IPL 2025: Rajasthan Royals in limbo with Samson's return still uncertain

Gulf News25-04-2025

Dubai: Rajasthan Royals' season continues to unravel, and the absence of Sanju Samson remains a major stumbling block. The skipper, nursing a side strain, has now missed back-to-back games, and with no clear timeline for his return, the Royals appear rudderless during the most critical stage of their campaign.
The 2008 champions slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat — and seventh overall — after falling short by 11 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Thursday in the Indian Premier League Season 18.
Blistering start, same old finish
Rajasthan, chasing 206, were off to a flyer. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Nitish Rana smashed 110 runs in the first nine overs, cashing in as the dew neutralised a tricky pitch. But the familiar middle-overs stutter returned once stand-in skipper Riyan Parag was dismissed, allowing Bengaluru back into the contest.
'I thought at the halfway mark we were in the driving seat,' Parag said. 'But we have ourselves to blame… we didn't show enough intent against the spinners and didn't execute well.'
Samson update — or lack of one
While the defeats continue to pile up, what's equally worrying for Rajasthan is the uncertainty around their captain's fitness.
'Sanju picked up a bit of a side issue during the game against Delhi (Capitals),' said Rahul Dravid at the pre-match press conference. 'He wasn't fit for the last game or this one, and the medical team didn't clear him to play.'
Dravid said the Royals took a cautious approach, opting to keep Samson off the road and under treatment.
'We didn't want him travelling and making two more flights. We've kept the physio back with him to try and get him back as quickly as possible,' he said.
However, when pressed for a return date, Dravid offered no clarity. 'I have no timeline to give as to when exactly he will be fit… we're trying our best.'
In the post-match chat, Sandeep Sharma didn't hold back about the impact of not having Samson around.
'His experience and leadership are things we can't replace. Sanju's such a smart player, and us missing him has impacted how we play. He couldn't even start the season with us because of injury, and now, just when he was back for a few games, he's hurt again. All of this adds up and makes it tough for us,' Sandeep said.
Hazlewood turns the tide
Rajasthan's defeat wasn't for lack of chances. After restricting Bengaluru to 205 for five, they needed only 18 runs from the final two overs. But Josh Hazlewood produced a game-changing penultimate over, conceding just one run and grabbing two wickets. He finished with 4 for 33 as Rajasthan ended on 194 for nine — another winnable chase gone wrong.
With just a handful of games left, Samson's prolonged absence — compounded by a finger injury earlier in the tournament — couldn't have come at a worse time. The Royals' play-off hopes are still alive, but only just. And without their captain, the path ahead looks increasingly unclear.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru offer cash help after deadly cricket stampede

Royal Challengers Bengaluru said Thursday they stood "united" with fans as the Indian Premier League champions announced financial aid to families of those crushed to death during their title celebrations. Hundreds of thousands had packed the streets in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru on Wednesday to welcome home their hero Virat Kohli and his RCB team-mates after they beat Punjab Kings in a thrilling IPL final. But the euphoria of the vast crowds ended in disaster when 11 fans died in a stampede near the city's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the players were parading the trophy. Fans wave flags as thousands gather outside the Vidhana Soudha to celebrate with Royal Challengers Bengaluru players winning the IPL. AFP Most of the dead were young fans aged between 14 and 29 who had gone out just to catch a glimpse of their heroes. Dozens of abandoned shoes and flip-flops littered the site in the aftermath. RCB offered financial aid of $11,655 to each family of those killed. Indian media have widely reported the team earned $2.3 million in prize money alone for taking the title on Wednesday. "Our fans will always remain at the heart of everything that we do," RCB said. "We remain united in grief." Fans look at a digital board screening live Virat Kohli during celebrations at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. AFP Kohli, who top-scored in the final, said he was "at a loss for words" after celebrations of a dream IPL crown turned to tragedy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident "absolutely heartrending." 'Stamped on me' Police used mild force to disperse people outside the stadium, an eyewitness told AFP, but the crowd was "extremely difficult" to control. Lakshminarayan, who lost his 14-year-old granddaughter in the crush, said his family carried the child in a motor rickshaw to hospital. He said celebrations should have been delayed to prepare for the widely expected mass crowds. Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah (Centre L) visits a victim of the stampede. AFP "There was no need to conduct celebrations the very next day, they should have postponed it to a week and organised it a better way," he said. "You should take all precautionary measures, they should have police protection and follow the queue system." One of the people injured described to AFP how a "huge crowd" had crushed her. "They stamped on me," said the woman, who did not give her name, from a wheelchair. "I was not able to breathe. I fell unconscious." 'Died in an RCB shirt' Street food vendor Manoj Kumar mourned the death of his 18-year-old son. "I wanted him to go to college," Kumar told the Indian Express newspaper. "I brought him up with a lot of care. Now he is gone." Security personnel constrain fans outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday. AFP A grieving mother outside a city mortuary said her 22-year-old engineering student son had also died. "He was crazy about RCB," she was quoted as saying by the Indian Express. "He died in an RCB shirt. They danced when RCB won and now he is gone. Can RCB give him back to us?" Authorities had already called off RCB's proposed open-top bus victory parade through the streets after anticipating vast crowds. But organisers pressed ahead with the welcome ceremony and celebrations inside the stadium. RCB's social media account posted a video of cheering crowds lining the streets as the players waved back from their team bus on their way to the stadium. The team said they cut short the celebrations "immediately upon being made aware of the situation." Karnataka state chief minister Siddaramaiah said that the stadium had a capacity of "only 35,000 people, but 200,000-300,000 people came." Agence France-Presse

India arrests four people for cricket fans stampede

Police in India's tech capital of Bengaluru have arrested four people, including an official of a top cricket franchise, in connection with a stampede during a trophy celebration that killed 11 people and injured 47, media reported. Four people, three from an event management company and one official from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricket team, whose victory in the Indian Premier League this week led to fan frenzy, were arrested early on Friday morning, media said. Spokespersons for the team did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. On Wednesday, Bengaluru were celebrating their win the previous day over Punjab Kings in the final of the IPL's 18th edition, the world's richest T20 cricket league. The team had given away free passes for the celebration at a stadium in the city but said that numbers would be limited. Thousands of people gathered outside the stadium, and fans without passes tried push through the gates, leading to a stampede. The franchise said later the incident was "unfortunate" and pledged one million Indian rupees to each family of the 11 fans who died on Wednesday. India's head cricket coach Gautam Gambhir said on Thursday he did not support such roadshows and celebrations. "Celebration is important. But more important than that is the life of any person. So, if we are not prepared or if we can't handle the crowd in that way, then we might as well not have these roadshows," Gambhir told reporters.

Kohli ‘lost for words' after Royal Challengers Bengaluru victory celebration turns tragic

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have pledged one million Indian rupees ($11,654) to each family of the 11 fans who died in a crowd surge outside the team's home stadium on Wednesday during celebrations following their maiden IPL title. Virat Kohli said he was lost for words after celebrations of a dream IPL title turned to tragedy. Hundreds of thousands had packed the streets Wednesday to welcome home their hero Kohli and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) after they had beaten Punjab Kings a day earlier in a thrilling Indian Premier League final. Chinnaswamy cricket stadium, where the players were parading the trophy for fans. Kohli, who top scored in the final, said earlier it had been 'as much for the fans' after the 36-year-old finally celebrated winning the IPL at his 18th attempt. Later, Kohli wrote on social media: 'At a loss for words. 'Absolutely gutted,' he added, alongside a statement from the RCB team saying they were 'deeply anguished' at what had unfolded. One of the people injured described to AFP how a 'huge crowd' had crushed her. 'They stamped on me,' said the woman, who did not give her name, from a wheelchair. 'I was not able to breathe.
