Odisha CM Majhi lays foundation for Rs 7 crore project to develop Jayadev Pitha into spiritual hub
Addressing a function on the occasion of Jayadev Jayanti, the chief minister emphasised Jayadev and his creation Geeta Govinda are integral to Odisha's cultural identity.
He also announced several projects to develop Jayadev Pitha as a hub for literature, culture and spirituality. The project includes creation of flower gardens, 10 lotus ponds and lush green landscapes with various creepers and plants, aimed at restoring the natural beauty reminiscent of the poet's era.
The chief minister also announced several other initiatives for the development of the site, including an entrance gate, a Dasavatar plaza, beautification of the lotus pond, development of groves, craft shops and food courts.
Emphasising that the government is committed to honouring the state's revered figures and luminaries, and celebration of Jayadev's birthplace is a part of this effort, Majhi directed Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi to develop the site and transform it into a model village.
He further highlighted the government's commitment to preserve and promote Odisha's cultural heritage by paying tribute to its great sons and daughters. 'Developing Jayadev Pitha into a prominent cultural and spiritual hub aligns with this vision,' Majhi added.
He directed the Culture, Tourism, and Information & Public Relations departments to jointly prepare a detailed project report for the site's development. Deputy chief minister Pravati Parida, Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, MLA Babu Singh and senior officers of Culture, Tourism, and I&PR departments were also present.

New Delhi: At least 34 per cent of Delhi's low-income households spend 15 per cent of their monthly income accessing basic drinking water, according to a survey released by an NGO. Conducted across 12 different localities of the city, Greenpeace India, in its survey, also found that during peak summer months, there is an occasional water supply disruption. "A rapid water audit conducted in Delhi has found that 34 per cent of the surveyed low-income households are spending up to 15 per cent of their monthly earnings (Rs 6,000-Rs 10,000) just to access basic drinking water," it said. This reflects a deep-rooted inequality and unsustainable water distribution system in the city, especially during peak summer months, the survey added. There was no immediate response available from the Delhi government on the matter. The survey data further shows a clear mismatch between water demand and actual availability, as 37 per cent of the surveyed households require at least 20-25 litres of water per day, considering the size of their families and consumption patterns. However, only 28 per cent of those households receive an adequate amount of water -- that too only if they pay for it, the report data added. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is the main water-supplying agency in the city, distributing water through 9000 kilometres of pipelines and tankers. Greenpeace India's report is based on surveys from 500 households across unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters like Shakurpur Basti, Savda Ghevra, Daya Basti, Chunna Bhatti, Khajan Basti, Seemapuri, Sunder Nagri, Lohar Basti, Sangam Vihar, etc. "Water is a basic right, but for these families, it is an everyday crisis. In the settlements without water ATMs, people are forced to buy water from private suppliers at Rs 15 to Rs 30 per gallon. This is not just about missing infrastructure; it shows a clear gap between what policies promise and what people get," Vaishali Upadhyay, a campaigner in Greenpeace India, said. The survey report also states that despite the Delhi government's announcement in April 2025 to install 3000 water ATMs, only 20 have been set up citywide till June, and none in the surveyed areas.

Court holds airline liable for flight delay, service deficiency
New Delhi: District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, southwest Delhi, recently held Alliance Air Aviation liable for deficiency in service following a six-hour delay in a flight's departure, which caused mental agony to the passengers. The commission, chaired by president Suresh Kumar Gupta and member Harshali Kaur, found the airline negligent for discovering a technical glitch after passengers had already boarded. Last month, it ordered the airline to pay Rs 50,000 to the complainants as compensation for mental harassment, agony, and litigation expenses. The complainants, Mainawati Devi and Shakuntala Devi, were scheduled to board an Alliance Air flight from New Delhi to Gorakhpur at 11.30 am on June 5, 2022, to attend a religious ceremony. They arrived at the airport at 8 am, completed pre-departure formalities by 9.30 am, and were ready to board at 10.45 am. However, the flight departed only at 5.30 pm. At 1 pm, the plane was pushed back but then parked again, and passengers were asked to de-board. They received no information for four hours and re-boarded five-and-a-half hours after the original departure time. On June 6, the complainants emailed the airline about the mental harassment and deficiency in service. The airline responded on June 17, refusing compensation. Subsequently, the complainants filed a complaint with the district commission seeking redress. The bench further observed that the aircraft should have been in good running condition once boarding commenced, and the technical glitch should have been checked prior to boarding. The commission stated that the delay was not due to bad weather or non-clearance from the ATC, and the checking of the aircraft was within the airline's responsibility. The bench also noted the mental distress experienced by the passengers, who were de-boarded and not even served water or meals. Teen felicitated for saving 2 from drowning
1 2 Rourkela: A 14-year-old boy, who saved the lives of two youths from drowning four days back, was felicitated by NIT Rourkela Alumni Association (NITRAA) on the occasion of Independence Day. On Wednesday, around 2 pm, three youths went to Deo to take a bath. A fisherman advised them not to go into the river, but they didn't listen. As the trio went further into the river, they started drowning. Saban Bhumij, who had gone to the river after school to take a bath, saw the youths drowning. The Class VIII student, who was an expert swimmer, jumped into the river. He reached the two youths and dragged them to the shore. However, he couldn't save the third. On Thursday, the body of the third was recovered from the river. Saban bravery was lauded at different quarters resulting in NITRAA felicitating him on Friday. He was given a cash award of Rs 5,000, promised a football kit and since his parents are poor, NITRAA also assured to take care of Saban's studies till he graduates.
