IPL 2025: Rajasthan Royals in limbo with Samson's return still uncertain
The 2008 champions slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat — and seventh overall — after falling short by 11 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Thursday in the Indian Premier League Season 18.
Blistering start, same old finish
Rajasthan, chasing 206, were off to a flyer. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Nitish Rana smashed 110 runs in the first nine overs, cashing in as the dew neutralised a tricky pitch. But the familiar middle-overs stutter returned once stand-in skipper Riyan Parag was dismissed, allowing Bengaluru back into the contest.
'I thought at the halfway mark we were in the driving seat,' Parag said. 'But we have ourselves to blame… we didn't show enough intent against the spinners and didn't execute well.'
Samson update — or lack of one
While the defeats continue to pile up, what's equally worrying for Rajasthan is the uncertainty around their captain's fitness.
'Sanju picked up a bit of a side issue during the game against Delhi (Capitals),' said Rahul Dravid at the pre-match press conference. 'He wasn't fit for the last game or this one, and the medical team didn't clear him to play.'
Dravid said the Royals took a cautious approach, opting to keep Samson off the road and under treatment.
'We didn't want him travelling and making two more flights. We've kept the physio back with him to try and get him back as quickly as possible,' he said.
However, when pressed for a return date, Dravid offered no clarity. 'I have no timeline to give as to when exactly he will be fit… we're trying our best.'
In the post-match chat, Sandeep Sharma didn't hold back about the impact of not having Samson around.
'His experience and leadership are things we can't replace. Sanju's such a smart player, and us missing him has impacted how we play. He couldn't even start the season with us because of injury, and now, just when he was back for a few games, he's hurt again. All of this adds up and makes it tough for us,' Sandeep said.
Hazlewood turns the tide
Rajasthan's defeat wasn't for lack of chances. After restricting Bengaluru to 205 for five, they needed only 18 runs from the final two overs. But Josh Hazlewood produced a game-changing penultimate over, conceding just one run and grabbing two wickets. He finished with 4 for 33 as Rajasthan ended on 194 for nine — another winnable chase gone wrong.
With just a handful of games left, Samson's prolonged absence — compounded by a finger injury earlier in the tournament — couldn't have come at a worse time. The Royals' play-off hopes are still alive, but only just. And without their captain, the path ahead looks increasingly unclear.

India look to break 'final barrier' in Women's World Cup
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur on Monday said the team was determined to break the "final barrier" and lift their first Women's World Cup cricket title this year after missing out twice previously. The 13th edition of the women's showpiece 50-over tournament will begin on September 30, with co-hosts India set to face Sri Lanka in the opener in Bengaluru. The Indian women made it to two ODI World Cup finals but lost on both occasions — going down to England by nine runs the last time around in 2017 at Lord's. Kaur, who made a valiant 51 runs in the final, will be leading India for the first time in the marquee tournament. "Playing in front of a home crowd is always special, and hopefully, this time we will give our 100 percent and finally break that barrier that all Indian fans are waiting for," Kaur said. "World Cups are always special, and we always want to do something special" for the country, she said at an International Cricket Council event in Mumbai. Kaur's India are fresh from a series win in England, where they beat the hosts 3-2 in T20 matches and 2-1 in three 50-overs games. "(The confidence is) very high. The kind of cricket we've played over the last couple of years, gives us a lot of confidence," said the top-order batter. India opener Smriti Mandhana said the women's team has witnessed a change in mindset over the years. "There's a calmness with which I want to go about on the field," said Mandhana at the event, which marked the 50-day countdown to the tournament. "Our whole team is heading in that direction. We know where we want to work hard. And when we enter the field, we know we've just got to implement." Pakistan will play all their matches in Colombo as part of a compromise deal that allows both India and Pakistan to play at neutral venues in multi-nation tournaments. The final will be played on November 2 either in Bengaluru or Colombo, depending on whether Pakistan reach the title clash.

Kohli returns to training in London, thanks GT's assistant coach for help
Amidst ongoing speculation over his future in international cricket, talismanic India batter Virat Kohli has returned to training in London and expressed gratitude to Gujarat Titans' assistant coach Naeem Amin for help in an indoor practice session. 'Thanks for helping out with the hit, brother. Always lovely to see you,' Kohli wrote in his Instagram story, sharing a photo of him with Amin from the session. 'Good to see you, brother! See you soon,' Amin said, resharing the story on his account. Amin runs the Mighty Willow Academy in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and London, and was previously with the Sunrisers Hyderabad coaching staff in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Previously, India's fast-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya had come to Amin's academy for quality practice sessions. Having retired from both Tests and T20Is since June 2024, Kohli's focus is now solely on ODIs for India and the Indian Premier League (IPL) commitments with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Kohli, who has 14,181 runs in 302 ODIs, last played competitive cricket when he struck a match-winning 43 in the IPL 2025 final, helping RCB finally lift their maiden trophy after beating Punjab Kings by six runs in the title clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Fans will have to wait until October 2025 to see Kohli back in action, as India are not scheduled to play any ODIs before then. India were scheduled to play three ODIs in Bangladesh in August, but the series has been postponed to September 2026 by mutual agreement between BCCI and BCB. Both Kohli and Rohit Sharma - who have also stepped away from Tests and T20Is - are expected to return for the ODI leg of India's white-ball tour of Australia, starting on Oct. 19 at Perth Stadium, and are followed by matches at Adelaide Oval and Sydney Cricket Ground on Oct. 23 and 25, respectively. Meanwhile, less than a year after a much talked about reunion with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), veteran off-spinner Ravichandran is likely to enter the mini auction ahead of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after parting ways with the five-time championship winning side. Sources tracking the development have confirmed to IANS on Friday that Ashwin is indeed moving on from CSK, a franchise who he represented from 2008-2015 and became a two-time IPL winner. 'It's all but certain that he will be released by CSK whenever retention dates are announced. He will be only entering the auction pool,' further said the sources. Indo-Asian News Service

Bengaluru stampede: M Chinnaswamy Stadium deemed 'unsuitable, unsafe' for large-scale events
The M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru has been deemed "unsuitable and unsafe" for large-scale events, according to the findings of Justice John Michael Cunha Commission. The panel was appointed by the Karnataka government to investigate the July 4 stampede that occurred near the stadium during the victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win, which left 11 dead and over 50 injured. As per ESPNCricinfo, the commission's report stated that the venue's "design and structure" are inherently "unsuitable and unsafe" for large-scale gatherings. It also warned that the organisation of big-attendance events at the stadium will pose "unacceptable risks to public safety, urban mobility, and emergency preparedness." The report, which has been shared with the Karnataka government and accessed by ESPNCricinfo, indicted RCB, the franchise's event partners DNA Entertainment and the state's cricket governing body, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for their role in the stampede which took place on July 4, just the day after team's maiden IPL win, which ended an 18-year-long wait. The report cited "systematic limitations" and "strongly recommended" that large-scale events be relocated to venues that are "better suited" for them. "Any future venue should adhere to international standards," the report stated as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. This leaves matches being held at the stadium during the near future in doubt, as it is set to host the opening game and the semifinal of the ICC Women's ODI Cricket World Cup, starting from September 30 to November 2. Also, KSCA stated that its state T20 League, the Maharaja Trophy, will be played behind closed doors, starting from August 11. Stadium requirements The report also outlined several requirements that the Chinnaswammy Stadium, among other older venues in the country (built in 1974), does not have a provision for, like "purpose-built queuing and circulation areas separated from public roads, sufficient entry and exit gates to manage mass ingress and egress, integrated access to public transport and nearby tourist hubs, comprehensive emergency evacuation plans in line with global safety norms and adequate parking and drop-off facilities to accommodate large volumes of attendees." The panel also recommended action against the chief of KSCA, Raghuram Bhat, ex-secretary A Shankar, ex-treasurer ES Jairam, with the latter two resigning citing "moral responsibility" after the incident, RCB vice-president Rajesh Menon, DNA Entertainment Networks MD T Venkat Vardhan and VP Sunil Mathur. It also held police officers B Dayananda, Vikash Kumar, Shekhar HT, C Balakrishna and AK Girish, all removed by the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah following the incident, as responsible for being part of the arrangement. The Karnataka government, which also celebrated the title win with players in a felicitation event on the steps of Vidhana Soudha, is expected to decide on recommendations during the next cabinet meeting, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
