One month to go: 5 things every military family should do before a PCS

Yahoo30-07-2025
Every service member and military family out there knows how stressful and chaotic a PCS can be. With so much piling up on our to-do lists alone, we tend to lose sight of the fun and soulful moments we can still create to make memories before our big move.
The final month before the move can bring exciting opportunities to enjoy a duty station before the goodbyes start setting in. You've got thirty days, one big move coming up, and here are five things to do before the month is over to close out this duty station chapter.
1. Focus on your bucket list.
We have all been there. We arrived at a duty station with the motivation to do all the things, but guess what? Life, work, school, and all the routines got in the way, and we did not check everything off our list. Life happened, but now you have thirty days, so make it count!
This is such a heartfelt way to transition out of a duty station while also visiting new places. Take advantage of your local natural surroundings and tackle one last adventure. Before everything gets packed, make plans to spend time together trying something new. Checking off more fun things off your bucket list can become treasured stories in your family's PCS journey.
2. Say meaningful goodbyes.
Someone cutting onions? Goodbyes are rough. Not going to sugar coat it, they are hard… not just for you but also for our military kids, and the people we leave behind. Adults and kids need closure. We understand the challenges of military life when it comes to forming connections and friendships; these relationships deserve to be honored with meaningful farewells.
Host a final gathering and invite neighbors and friends. Take all the photos together. Write notes for the people who made a difference in this chapter, and most of all, make honest and achievable plans to stay in touch.
3. Take a photo in your home.
Just one snapshot of you all in the place you called home.
This is something that has been a must for our family: Having a photo of us together at a place we called home throughout our military life adventures. This photo will help you reflect on the time you spent together in this home, the memories you made, the ups and downs of the duty station, and, most of all, the way everything always seems to work out despite the challenges of military life.
4. Revisit memories.
If you completed your bucket list, then why not revisit some of your favorite spots with family and friends? From favorite coffee shops, nature trails, local markets, and hidden gems in your neighborhood, you can visit these with a different perspective. Return to your favorite running trail, the splash pad your kids love, your go-to sunset spot, a favorite bookstore, local diner… even your favorite installation staples like the bowling alley or an MWR outdoor site.
Revisiting familiar spots during your last month offers a chance to see them differently: with more presence, more gratitude, and often, more emotion. You're not chasing nostalgia, you're collecting closure.
5. Take care of the necessary.
The last month will be busy, and yes, having heartfelt moments is important, but taking care of the logistics of your move is, too. This is not limited to just packing. Don't forget to forward your mail or place it on temporary hold. Stop any subscriptions you will not need until you arrive at your new duty station. If you live in military housing, do not forget to request your final inspection and plan your move-out cleaning. Disconnect utilities, organize important documents, and make copies (yes, digital copies too).
You can also plan to schedule vehicle maintenance if you are driving for your PCS, and never forget to track all your expenses for PCS-related reimbursements. While we're busy making the most of our time left, we also owe it to ourselves to wrap up the military-related loose ends that can make or break a smooth transition.
You have one last month to enjoy the chapter you are getting ready to close. And while everything feels exhausting, the silver lining is that you have the power to make it count and make it memorable. It is your last pause before what comes next. We are all very aware of the unknowns that a PCS can bring.
For the last thirty days, as you check off another duty station, let the countdown come with intention to reconnect. We know that change is coming, but one last month to enjoy and create more memories is essential to say farewell and move on to the next adventure.
Goodbyes may be hard, but they're also proof that you made a place feel like home!

US airlines' shares jump as airfare data signals improving pricing power

(Reuters) -Shares of major U.S. carriers jumped on Tuesday after upbeat airfare data for July signaled improving pricing power for the industry, as airlines bring capacity in check to align with a soft demand environment. Shares of legacy carriers United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines jumped nearly 10% each, while budget rival Southwest Airlines gained 4% in afternoon trading. Smaller peers Alaska Air and JetBlue Airways rose about 10% each and low-cost carrier Frontier Group surged 22%. Data from the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics on Tuesday showed airfares rose 4% in July after slipping 0.1% in June, marking their first increase in six months. Uncertainty stemming from President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs and budget cuts has prompted travelers to curb discretionary spending and reassess plans. A soft demand environment, particularly from budget-conscious domestic travelers, had forced carriers to discount fares, squeezing margins despite summer typically being their peak money-making season. Airlines have since been trimming seats on offer and readjusting routes to keep their pricing power in control and shield margins. During their second-quarter earnings calls in July, major executives expressed confidence in the industry's ability to cut capacity and boost airfares in the latter part of the year.

These Are the Best Glamping Spots in the U.S. for 2025—From Hobbit Houses to Forest Domes

Glamping has reshaped how travelers experience the outdoors, offering overnights in nature with luxuries like real beds and electricity. As the trend has gained traction, property owners and campground hosts have grown more inventive: think minimalist A-frames tucked among the trees or geodesic domes with ceiling windows made for stargazing. Each year, Hipcamp, a platform for booking outdoor stays, releases its roundup of standout glamping properties, culled from reviews, ratings, and booking data across its network of more than 500,000 sites. The focus isn't just on stylish accommodations in striking settings—it's also on hosts who deliver thoughtful, memorable experiences. This year's unranked list spans the country, from canvas yurts on a working farm in East Oʻahu to a hobbit-style hideaway in the rolling hills of Iowa, where goats, llamas, and peacocks roam. The No. 1 spot went to Cedar Bloom in Cave Junction, Oregon. Cedar Bloom Farm blends communal open camping with dreamy glamping in tiny A‑frames, vintage trailers, and domes—including a tiny, two-person 'Forest Gnome Dome.' Guests gather at the shared main house with a kitchen, shower house, and sauna. In second place is Heartwood Mendocino in Mendocino, California. Just minutes from Mendocino's shoreline is Heartwood Mendocino, a glamping property with canvas-walled cabins that have heated mattresses and luxe linens. Don't miss the legendary redwood-tree shower or the outdoor kitchen with giant redwood slab tables. No. 3 is an East coast gem: The Falls at Sewanee Creek in Tracy City, Tennessee. The Falls at Sewanee Creek invites guests to unwind beside Miller's Falls, a stunning 50‑foot cascade that's a short walk from the property's creative lodging—including a treehouse, a 'treetent,' and a cabin built from shipping containers. In addition to nearby waterfalls, there's a nearby cave and a fairy village tucked into the trees. The top 10 includes sites in Minnesota, Iowa, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania. Santa Clarita's new 720-acre mountain bike park to open winter 2025

Santa Clarita is appealing to outdoor enthusiasts as it transforms 720 acres in Haskell Canyon into a mountain biker's paradise. The $7.4 million Haskell Canyon Bike Park project has been three years in the making and is set to open in December of 2025. From the entrance sign to the last jump line, Jess Albrecq, with the city of Santa Clarita, says that 15 miles of trails will offer a little something for riders of all skill levels. "So if your skill level is starting out as someone who has never ridden before, you're going to be able to come out and learn how to ride in a flat open area and then progress your way through this, and take it as far as you want to go," he said. There is a perimeter trail that climbs around the entire park, single-track trails, downhill flowlines, jumps, berms, rollers, and more. Santa Clarita native and professional mountain bike racer Spencer Rathkamp, said he developed his skills in the area and is excited about what the park can do for the sport. "This park is going to be pretty sweet," he said. "For the city to be willing to put that much money behind something, it means that they believe in what mountain biking can do for the community." The city worked with Avid Trails on the design, and the company is also providing construction support to make sure everything gets done according to plan. Trail users say there is a lot of open space, but not many trails are dedicated to mountain bikers. "The exciting part is there is nothing like this in any other city in Southern California. It's the only thing like it, it's the first of its kind and Santa Clarita is just booming with mountain bikers," Tony Arnold, Santa Clarita Valley trail user, said. Haskell Canyon Bike Park is located at 21450 Copper Hill Drive in Santa Clarita and will operate year-round, free, with an expected opening in December 2025.
