At least 65 families from India and the United Kingdom who lost kin in the horrific June 12 Air India plane crash have hired prominent United States-based law firm Beasley Allen.The law firm's aviation attorney Mike Andrews visited the crash site in Meghaninagar area in Ahmedabad before coming to Vadodara city, where he met some of the victim families.While talking to the reporters here on Friday, Andrews said the families have an option of filing a product liability claim in a US court depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation.Families who have contacted the law firm want to know what happened, why it happened and what are the options they have, Andrews added.He urged the Union government to release the data of the flight data recorder as well as cockpit voice recorder so that lawyers and experts can analyse it and explore further legal options.
On June 12, Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft en route to London Gatwick, crashed into a medical hostel complex shortly after take off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft burst into flames, killing 241 out of 242 people onboard and 19 individuals on the ground, including four medical students."We visited the crash site and spoke with some of the individuals who were there. We were able to take some photographs and get a feeling of the size of the scene. We met families from the UK and India, and they all expressed their burning desire for answers, for transparency and information," said Andrews.According to his media team, the majority of those 65 families from India and UK hail from Gujarat and neighbouring Diu."We currently represent 65 families who are citizens of both India and the UK. Legal options are based on the data and what investigations reveal. It will give us an idea which entity may or may not be responsible. If Boeing is found to be responsible for this crash, we anticipate the cases will be filed in the Federal court in the US," said Andrews.He asserted the best place to hold companies accountable is in the USA using product liability laws available there."The US legal system is set up in a way that an individual, a consumer or family, can stand on a level playing field with a multinational firm such as Boeing, look them in the eye and request accountability," he claimed."We don't know whose error was that. The allegation is that a switch was removed. A very small piece of information has been released from the cockpit voice recorder. What we don't know is the larger context, what other conversations were held between the pilots. Once we have data, we will know that," he added.Andrews claimed a report suggesting pilot error in the crash was a "narrative typically originated from the manufacturer and its an attempt to deflect focus from their product".When asked if Indian pilots are purposefully blamed in this case, he said, "Not just Indian pilots, more often than not, pilots who are dead are the ones who are blamed. In other incidents wherein planes landed safely, those pilots were not blamed, because those pilots can speak for themselves." He emphasised that until the data of the crash is made available, it is difficult to find out what exactly happened and whether something has been hidden intentionally."Families want data to be released to their attorneys and experts. We know Air India and the Indian government have this information. It is time to reveal that data so that experts can help families understand," he said.From Vadodara, Andrews will travel to Surat and then to Diu to meet the families who have agreed to pursue the case.
Before leaving for the United Kingdowm, he will visit Ahmedabad and meet the kin of the victims, said his team. PTI

Tempo driver missing since 2021, wife moves Bombay High Court alleging mob lynching by cow vigilantes
In a chilling account of alleged mob violence and institutional apathy, a Mumbai-based woman, Reshma Rafiq Tamboli (33) has approached the Bombay High Court on Friday (August 8, 2025), seeking urgent intervention in tracing her husband, who has been missing for over two years after reportedly being assaulted by self-proclaimed cow vigilantes in Pune district. Ms. Tamboli, the petitioner, has alleged that her husband, Rafiq Mehboob Tamboli (35), a tempo driver, was abducted and possibly lynched by a group led by Shivshankar Swami — an individual claiming to be an Animal Welfare Officer appointed under a High Court-constituted committee. When the matter was called in the High Court, advocate Satish B. Talekar for the petitioner informed the Division Bench of Justices Ravindra V. Ghuge and Gautam Ashwin Ankad, that the incident took place on the night of June 4, 2021, when Mr. Tamboli and a cleaner named Imran Sheikh Abdul Gafar were transporting meat from Pune's Indapur to Mumbai. They were intercepted near Daund by a group of men in a white car, who accused them of transporting beef illegally. The mob, allegedly armed with bamboo sticks and sharp weapons, reportedly dragged the two out of the vehicle, assaulted them, and raised communal slogans. The cleaner managed to escape and later narrated the sequence of events to the petitioner. Mr. Tamboli, however, has been untraceable since that night. Mr. Tamboli reached the location at Indapur around 8.30pm. The workers of the seller loaded the goods in the tempo and handed over the bills of the goods to him. The petitioner submitted to the court that she had a last telephonic conversation with her husband at about 9.30pm on June 4, 2021. At that time, he informed her that he had started from Indapur and was enroute Mumbai. 'On their way to Mumbai, a white car started following. The men called out threats and abuses and called upon them to stop the tempo. Sensing a threat, they did not stop the vehicle and kept driving ahead. At around 10.30 pm, the white car succeeded in overtaking the tempo of the petitioner and stopped the tempo. Around 5-6 men stepped out of the car and rushed towards the tempo and dragged the petitioner's husband and the cleaner by breaking the glass of the windows of the tempo and started assaulting them with kicks and fists,' the petition said. The attackers were carrying bamboo sticks, knives, swords in their hands and were shouting slogans of 'Jai Shri Ram'. The assailants forcibly unloaded the tempo, tore open the packages, and allegedly discovered beef along with other items such as green vegetables. Despite the driver and cleaner producing valid bills for the consignment from the seller, the mob reportedly destroyed the documents and continued to thrash both men brutally. According to the petition, they ignored the fact that the victims were merely transporters and not owners of the goods. The duo was allegedly robbed during the assault, with cash and personal belongings snatched by the attackers. While the cleaner, managed to escape the mob and hid in nearby bushes, Mr. Tamboli was chased down when he attempted to flee. The attackers later took the tempo to Daund Police Station and filed FIR at around 4.12am on June 5, 2021, accusing the driver, cleaner, meat seller, and vehicle owner of offences under Section 429 of the IPC and Sections 5(c), 9(a), and 9(b) of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1995. The FIR alleged illegal possession, sale, and transportation of beef, but did not name any of the accused individuals. The petitioner contends that the FIR filed by Mr. Swami was based on distorted facts. On June 5, 2021, Ms. Tamboli was informed by a man named Sadik that while the tempo had been seized by the police, her husband was missing. Despite repeated attempts, her husband's phone was unreachable. She initially approached Chunabhatti Police Station in Mumbai on June 6, 2021, to lodge a complaint, but was redirected to the jurisdictional police. At Daund Police Station, despite being aware of the incident, officers refused to file an FIR for assault or abduction and instead registered a missing person's report only on June 9. The petitioner accused the police of deliberate inaction and claimed that despite knowing her husband's disappearance was linked to a violent mob attack, they failed to investigate or connect the dots. She later met the cleaner, Imran Sheikh, who narrated the incident and submitted an affidavit corroborating the petitioner's claims. Further complaints were made to the Superintendent of Police, Pune Rural, on June 28, 2021, naming Shivshankar Swami and others, but no FIR was registered. The petitioner alleged that police ignored her detailed complaints disclosing cognizable offences, and instead shielded the accused. She fears her husband may be dead or detained without trace. The petiton highlighted the pattern of systemic targeting of members of the Qureshi community and meat industry workers by self-styled 'gau-rakshaks', who allegedly operate under the cover of ID cards issued by an animal welfare committee constituted by the High Court. These vigilantes engage in mob violence with impunity and police support, the petition said. The petitioner highlighted that as early as January 16, 2018, the Additional Commissioner of Animal Husbandry had written to the Maharashtra government recommending the cancellation of appointments of Mr. Swami and Milind Ekbote due to their involvement in 'anti-legal activities.' However, no action was taken, and Mr. Swami was allegedly allowed to continue operating with impunity. Ms. Tamboli made several attempts to seek help through social organisations, which submitted representations to senior officials, including the then Deputy Chief Minister, Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural), and Daund Police, on at least six occasions between September 2021 and August 2022. Yet, no FIR was registered, and no investigation initiated. The petitioner alleged a deliberate cover-up by police officials acting in collusion with Mr. Swami. She pointed out that her husband, the sole breadwinner, has left behind a distressed family—herself, a homemaker, and two children aged 13 and 11—struggling emotionally and financially. The petitioner asserted that her husband was last seen in the custody of Mr. Swami. In her plea, Ms. Tamboli has sought: production of her husband before the court; registration of an FIR against Swami and his associates for assault and suspected abduction; constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT); and disciplinary action against erring police officials who failed to take action. All India Jamatul Quresh Committee have preferred several representations requesting the police authorities to register offence against Shivshankar Swami and his associates, but to no avail, Mr. Talekar added. The Bench asked why the FIR was not lodged and whether the missing person's investigation was done by police and whether the police posted his photos on electronic and print media. Additional Public Prosecutor, Konde Deshmukh submitted to the court that he will place all the papers of investigation before Superintendent of Police, Solapur who will decide whether to register offence against Shivshankar Swami. The court had adjourned the matter till next week.

New Delhi: A businessman from Nizamuddin recently received multiple extortion calls demanding Rs 5 crore. The caller identified himself as UK-based gangster Kapil Sangwan, also known as Nandu, who is wanted in several criminal cases. The businessman, who is involved in the import-export business, received multiple threatening calls in which the caller warned of dire consequences if the money was not paid. Alarmed by the threats, the businessman approached police and filed a formal complaint. A case was registered, and an investigation was launched. The matter was taken up on priority given the alleged involvement of an international gangster and the nature of the threats. Police sources said that deputy commissioner of police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari assigned the case to the district's special task force. As part of the investigation, police took the remand of jailed gangster Jyoti for a day. Jyoti used to operate with liquor barons of Haryana and Gujarat. He was arrested in Gujarat in 2020 by a Delhi Police team. At age 19, Jyoti was also involved in a murder in Bahadurgarh, Haryana. He was later arrested, put on trial, and sentenced to life. After his conviction, his younger brother Kapil Sangwan took over command of his gang. Sangwan occupied a place in the list of the top five wanted gangsters after he orchestrated the murder of INLD Haryana unit chief Nafe Singh Rathi. The fugitive has been operating a lucrative extortion racket through shooters recruited via social media. Sangwan fled to the UK in 2020 on a fake passport. He belongs to Najafgarh and uses VoIP to make extortion demands from London. A caller, claiming to be Sangwan, threatened to kill the businessman and his family if the demand wasn't met. In another incident that took place in Nov last year, three individuals fired several rounds at a supermarket in Paschim Vihar, creating a sense of panic among shoppers and local residents.

Probe Agency Opposes Sanjay Bhandari's Plea Against 'Fugitive Offender' Tag In Delhi High Court
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday opposed in the Delhi High Court a plea of UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari against a trial court's order declaring him a "fugitive economic offender". The probe agency said when the trial court's order was passed in July, the court was aware about an assessment order showing Rs 655 crore of property was surreptitiously acquired. His counsel and senior advocate Kapil Sibal, however, argued before Justice Neena Bansal Krishna that the prosecution was initiated without completion of assessment proceedings and if the assessment was incomplete, where was the reason to believe that the tax evasion was over Rs 100 crore. "They had no evidence to show that there was a Rs 100 crore tax liability. There has to be reason to believe that the tax liability is more than Rs 100 crore. Now if the assessment is not completed, where is the reason to believe that it is more than Rs 100 crore. This application (to declare him a fugitive) did not lie. It was premature," he submitted. Seeking a stay and quashing of the trial court proceedings, Sibal said Bhandari would be remediless the moment they declare him a fugitive. "They (ED) don't follow the law, they want to declare me a fugitive offender and take over Rs 400-500 crores of my property and don't allow me to file any claim. This is the state of law in this country," he said. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the ED, said, "When the order was passed the trial court was aware that there was an assessment order showing that Rs 655 crore of property has been surreptitiously acquired and on the date of the order, there was more than Rs 100 crore tax liability and Rs 196 crore of tax evasion is there." The court posted the matter for August 20. The trial court on July 5 declared Bhandari a "fugitive economic offender" on a plea by the ED, an order that allows the agency to confiscate all the assets worth crores of rupees of Bhandari, whose chances to come to India have been virtually nullified after a UK court recently ruled against his extradition. Bhandari's legal team, while opposing the ED's move to get him declared a fugitive offender, claimed its "client's stay could not be called illegal in the UK as he has a legal right to reside in the UK and the government of India is bound by the judgment of the UK court... Bhandari is legally living there, and declaring him a 'fugitive' in that scenario is legally wrong". The trial court said the "extradition attempt may have failed, but it will not make the accused an angel or immune from prosecution for the violation of Indian laws". Bhandari (63) fled to London in 2016, soon after the I-T department raided him in Delhi. The ED filed its first chargesheet against Bhandari in 2020.
