US Commerce Secretary Lutnick flags Russian arms, India's BRICS membership as irritants
India's decision to purchase Russian arms and to pursue a closer BRICS partnership have rubbed America the wrong way, argued the country's Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday.
'There were certain things that the Indian government did that generally rubbed the United States the wrong way. For instance, you generally buy your military gear from Russia. That's a way to kind of get under the skin of America if you're going to buy your armaments from Russia. I think India is starting to move towards buying military equipment from the United States, which then goes a long way. And these kind of things - just creating that relationship being a part of BRICS - which is, oh, let's move to not support the dollar and dollar hegemony. That's not really the way to make friends and influence people in America,' said Lutnick in Washington DC speaking at an event hosted by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.
Lutnick added that President Trump had chosen to bring up these concerns in the past.
'The President calls that out directly and specifically, and the Indian government is addressing it specifically. And that's how you move on to a really positive place. Put it on the table, address it straight on, resolve it straight on and get to a really good place. And I think that's where we are,' he said.

Lutnick previously urged India to purchase more defence equipment from the United States instead of traditional suppliers like France.
However, he also pointed to strong progress on trade talks between New Delhi and Washington. Lutnick outlined some of the contours of a potential trade deal with America seeking 'reasonable' access to the Indian market and a reduction of the trade deficit. In return, India will seek special access in certain key markets.
'India has put the right person on the other side of the table. We have managed,I think, to be in a very, very good place. You should expect a deal between the United States and India in the not too distant future because we've found a place that really works for both countries,' Lutnick told his audience.
Lutnick - who previously helmed finance firm Cantor Fitzgerald - also declared that America would seek to bring advanced manufacturing back to the United States. This comes just weeks after US President Donald Trump urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to expand production in America instead of pursuing expansion in India.
'There are an enormous number of product categories that we are going to be delighted for India to produce,' Lutnick added. He went on to say that the US-India trade deal will allow New Delhi a better tariff relationship with Washington, which will benefit Indian products in key sectors.

Stocks to buy under ₹100: Experts recommend five shares to buy today — 5 June 2025
Stock market today: After losing for three straight sessions, the Indian stock market witnessed a trend reversal on Wednesday. The Nifty 50 index finished 77 points higher at 24,620, the BSE Sensex ended 260 points higher at 80,998, and the Bank Nifty index added 76 points and closed at 55,676. Eternal, Jio Financial and IndusInd Bank were among the major gainers on the Nifty, while major losers were Bajaj Finserv, Trent, and Eicher Motors. The Mid-cap and the Small-cap indices once again showcased their robust outperformance relative to the benchmark. The Nifty Midcap 100 Index rose by 0.71%, while the Nifty Small-cap 100 Index advanced by 0.79%. Market breadth remained positive for the third consecutive day, with advancing stocks outpacing declining ones, as indicated by a BSE advance-decline ratio of 1.10. Speaking on the outlook for the Nifty 50 today, Nandish Shah, Deputy Vice President at HDFC Securities, said, "The Nifty 50 index closed below its 20-day EMA for the second consecutive session. However, Nifty held its level above the previous swing low of 24462 registered on 22 May 2025. On the upside, a swing high of 24,845 would offer resistance to Nifty 50 index, while 24,500 is likely to act as strong support." On the outlook of the Bank Nifty today, Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Research Analyst at SAMCO Securities, said, "Structurally, the Nifty Bank index remains mildly bullish, holding above its short-term moving average. However, price action continues to lack momentum, with buyers hesitating to chase highs ahead of the RBI monetary policy outcome later this week. This upcoming event will likely act as a directional resolution catalyst, potentially bringing sharp moves and volatility spikes. Unless the index decisively breaks below 55,300, the overall structure favours buying-on-dips, and the downside risk appears limited for now. A sustained move above the resistance of 56,150 could attract aggressive buying interest, but until that happens, the range trading strategy may remain valid." Asked about the outlook of the Indian stock market today, Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research—Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal, said, 'We expect the market to remain in consolidation mode, tracking global markets and macro-economic cues, while stock-specific action will continue on the back of sectoral developments.' India, Australia ties see enormous growth, diversification: Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said India and Australia have witnessed an "enormous deepening and diversification" of bilateral cooperation in the last five years, and reaffirmed commitment to look at areas such as critical minerals, cyber, technology, and space as further domains of collaboration. Addressing an event at the Australian High Commission here to mark the fifth anniversary of India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, he also said the reason behind this "dosti" has actually been the "strong leadership that we have seen from both countries". Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, who is on a visit to India, was also present on the occasion. Jaishankar said "here we are -- not just with a transformed relationship", but actually marking five years of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. "I think these have been five great years in our ties. Many more to come," he said. Earlier in the day, the Australian leader said Canberra's relationship with New Delhi is of the "highest priority" and that it is profoundly significant to Australia's national interest. Jaishankar said that in the last five years, "we have seen an enormous deepening and diversification of our cooperation". "So, I am here today to reaffirm, in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister, a strong commitment to take this relationship to still greater heights, to look at areas like critical minerals, cyber, technology, space, sports as further domains of collaboration, and to work on mechanisms -- most of all the Quad, but in the East Asia Summit platforms, the Indian Ocean Rim Association, the United Nations, even the trilateral grouping that we have with France," he said. India and Australia on Wednesday resolved to further boost their strategic ties with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailing Canberra's unequivocal support to New Delhi's resolute response to the barbaric Pahalgam terror attack. Singh held wide-ranging talks with his visiting Australian counterpart focusing on various aspects of bilateral defence cooperation as well as New Delhi's "extreme challenges" along its border with Pakistan. "...Today we saw one example of that as the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated the strong sense of solidarity and support that we got when the Pahalgam terrorist attack happened, and I recall that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, despite being in the middle of a very intense election campaign, actually reached out and called Prime Minister Modi to express those sentiments," Jaishankar said in his address.
