Siddaramaiah seeks two defence industrial corridors in State, defence land for infrastructure projects in Bengaluru
Karnataka is home to 67% of all aircraft and helicopter manufacturing for defence services and 25% of India's aircraft and spacecraft industry.
In a memorandum submitted to Mr. Singh, the Chief Minister said the proposed corridors would leverage the existing ecosystem and infrastructure, further cementing Karnataka's reputation as the defence capital of India. In 2018, the Centre announced the defence industrial corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to strengthen indigenous production and reduce imports.
Air show during Dasara
Mr. Siddaramaiah also urged the Defence Minister to allow the participation of the Indian Air Force in the form of an aerial display by Surya Kiran, Sarang, and other aerobatic teams during the Mysuru Dasara celebrations from September 25 to October 2.
The spirit of the festival strengthens public appreciation for the armed forces, he said. The armed forces conducted air shows in Mysuru during Dasara celebrations in 2017, 2019, and 2023.
Land for projects
In another petition to Mr. Singh, the Chief Minister sought the transfer of defence land for the development of infrastructure projects in the city.
For implementing the Bengaluru Urban Vehicular Twin Tunnel Project, the Chief Minister sought 2.039 acres of defence land, previously part of the erstwhile Hebbal Defence Dairy Farm. The tunnel road project would be taken up from Hebbal (Esteem Mall junction) on Ballari Road to Central Silk Board, providing a high-speed alternative for airport-bound and intercity commuters.
The State sought the transfer of 6.837 acres of defence land for the construction of the link road from Ballari Road to Sarovara Layout, situated behind the erstwhile Hebbal Defence Dairy Farm. This project is essential for providing direct access to Sarovara Layout. As per the Revised Master Plan 2015, an 18-metre-wide road has been proposed to improve connectivity and urban infrastructure.
For metro project
For the construction of a metro viaduct and flyover of the double-decker structure of Phase-3 of the Namma Metro project, the government sought defence land near Goraguntepalya, and an extent of 0.34 acres and 7.02 acres of air force land. The Phase-3 metro project consists of two corridors of 44.65 km in length.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by his deputy D.K. Shivakumar and Industries Minister M.B. Patil.

Wayanad landslides: Kerala HC gives last chance to Centre to convey decision on loan waivers to victims
Kochi: High court on Wednesday granted one final opportunity to the central govt to inform its decision on loan waivers for the victims of the landslides at Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad, which occurred on July 30, 2024. A bench of Justices A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Jobin Sebastian adjourned the suo motu petition concerning the rehabilitation of the Wayanad landslide victims to Sept 10, as requested by assistant solicitor general A R L Sundaresan. At an earlier hearing, the court had directed the central govt to decide on the matter after the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that it could not grant loan waivers, as the relevant provision empowering it to do so had been omitted from the National Disaster Management Act. However, the Centre has yet to arrive at a definitive decision. Previously, Sundaresan informed HC that the matter was under consideration by the Union ministry of finance and that additional time was required to take a decision, following which the court adjourned the case to Aug 13. On Wednesday, Sundaresan submitted that no information had yet been received from the ministry. He stated that he had sent an email seeking the final decision in the meantime and requested more time to obtain a reply. Tunnel project Meanwhile, in connection with related matters, Renjith Thampan, an amicus curiae in the case, informed HC that the state govt had decided to schedule the inauguration of the construction of the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin tunnel road project on Aug 31. Noting the submission, the bench orally cautioned the state govt that work could not commence without obtaining the mandatory clearance. It was then informed that the stage for commencing the work had not yet been reached, as Stage II forest clearance from the Centre had not been obtained. Meanwhile, another petition, a PIL filed by the Wayanad Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi, is pending before the bench of the Chief Justice. In that matter, the bench had clarified that all steps taken by the govt and the other respondents will be subject to the outcome of the PIL. 79th I-Day celebrations at Manekshaw Parade Ground to feature 35 police contingents
The 79th Independence Day will be celebrated at the Field Marshal Manekshaw parade ground in the heart of the city on Friday, with 1,150 members of 35 police force contingents taking part in the ceremonial parade. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will hoist the flag at 9 a.m., receive the salute, and later address the crowd. The event will witness a performance by 650 children commemorating the women from Karnataka who took part in the freedom struggle, according to a press release by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). As many as 500 students of Seshadripuram Pre-University College will stage a performance depicting five guarantees of the Congress government, and 253 members of the Karnataka police will participate in a mass band. The 35 contingents taking part in the parade include the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the City Armed Reserve (CAR), the Goa police, the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF), the traffic police, the women police, the Home Guards, the traffic wardens, the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services (KSFES), the canine squad, and a band squad. The Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner's office has started issuing free passes for the programme on the Seva Sindhu portal. As many as 3,000 passes will be issued, among which 100 have been issued already. Physical passes can also be collected at the Assistant Commissioner's and the Deputy Commissioner's offices. Similarly, no parking on Cubbon Road from CTO Circle to K.R. Road and Cubbon Road junction. Parking is also prohibited on M.G. Road between Anil Kumble Circle and Queens Circle on both sides. The vehicles coming from Infantry Road towards Manipal Centre should move on Infantry Road, take a left turn at Safina Plaza, move to Kamaraj Road via Dispensary Road, take a right turn at Dickenson Road junction, and reach Manipal Centre junction via Cubbon Road. Vehicles coming from Manipal junction towards BRV Junction on Cubbon Road will be prohibited near Manipal Centre. Owaisi dismisses Pak PM's 'threats' on Indus Water Treaty, says it won't impact India
HYDERABAD: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday dismissed Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's "threats" over the Indus Water Treaty, saying they would not have any impact on India. Speaking to reporters here, Owaisi also said the BrahMos missile is India's answer to Pakistan. 'You (Sharif) are the Prime Minister of a country… You are using such a language that it will not have any impact on us. The (Indian) government has kept the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance. Instead of showing some change, you are threatening. Threats will not have any impact on India. Enough of it,' he said, in response to a query on the remarks of Sharif, its army chief Asim Munir and other leaders on the treaty. Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said India would not be allowed to snatch "even one drop" of water belonging to Pakistan, amid tensions between the two neighbours. A day after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, India took a series of punitive measures against Pakistan that included putting the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960 in "abeyance". On Special Intensive Revision undertaken by the Election Commission in Bihar, the Hyderabad MP alleged that the names of many legitimate voters were being deleted. He noted that the Centre has not specified which documents prove citizenship.
