicians do not come, it will affect them economically,' he said.
Dey and Bhattacharya said the directors have sought an audience with the Information and Cultural Affairs Secretary on Tuesday to settle the matter.

'We will seek the government's guidance and suggestion to wriggle out of the situation,' Bhattacharya added.
In the past one year, the shooting of several directors like Srijit Roy and Rahool Mukherjee had suffered temporary setbacks on the same issue before being resolved.
Biswas, when contacted, said he had no idea about the disruption of the shooting of Dey's upcoming movie as shootings of countless other feature films, OTT series, and TV soaps were continuing as usual.

Actor Saswata Chatterjee, in a recent interview, distanced himself from 'The Bengal Files' controversy, stating that he is not a historian, but just an actor. Emphasising that he cannot check the political correctness of a story, he added that he was unaware of why the title was changed from 'The Delhi Files' to 'The Bengal Files'.His comments come at a time when the makers of 'The Bengal Files' are facing multiple FIRs over the depiction of the 1946 riots. Also, the trailer launch event in Kolkata was cancelled over alleged "political pressure." 'The Bengal Files' drew sharp criticism over the portrayal of Gopal Mukherjee, a renowned Bengali freedom fighter, who had a pivotal role in stopping the 1946 riots and the atrocities on Hindus. His grandson, Shantanu Mukherjee, filed a complaint against director Vivek Agnihotri, claiming distortion of an interview with The Wall, Chatterjee stated that he is not a historian to pass comments on whether a film is misinterpreting history. "I am just an actor. I liked a character and I played it. I am not a historian to think about what history says and this is distorting history. It's not my job. New Delhi: Megastar Chiranjeevi has stepped in to mediate the ongoing dispute between Telugu film producers and the Telugu Film Employees Federation, which has brought film production to a standstill. The strike, now in its second week, was initiated by the federation demanding a 30% wage hike. Chiranjeevi is taking a cautious approach, aiming to be a neutral party. Sources indicate he is holding separate discussions with producers and union leaders to find a workable solution. The actor has even paused the shooting of his upcoming film to focus on resolving the industry-wide crisis. However, Chiranjeevi has had to publicly clarify his position after some federation members made "baseless" claims that he had assured them their demands would be met. In a post on X, he wrote, "I have not met anyone from the federation. This is an industry issue and no individual, including me, can give any unilateral assurances to solve any problem one way or the other." He stressed that the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce is the "apex body" responsible for collective negotiations. The producers argue that a 30% wage hike is unsustainable, particularly for small-budget films, and that the strike is an act of "blackmail" as wage agreements are typically renewed every three years. The Film Chamber has also authorized producers to hire non-union workers, escalating the conflict. The Telugu Film Industry Employees' Federation (TFIEF) leaders have stated they are open to compromise, explaining that their demand for a 30% hike was meant to be implemented over three years, with a 10% increase per year, including a 20% raise now and the remaining 10% later. They have also expressed frustration with the producers, who they say have laid down conditions that are unacceptable to the workers. Director Veera Shankar, a member of the Federation's Coordination Committee, expressed hope in Chiranjeevi's involvement, saying, "Federation members haven't yet received a call from Chiranjeevi garu, but we are hopeful. Thousands of workers are struggling as their daily earnings are at stake, and we believe he can help find an amicable solution."
